Very good info and excellent overnight trip idea!
Here are ome pro tips if you want to take it to the next level. This is what an experienced kayaker would bring on this trip:
    1. Vhf radio- to hail coast guard if you or another boater is in trouble.
    2. Wet or dry suit- to maintain your body temp in the event you end up in the water.
    3. A good well fitting life vest.
    4. Bright colored clothing and flags on the boat so other boaters don't run over you and so your rescuers can spot you more easily.
A dry bag- to keep your gear dry.
Whistle- to call for help. When you yell/scream, it's not as loud as you think out on the water.
Hat and long sleeves/pants- for sun protection and comfort.
A little more water than you think you will actually need.
Now, I wouldn't expect a beginner to purchase all this equipment, you should sooner rather than later if you enjoy your first paddle and want to progress. The idea here is to think safety first and to know what tools are out there to help increase your safety whole on the water.
    And some planning pro tips:
As you mentioned, know what the wind speed is and when high and low tides occur during your paddle. Tomales is known not just for being pristine but always a hazardous place to paddle when the winds come up. Time the currents to give you a "push" and when you first notice a stiff breeze (usually right after noon, get off the water asap or paddle to land and hug the shoreline until you get back.
Hope this info is helpful for someone.
    Anyhoot, enjoy your content!
