“I was never taking lessons… …The more I sang the better I got,” - James Hetfield. Those are some powerful words coming from the vocalist of the highest selling heavy metal band of all time. That truly speaks volumes about the importance of commitment, perseverance, and hard work. Dude admitted that he couldn’t even sing, but he became the greatest frontman of all time because he just kept singing and eventually got good at it.

Anyone who's listened to every album knows the different stages of maturation that James's voice has went through. To me they all sound good. For most aggression, I'd say AJFA was the peak, and the Black Album was the start of rasp+singing, but also when he was battling the blowing his voice out more often, hence the lower "singing" with the Loads. I will say though that in the last couple years, James has found away with his older "mature" voice to find some wider range again and decent control of his voice with a little more rasp back in it. Deeper, but dynamic. Not sure what his new secret sauce is but his voice on the live performances has seemed pretty consistent lately.

The loads were the voice crack era. He could barely make it through a single song without cracking back then. Most people were just good sports cause they knew he'd been screaming for over 10 years without technique by that point. He is a bit better now but he still goes full yodel at times to compensate for his irreparably damaged vocal chords.
His screams were insane on KEA and he was viscous on AJFA. But his singing on fade to black or sanitarium showed he had a good clean voice back then too. Would have been nice if he could have maintained that

The early Metallica demos had James attempting some vocal gymnastics on quite a few songs. By the time they recorded Kill Em All he dropped the high end completely and just went for a more punk aesthetic which was more Lemmy-esque delivery wise (and less pretentious). Which fit the music better and made them more uncategorizable in a sense. Hard alcohol did the rest.

James' voice became lower as time went on. I think Master of Puppets is very noticeable as far as maturity. I don't know if was the drinking he did or the constant road tours but it's very noticeable and his voice just kept getting lower with And Justice For All, The Black Album and the Load Albums and everything past that. Even Steven Tyler's voice deepened when singing " Dream On" on the regular versus the album where it's higher in pitch. There's really no way to stop it unless you have started with voice lessons , voice training with constant care and drinking lots of lemon tea and rest. I think James has been lucky to not lose his voice without any care and voice training. There are lots of singers who have lost their voice permanently because they didn't take care of themselves.

Just think of it: those guys have been into their music, shows and so on all their lives, since adolescence! If they wanted to start earlier, they should have started it when still in diapers.

unpopular opinion: his voice before 1985 was " meh" at best

I think his vocals were too drowned in reverb before MoP but I still really enjoy his performances.

Is that really an unpopular opinion? I think most would agree that what you're hearing on AJFA/Black Album is the "real" Hetfield. On the early records he sounds laughable. In my own little world, I always thought that was the consensus.

Never mind the voice, what about the evolution of his appearance?
Went from cute boy to studly man to absolute daddy.

James mentioned the poster of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and how he wanted to be them. I think he’s a better singer than Steven Tyler and a better guitar player than Joe Perry.

Its funny how a guy like James didn’t take lessons but just do it and with hard work becomes successful, and others spend years on music college ect and spend thousands of dollars and don’t achieve a career..
I should have thought different when I first started out .. waist of money !
