Hey Emma! A couples weeks back I was applying to a bunch of big jobs and was getting over the top nervous/terrified for the interviews. The night before the interview for the job I wanted most I watched one of your videos where you were talking about affirmations and you mentioned the phrase "do it afraid". This struck a major chord with me and helped me make it through the process - and yesterday I received not one but TWO job offers!!!! Thank you for the boost of courage I needed! 😊

As a Brazillian, I'd like to recommend some other classics that I think you'd enjoy as well as the books of Machado de Assis (and would like to see you talking about):
"The Sad Ending of Policarpo Quaresma", by Lima Barreto: published for the first time in 1911, this one will give you a whole panoramic view of the political situation by the ending of the 19th century, along with racial critics (since slavery was abolished only in 1888) and strong themes like the institution of marriage - and its importance for Brazillian woman at that time - and mental illness. Just to give you a glance at the history: Policarpo Quaresma is a civil servant and known as the most patriotic "person" that our country has ever had. He thinks that Brazil is the best country: has the best ground for growing plants, the most beautiful trees and animals, the most valuable poets and writers, prettier music, and even the better language. Not Portuguese, of course, because, in his words, it isn't truly ours: Portugal lent us; but the majestic Tupi-guarani, the language spoken by the native Indians who lived here before the colonization. So, one day, he gives the suggestion that Brazil's official language should be changed to its origins - and it doesn't go so well for him (there is a Penguin edition for this book).
"Captains of the Sands", by Jorge Amado: Jorge Amado is one of the most important modern writers for us, and, in my opinion, this book is THE saddest book of Brazillian literature. Here you'll follow orphan and homeless boys ages 15 to 6 who live together on the streets of Bahia (it may sound a little like "Lord of the Flies") in the 30s. They survive as they can: stealing, gambling, and sometimes with a help of a priest, who is the only person in that society who sees them as children who need help and love and protection, just as any other kid. But this isn't exactly the sad part, after all, they see themselves as free boys who can do whatever they want. And that's not even half of the story. I highly recommend this one (there's also a Penguin edition for it).
I really really hope to see more Brazilian books here, it's such a pleasure for us!!! Love your channel!

Emma, I adore you and your videos so so much. When I grow older, I want to have the same perspective towards books and literature. I would love to read the books you recommend the most although if I'm gonna be honest, most of those books are too hard for my little brain to comprehend. The scope of my knowledge and my ability to understand these texts is none to close to yours but nevertheless, I still enjoy the videos you make and just the way you talk about books so honestly and raw makes me want to read more and learn more. Maybe I'll read the books you love right now that I am fifteen and young and really try to grasp and appreciate the tales they bear, write a review or a letter about it on the last page for when I read it again, perhaps ten years from now, my twenty-five year old possibly still confused self might learn something from it. I guess I'll see. Please carry on with doing what you love and keep on sharing it with us!

hi! just a little advice from someone who loves indoor plants too but you should consider adding some perlite to the soil because it will rot/kill the roots since itll be wet for longer especially for the haworthia : )
the perlite helps to make the soil a bit airy which helps oxygen to pass through towards the roots and helps to prevent root rot

Anita's book is very good, it's the first novel with a title in an Australian Indigenous language. She's highly respected in Australia. Heiss is Professor of Communications at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, University of Queensland.
The flooded town she writes about, Gundagai, is still there but built higher on the hill. We used to travel through there on the way to visit family south to us. The road has been built up, but I remember times when we had to delay our trip due to the Gundagai bridge being flooded. There's a monument in the town paying tribute to the Indigenous men who saved many of the town people during the flood in the novel.

I read Tender is the flesh last year and loved it with my whole heart. It was my favorite read of 2020. I was amazed by how horryfying the future world Agustina Bazterrica created was to me, but at the same time, what truly unsettled me and made me love the book so much when I read it was how I believed everything I was reading despite how crazy and horrible it was. In my opinion, Tender is the flesh is an incredible book and I can't recommend it enough. I hope you read it soon!!

I haven’t read Maurice but I have been reading A Passage to India by E.M. Forster, and I’m not sure how to feel about it. I get what you’re saying about the detached style, the characters seem very stiff and I don’t really find them that interesting. Luckily the plot and setting (and themes) are interesting enough to keep me going but my first Forster has been a bit disappointing.
Although, maybe it’s just that I’m a bit fed up of reading after reading all day for my literature review.
Would be good to read others’ opinions on A Passage to India.

Please rate this book. It explains all the predicaments of the self in a way that you will accept. In this way, even the inconclusive speeches of philosophers, which contain confusion, will be easily understood.
Here is an excerpt from the book that defines concepts such as the self, intuition, and psychology:
By the way, I started primary school. I had learned to read and write before going to school. I still bring beans and sticks to school. For some reason I can't find suitable sticks... I take a matchstick instead of a piece of bush. A certain number is required. Mine are still missing though. Thanks God, they overlook my shortcomings because they find me intelligent. When I started school as an intelligent person; the school presented me with another reality of the society. I had assumed those who went to school were special personalities. School; seemed like it was not an institution that I would succeed and embrace. School; was as if it was the place where people who could get integrated with the school, would assume a privileged personality when they were being educated. Before school, my place in my own eyes and in the eyes of the society was uncertain. It was not clear whether I was respected, disgraced, at the bottom or at the top. Environmental factors that fed my self positively were very few. I was mostly feeding my self with my intuition that is in depths. School was the first external factor that determined my place in the society. Since it seemed that I was intelligent, my meaningful intuitions continued on a social basis as well. In the 2 years before school; I couldn't experience enough positive psychology because the strength and prideful side of my self was lacking. I can't live it now either. Again, I maintain my self with meaningful intuitions. I have as much meaning as the part of my innate intelligence that has not yet been transformed into psychology. That's why everything makes so much sense to me; including my uncles, including the few items I can see. There has been no increase in the number (or type) of items since I was 4 years old. There has been a slight increase in the number of new people I have met. It's like it didn't increase at all. That's why the volume of meaning that is in me continues at the same amount. Meaning could not turn into psychological pleasure; in short, it could not turn into normal psychology. If there was a direct increase in items and living things or if there was an increase in items and living things due to the expansion of my geographical environment; it would turn into psychology. The items and the living things remained almost constant, the meaning as well... As time passed, however, my psychology increased. Increasing psychology was not the normal psychology that should have increased with the increase in number of things and beings. It was the negative psychology caused by the consciousness and actions of my environment that were insufficient for me. Therefore; almost all of my newly formed psychology consisted of negative psychology. The reason for the existence of my normal volume psychology is that my innate intelligence meets the materials around me. Its potential is as big as my intelligence. You know, "the meaning" was as much as my intelligence... After all, there is a world we live in. The sensation of beings and my encounter with beings; would enable meaning to turn into psychology. We brought the meaning as much as our intelligence, from birth. We did not innately bring the psychology that will be formed for this world. There is a situation where the psychology does not seem to fit our originality. It fits. Because the environment; is one of the 5 parts of the self. Thus, we have said the wonderful connection that the volume of psychology will be as much as intelligence. The psychology we put on our backs later, thanks to the environment; sits in a shape in its original consistency. It is necessary for the intelligence to grasp as many various beings as it is able to grasp. Here; this necessity is the big part of what is called the self. This is what is called the soul, it is this necessity. Psychology is; the vibrations (spiritual movements) created by the relevant substances in the body for the necessity of this comprehension.
This book says new things that way. The name of the book is Sacrosanct Intelligence. Published by: Amazon kindle.

Please read Master and Margarita by Bulgakov this fall, I'm currently reading it and it's amazing. It's about the devil doing his crazy stuff, people going mad, love, writers and so much more. It is also about Russia ofcourse but I'm not very well informed about Russian history, I'm just anjoying the craziest fantastical story so far. I'm also stuck in "Before the coffee gets cold". I think the problem with this novel is in its adaptation, which came from a play. The editor should have done a better job getting rid off all those repetition.
