    I love Bob! One of your best episodes of all time. And RIP Paul Sherwen. I can't recall ever a time of listening to races without his voice.

      Aw. This is the first I heard of his death. Crushed. He'll be very much missed. What a gentle person he was. A great man.

      @@Gkuljian , He died on Dec 2nd from Heart Failure. He was only 62 and seemed to be in good health. I am still having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that he is gone . He had a very soothing voice and a calm demeanor.

      My wife and I only recently started following Tour coverage (maybe five years max), but I cannot imagine hearing Paul's gentle voice in 2019's TDF. I am crushed. I tuned-in yearly to hear Bobke's commentary... but knowing that Paul's steady voice won't be there to guide me through the stage happenings is just so strange and foreign. Will take a while to process. :(

    • @ghowell13
      @ghowell13 5 лет назад

      The Tour just wasn't the same this year without him, that's for sure. I watched this after obviously, and I also watched another 2 part interview with Bob before this. You can tell he truly misses his friend. We all do. Each time he talks about Climber, I tear up. Its a great loss to us all...

  • @bpjbp
    @bpjbp 5 лет назад +75

    I'm usually not star strikestruck, but there is one time that caught me completely off guard. Its at a stage end at the Tour of CA. I saw many famous cyclists, which was great, but it was all very relaxed. Just like meeting pretty much anyone else.
    I was walking around the finish line when pretty much everyone had cleared, and who should step out but Paul Sherwen. I froze! I stood there for a few moments without doing anything. I have never had that happen. Paul looked at me, looked away briefly, then looked back, walked up and greeted me. He was so kind and down to earth. A true gentleman.
    I teared up when Lance and Bob were reminiscing about him. I can hardly say that I knew him, but he touched me. Many years of listening to his commentary.
    I don't know what watching the TDF will be like without him. It definitely won't be the same.
    RIP Paul.

    This was the best of Lance Armstrong ever!!!!! I sat at a table for 20 min with Lance the last day of La Ruta in Costa Rica, and I thought that was one of my best moments in life to sit with Lance (Román and Mike Kloser) for 20 min....and talk to those all time heroes of mine. But today, this podcast, was supreme, I even have old Cycling magazines with Bob Roll on it!!!! I will think of Paul, every day I ride my bike and go over those 3 overpasses to get home. Thanks for all Paul, thank you Rob, and you Lance, you just keep growing. Amen.

    I have said it before and will say it again... Lance you are the man, and still my hero . Thank you for doing these interviews and showing your love and. Passion for cycling. Great great great interview. The next great interview will be Phil himself. It would be very interesting to hear what he felt you brought to cycling and how it’s lost it’s luster with Team Sky just setting the pace and which team member they want to win the tour. The French cannot seem to produce a true challenger, and the Germans don’t care, and the Spaniards just don’t seem to have the legs for climbing. The Americans cannot stay out of harms way, to move their teams to the next level, so to me the TDF has lost its luster. Phil please come on the show and talk about the above. Thanks again Lance

    This interview brought back many memories. Bob, Lance, Paul, and Phil ( may he rest in peace) were for many of us the catalyst that got us to not only watch the TDF but to also squeeze our "out of shape bodies" into spandex and help us get back on the bike. I like many others got used to Paul and Phil in my house during those magnificent three weeks in July every year for the last 15 years. thank you Paul and Phil. Great interview Lance, always love the free flowing conversations that this podcast always encourages. Godspeed Paul.

    Bob Roll is a man of many pursuits: former Tour de France racer and mountain bike competitor; training partner of Lance Armstrong; columnist in VeloNews; television commentator, interviewer. He is best know for his colorful commentary around the observations made by a couple of Brits - Phil Liggett and RIP Paul Sherwen - all while painting a decidedly American view of cycling. I always look forward to the start of the Tour to hear his gonzo voice of professional cycling. The three paired so well together. It is all I've known the TDF wont be the same. It was very touching to hear Bob speak about the loss of his longtime friend Paul. Makes you truly value a good friendship.

    This is one of your best shows. Thank you Lance and Bob for this heartfelt segment about Paul and your experiences with him. I relate so much to Lance's words about Paul and Phil in my home every July for years, every TDF. They were and still are THE voices of The Tour. I'm so happy that Bob is with Phil now, especially after seeing this episode. Paul was truly great in so many ways; Bob and Phil continue together in memory of our friend. Rest in peace, Paul.♥️🙏

I am sixty-seven, and still riding my (white) 2001 trek 5200 , and trust me when I say that shows like this keep me cranking. Love you both, and Lance you are still the second greatest cyclist ever. I just popped the top of a Belgian beer to toast the greatest. I will never look at an over pass the same as I did before this show, lol. When I first heard that Paul passed, I had to google it. Best podcast yet; great work Lance. Bob is as genuine and entertaining as they come and I think he may be the one to fill Paul's big shoes. Loved Paul's stories and history lessons, even though his excessive use of the word "actually" drove me bonkers at times (I have word allergies). Still, his is a huge loss for all of racing and I will truly miss him. Finally, like Lance inferred, it would be helpful to know what exactly took down an ex-athlete who appeared to be in pretty good shape, but sadly we may never.

    Watching a race with Phil and Paul doing commentary gave the event huge credibility and value. The void created by Paul's departure will be insurmountable. Thank you for your insights and personal stories about this great man. He will absolutely be missed.

    Great show Lance. You and Bobke are magical together. I promise I will think about Paul Sherwin every time I go over an overpass or speed bump.

    I love this! After the Oprah interview, I only cared about 2 friends leaving Lance - Bob and Matthew. Neither abandoned him! Awesome!

    My dad and I Met bob at a bike event in Elk Grove Illinois a few years back. Was amazing to us as fans. Shot the shit with us at his trailer, signed jerseys, gave us a good 15 minutes. Top notch dude!

    I loved Paul. This episode had me in tears. Thank you for the stories. Always great to listen to. A wonderful friend of mine met Paul in London at the 2007 TDF and said exactly what you stated...he was completely down to earth.

    I was on my way to see the start of the 2nd stage of the 1996 Tour DuPont in Fredericksburg, VA. As a young cycling fan, it wasn't every day that you would get to see some of your heroes in your own region of the US. I pulled into a gas station right before the little historic neighbourhood where the start of the stage was being held. By pure serendipity, the Motorola team was in the same gas station. I walked into the little convenience store to grab a drink and a snack, and there was Paul Sherwan at the check-out counter. As a fan who would watch World Cycling VHS tapes while riding the trainer every day in the early '90s, I looked over at him, kind of shocked and a little star-struck, "Hey, you're Paul Sherwan. I really dig what you and Phil do on TV. You guys are great." Paul just smiled and said, "Yes, and hopefully you'll be seeing more of us." Just cool and gracious.
    The dynamic of Phil and Paul together was extremely special in broadcasting. Watching a cycling race will never be the same again, and won't be nearly as entertaining.

    Thank you for sharing the back stories that none of us know about. Paul has been the soundtrack to our summers. Can't wait to see how NBC handles this. Either way, Paul will continue to be missed. Thanks again!!
