- LOL. I thought I had got lucky. Saw this 6 8930 tube 2-piece linear amplifier listed on ebay in the Ham Linear Amplifier category. At the time, I didn't know who made it, but after getting it and doing some research, it's likely a Golden Falcon 3000 box. However, though it was in the right category, it's title said 'CB Linear Amplifier'. As I was interested in the amplifier, I contacted the seller and told them that ebay was going to squash any amp listed as a CB amp and that I would make an offer on it before they did. The seller contacted me and basically said they didn't know what I was talking about. LOL, that happens to me a lot, right? So, I left it alone after that but days later, the seller contacted me and said, Yep, you were right. LOL that happens to me a lot too. So, the seller then said they relisted it as an Amateur Radio Linear Amplifier and had a buy-it-now if I was still interested. Well, I went and looked and the 'buy it now' was now higher than my offer, but I saw a lot of potential in this 6 tuber with the extra tube included so I bought it. BTW, 8930's are 4cx250R's with a bigger fin on them. They are rated for 350 watts plate dissipation each. Going by my watt calculation of 2x plate dissipation per tube for peak watts, this out to be able to put out 4200 peak watts if it worked LOL.
The seller shipped it quick enough, but of course very little packing. Stuff was rattling in the RF deck too. I unboxed the extra tube first. That's when I knew I was in big trouble. NG all around it. For those who don't know, NG means NO GOOD. Also, the other iteration of that is NFG and you can figure out what the F means. Next, to the RF deck. With the low packing, it took some hits but its not too bad. However, the grand opening sunk my heart. To be honest, the seller listed this 'As/Is' but IMHO I would say its salvage. Oh well, win some and lose some or You pay your money and you take your chances. Well, I paid my money and lost on this one.
Update, not a total loss. A person with less projects and more time than me bought this and its his winter project. Good Luck. For me, it ended up being a break even. Goodbye Golden Falcon.
Wow! Just wow! I hope that you didn’t get hurt too bad.
Damn good story with a sad ending!
It's a Golden Falcon. Last time I rehabbed one of those was around 2006 or so. A big job, including design booboos you'll need to rework. Even the connector from the external transformer to the RF deck will have to be upgraded if it's original. Best of luck. Will be a big job, just getting six 8930 tubes that match. The more tubes you tie together the better they need to balance. 73,Chri
