"Sometimes I was embarrassed in public by how she pronounced 'library' 'libary'" I love this line. It so perfectly captures how illogical we become in love. This is such a gorgeous movie, down to the last detail.
the ending can be described as the definition of love. You know that at some point you will hurt each other and won't destroy each other. But in the end, you accept because the idea of not living your life with that person means more than pain at the end. Love is wild. Love is unrelenting. Love is beautiful. Love is painful. Love is going completely insane. But that's okay. Love yours truly.
@@rogerriveroll6324 oh so having ADHD or a disability means that you are insane now is that it? Give him a break, there is a reason for everyone to behave like that. He is on medication after all.
“I can’t see anything I don’t like about you.” “But you will.” “Okay.” The realization both people have to come to for a relationship to have any chance. You’re not perfect and neither are they.
That's a very strong ending... They came together to realize that they will go deep on that loop, couple loathing, hateful things, sick love... But instead of saying goodbye knowing this; they wanna try it out, they wanna have that memories again. I saw this movie when a kiddo, didn't really knew what it meant, but now... Hell, it became one of my favorite movies.
In recording lastly it said that he wasted so much time only to know she was just a stranger to him. thats when he realised he was okay with that too, and all the negatives. he just wanted her to be with him. Thats it.
I watched it for the first time when I was about 13 and I loved it, even though I didn't really understand many things at the time (well, I did but differently), especially considering that I haven't had any relationship back then, and not until I was 21. I rewatched it quite a lot through the years and can still find some details I didn't pay attention too before. Last time I rewatched the movie about 2 weeks ago, 7 months after my 2nd serious* relationship ended and it hit differently again, and it hit way harder since I was really happy being together and so was she, well, according to her, but she was never caught lying. We're still good friends (and when I say friend, I mean it, I don't call random strangers or close aquaintances friends, moreover, you're not always friends with a partner, so the cliche "let's stay friends" doesn't mean anything if 1) you weren't friends in the first place; 2) the partner doesn't mean it and just keeps you hanging on for whatever reason), I never hypothetically thought if I wanter her erased from my memory, I appreciate the emotions I had, I appreciate the memories I have, good and bad. On the contrary, I often wished I could erase memories of my 1st GF before, then I realized that bad experience is still an experience and, even it it's unpleasant to remember, it makes me a better man and prevents me from repeating it. Also, these 2 examples determine whether I'd go to the hallway to try and stop this girl that I'd known, as it turned out, from leaving. I guess you may assume this is one of my favorite movies as well. *I usually retain myself from using a phrase "serious relationship" because it's always serious to me by definition and I won't take it any other way. We may just be lovers, fuck buddies or whatever else but if we're in a relationship, it IS serious.
That final “okay!” and the following laughter is so amazing. As in really accepting each other’s flaws and recognizing the humanity of the other subject. Truly moving and in a real way.
I know it's a work of fiction, but damn was this a great film... It's the ultimate test of any REAL relationship... After it all falls to pieces... After everything is finally laid bare... It's the wake-up call that'll either put you together for good, or it's the curtain call... I'm a hopeless romantic... I'd say give it a shot again... There's something calming about having been thru it before... If both ppl are serious about it....I wonder if ppl even want that kinda thing any longer? To want something that transcends even memory or experience... For it to just be the way it's supposed to be in in this intangible way... But because it's not instantly gratifying and takes work, because the results won't appear right away... Would it seem REAL to ppl these days and would they even want it?
The best thing about my life now is that I am with the love of my life.. we fight sometimes.. but we always come back to that hallway at the end.. I take none of it for granted.

@@muhammadfurqan4616 okay. Especially in this film, we are all entitled to our own opinion, but I strongly object to the idea that the movie shows that the love you still feel should show in your staying together.
My personal take on this film was that they were both really dumb by agreeing to get back together. They made eachother laugh and shallow stuff like that, but in the end they weren't compatible. Why not just look for someone who actually is?
@@eurekamreum5458 I wouldn't think they're not compatible as you said, simply because if they are, how could they just end up falling in love again that naturally? Ofc it's entirely up to you to see it like that, but I do think you're missing out the point this movie/this particular scene wanted to tell us. The deletion process did a great job, it completely wiped Joel/Clem out of each other's memory, but look, obviously it can not erase/change how they feel about each other, that's why they both ended up at Montauk, that's why they got hooked up to each other and falling in love, they are simply just drawn toward to each other from 2 strangers, all over again. Just like how it was with Mary toward Howard. So yeah at the end, despite the fact that they "foresight" how it would be if they decide to stay with each other, they still choose to do so. Sometime love does have its own miracle and beauty, you just go and take the plunge, not because you aren't afraid of how it would turn out, it's just because you treasure these feelings, these happiness more than anything else, that you would give it another chance no matter how many time it fail.
Such an underrated film. It reveals the complexity of truly loving another person and the need to transcend viewing the other as a need gratifying object.
I worked at California Video when this movie came out. I got to see it two days early. This is still one of my favorite movies. Holds up so well. Love Joel and Clem.
alot of details in this movie , like Joel when he first met Clemintine he ran away because he thought she was crazy but Clemintine changed him without realizing it like now after the proecdure he instantly run in the hallway despite the messed up history they both share to urge her to stay with him and she laughed because of that because deep down as well that's the only thing she ever wanted from him, to be with her despite all the flaws in her character .
Love hurts hurts more when separation happens but taking that same path to love again for me is a path that might be worth traveling again especially if there's a chance to change
the ending is powerful throughout the movie we stages of their love and because we are human we have flaws but if we can't communicate it, it causes fight and leads to breaks up. this led to them erasing their memories of eachother and creating a world in their minds that allowed to fix this errors and grow but they would continue the loop and are willling to pay the price with it because love isnt just happiness but painful its can change us into better people or bad people. honestly i love this movie its one of my all times that i love to rewatch
I just wanna say here that I feel for Clem and that I'm sad for her. When she says "That's what happens with me".... She's not the problem. She feels trapped by him, because it's a toxic relationship, not because she's "a fucked up girl" He's gaslighting her. While we hear his true thoughts about her - he thinks she's pathetic for dying her hair, that she sleeps with people for attention etc - he's blatently denying it. WE ALL KNOW THAT HE WOULD SAY THAT, BECAUSE HE LITERALLY IS and he still says he wouldn't- In the end of their relationship she's certain that getting away from him and erasing him is the best choice. Not because she's "impulsive" but because she doesn't feel like herself or happy around him (a very clear consequence of toxic relationships) and she's tired of his manipulation ie "puppy eyes". His tapes on the other hand only speak of HIS frustration with HER. While she looks for self realization he's angry that she doesn't live up to his expectations, even though she has been very clear from the start that she's "not a concept" For anyone saying you think the ending is about "true love" because when you love someone you'll eventually hurt or destroy each other I recommend reading "Why does he do that" by Lundy Bancroft, because healthy relationships don't do that to you. When you are in a situation like Clem and your gut tells you it's so broken that you have to erase him from your life, you gotta trust your gut. If leaving him brings you ANY sense of relief? Trust that feeling and leave him. You deserve better.
Oh honey, I'm sorry someone hurt you, but It's more likely Clem is the more crass and jerk exhibiting borderline personality disorder more than ptsd. Also, take the title itself, just cleaning up the away a few spots and happiness is forever yours.
