  • Speaking at a forum on Saturday, former trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz stressed that children should not be exposed to obsolete teaching methods, particularly methods that do not allow them to be immersed in English.
She said speaking English doesn't not make her any less Malay.

If I’m not mistaken, he decided that education will be still in Malay, not that it’s wrong or not valid but it needs to be pointed out that English is a universal language. My parents studied in English, they have excellent command of Malay and English; better than me dare I say. I hate to be flaming or being harsh but someone needed to say this and she did. It’s being very honest, logical, practical and the betterment of the country and progress for the nation.

I am the first batch of the PPSMI (2003-2007) where Maths and Science subjects were taught in English. Coming from a humble family background, I didn’t have anyone to refer to except my teachers at school. My parents are not educated, what more to say if they could help me with homeworks, assignments etc. But it did not hinder me to get an A for both English and Bahasa Malaysia, Science subjects too off course. But after my year, the system was changed back to BM if I’m not mistaken. And Tan Sri’s worst nightmare kinda is back hunting us. The young interns (but not ALL) that I work with (I had a couple of them from the past experience) couldn’t even produce a simple memo/proposal without me being the examiner and checked the grammar + sentence structure. Ayat tunggang langgang, simple grammar pun buat org tepuk dahi kalau baca. Of course, I am not the native speaker, and I do make mistakes sometimes. But glaring mistakes on email memo such as “Sirs” and “Madams” produced by these young interns really made my fingertips itchy 😂

Everything now is Bahasa melayu, bahasa melayu and Islam, islam islam only in school. It it so sad because in the Quran it says seek all kinds of knowledge that is beneficial anywhere in the world to be successful in the dunia and in the akhirat.
There was this PAS MP, Tuan Ibrahim, I think, who questioned Tun M, why the police force had started having internal briefings and intra department reports done in English?? He claimed as a Royal Agency of the Government, by usisng English, PDRM is going against government policy and against the constitution!
As Tan Sri Rafidah pointed out, Bahasa Melayu is not there yet and English is still the universal language. But the standard of English in this country has fallen to the lowest of low for students from Standard One to even Professors with pHDs! This is a fact no one can hide or deny. Is this shocking when there are lawmakers like the example above who insists everything is done in Bahasa Melayu?

I was lucky because my batch at the time had the privilege to learn the 2 subjects in English. I think it was about 5 years later, it was changed to Malay because they said students couldn’t cope. But that’s not entirely true cz everything was in dwibahasa. The older generation in Sabah was English educated. I just think the government should give more time. Had it not been retracted, I think by now, students would have been able to be more confident using the language.

the problem right now in Malaysia, is that our young generation been raise up without knowing the mother language. Imagine what will happen in the next 100 years, Bahasa Melayu will be remove? or people in the next generation would not even know that " What is Bahasa Melayu?". However Tan Sri, you have a point that "speak english" does not mean you are less Malay. Im honestly proud of our multiculture society. But, im disagree with your point why we should not make our language sovereign. Back in 15th century during Malacca golden time, our language, "Bahasa Melayu" was being recognized as "Lingua Franca" International language to people who wan to start their business in Malacca. So, why we should be ashamed of our own language?. Lastly you mentioned about Japan and other country that dont speak english as their first or second language. Do you know that these country are actually depend on the translator? i dont see any problem with that, in fact, many foreigner come to the country just to learn the language. Why can't we expect the same thing to happen in Malaysia?

Overall I think Malays speaks and write English at okay level if not well, there are mistakes here and there, of course. Throughout my services with the private sector, government, on my own and while being a student, English was the 2nd compulsory or main medium depending on who the recipient is. All documents, board papers and presentations were in English. I don’t see any issues here, I still remember vetting papers of my organizations and colleagues for content richness and appropriateness, all is okay, any mistakes would be corrected and guided. Never have myself and the organizations belittle or ridicule imperfection of English or Bahasa Malaysia of anybody, they learn fast and will not shy away from English or Bahasa Malaysia if not ridiculed, especially when not being ridiculed in public. It is all a matter of attitude, not only the attitude of people that tries hard to master English but the attitude of the so called proficient English speaking people. Instead of ridiculing those less proficient, care for each other development by being positive. If people were to spell “warehouse” as “wherehouse”, correct the person and say it is okay to make mistakes, rather than making it an evergreen joke of the organizations, meetings for years and years and worse, through social media. Pity the person who wrote “wherehouse” many many moons ago, he or she is still remembered or set as an example. Make learning lifelong as in “Lifelong Learning” and avoid “Lifelong Belittlement”. “Respect and Encouragement” are the keywords in developing language skills.

Sometimes just to end an argument over rhetorics and time wasters, I would just end it with, “That is why person A is somewhere “here” and person B is somewhere “there”.
    Salam damai selalu 🙏🙏

We must tackle the root cause of this "English kills Malay" perception. The English-medium schools of yore cultivated an 'urbanite' culture so distinct from the Malay masses that all sorts of language shaming, misgivings and conflicts would occur between both groups. Compare this to mainland European countries where English is foreign to everyone so no one becomes so busybody about each other's English proficiency the same way we are. To be proficient in English is one thing but to operate or receive instruction in English is another. Failure to recognise this is one of the contributing factors to the collapse of PPSMI in Malaysia and also the failings of English-medium instruction in various Commonwealth countries.
