what makes simpsons work is while satire parody cynical counter culture a little risky for the time, they always seemed to respect their audience the story the characters and most of what they referenced like you could tell the references that were more than a 3 second joke were almost always done because the staff was fans of what they were homaging not making fun of it...they didn't parody 2001 a space odyssey cause they didn't like it for instance they clearly loved it and crammed it into a short episode just cause they could...they could make stuff funny by being clever not stupid cheap

The voice actor who died was the legendary Phil Hartman. SNL Alum and also the voice of other simpsons characters Troy Mclure and Lionel Hutz. He was gunned down by his own wife

24:19 In hindsight, the Elephant in the Room reminds me of Viced Rhino’s avatar, being a cross-armed pachyderm and all.
And for the record, the term “pachyderm” also refers to rhinos and hippos, as it was once thought that they were closely related to elephants (since they all have thick skin, hence “pachyderm”), but have since been found out otherwise. However, in pop culture, the term normally only refers to elephants, and it just kind of stuck.

5:12 I take it this episode was based on the creators’ childhoods, when video games weren’t a thing. I know this from experience, as I’m currently writing a story that seems to take place in a pre-streaming world, despite being set in the present day, because I’m drawing influence from my own childhood.

So... I don't recall if I've requested something before, but tying into this video I'd like to recommend "The Bizarre Modern Reality of the Simpsons" by Super Eyepatch Wolf. It's really interesting to see how fans interpret the series during it's current zombie Simpsons period.

I relate Robert so much. I tried to get my GED, and passed every test except math. I've never been the best at math, so I buckled down, studied hard, and took the test again. Same exact score. I was crushed. I didnt give up though, and eventually I passed it. I'm so glad to be done with it.

Hey SpongeBob is still pretty awesome, the 20 year anniversary episode was cool because some of the voice actors portrayed live action version of their characters close to the end of the episode.

The "I am so smart" episode is called "Homer Goes To College". It's one of my least favourite episodes, in spite of the joke. Maybe I'd like it more if I watched 80s college movies because that seems to be the joke, but I was born too late and I think you have to be an American college kid to get some of the jokes anyway. I was a Kiwi college kid.

4:40 Hey, at least she didn’t play the piano with pencils, in an attempt to be like that Asian cat from _The AristoCats_ .
No, really - I actually did that as a kid. Though, in my defence, I didn’t even know what Asians were at the time, so how was I meant to know that scene was making fun of them?

Yeah. Not gonna lie, I teared up a bit on that clip of Bart giving in to his anger and frustration of failing.
That's how powerful of an episode it is.

It's part of why Bart is my favorite because I can so relate to it.
No matter how hard we try, sometimes it's just never enough, and that can be seriously crippling emotionally and physically at times.

i disagree with the critic claiming bart gets an F is their best serious comedic drama mixed episode..one moment doesn't make an episode and most of it is only ok going down the typical he gets distracted so you know hes going to fail gimmick before it happens long before and it drags out and lets not forget the whole martin teaching him subplot which goes nowhere and how it focuses on just bart which isn't the show at its best....they have some great top 25 contenders which are serious that could of made the list but if I had to narrow it down to one it would be season 4's masterpiece many claim is the best episode ever till this day.......last exit to springfield while more jokey referential and with a clear villain in burns has huge stakes better faster comedy has more characters playing an active part in homer lisa and burns all at their best plus a real b plot with lisa that connects to the main plot not to mention a beautiful song as well as moral lesson and shots at labor unions when it was uncool to do that sort of stuff on t.v. and it has lisa needing to get braces and the family not being able to afford nice ones without their dental plan..it spoke to me more...its whacky sure but for once homer comes out on top by not doing much and that being the key and earning her daughter's heart showing her grandma's protest side in them both is a key to this i admit...if you don't know bout mona simpson homer's mom and her hatred of burns and him causing her to leave homer at a young age cause she was a radical vs his establishment 60's regime and now him being a nuclear plant owner and homer winning one on him for his daughter it just connects the story full circle even if that plot comes after this episode it predates this obviously timeline wise...it just has more build up and backstory that makes you care in retrospect..its such a defining moment for the show's original staff before they left...think about it we all know its the best episode bart gets an F has a top 3 moment but its not top 11 worthy even

    • @razkable

its hard to agree cause bart is still 10 30 years later and is still in 4th grade and he kinda dug his own grave and is an idiot who waits till the last second to study and allows himself to be distracted...I get its a fine episode but critic over sold the problem bart faces..he isn't that sympathetic honestly...we saw bart the genius hes a pretty bad kid all things considered...I just don't think its a top 15 simpsons episode...this show has higher standards..its a great season 2 episode...not seasons 3-6...they eat its lunch

I don,'t reali consider Bart to be a bad kid.
He's more like someone who takes pranks a little too seriously and would rather leave the brainwork to others and sees school as an unnecessary aspect of life and I can't really fault him for that given that gaming and clowning around can be a legit form of work in and of itself. Just take a look at rooster teeth, a company that rocketed in success from doing just that.
It's just that mindset and the technology in achieving it hadn't really arrived for him at the time the simpsons first aired.

The voice actor you were thinking of is the legendary Phil Hartman... Who is in fact, as you surmised, dead... Creepily enough, he was murdered by his wife with and committed suicide.... He was my favorite SNL cast member, and is sorely missed...😞

Funny thing for me is like Charlie I Absolutely Stink at Math, even with a Calculator I constantly have to be told how to do percentages. Outside of 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% I struggle like crazy, & doing long strings of anything outside of simple addition or subtraction on a calculator even without percentages involved is hit or miss depending on how long the equation is

no last exit to springfield no you only move twice no who shot mr. burns part 1 and 2?...no one fish two fish blowfish bluefish no separate vocations no summer of 4 ft 2 no radio bart no black widower no lisa's first word.. ....smdh thats not right..i agree with deep space homer, homer at the bat, homer the great, marge vs the monorail, treehouse of horror I-V are all classic 22 short films and cape feare..those are all amazing choices but sorry bart gets an f, lisa's wedding, marge vs. itchy and scratchy an homer's enemy are not on my list...they just don't touch me the way they did the critic...

honestly if it ended after like season 19 I would be fine..shit since then has been garbage...maybe 2 good episodes per season since then and many garbage ones...like i'm sorry but even into the mid teens half the season usually was worth watching from season 14 onwards...sure you got stinkers but its not all bad...I think 20 years is the max a comedy should go...how funny can you be in a third decade?..
