I thru-hiked southbound in 1981. I find it interesting to watch videos of current long distance hikers and see the things that haven't changed and the things that have changed a lot. Current hikers have cell phone and cameras that we didn't have and it's amazing to me to see how important these items are to current hikers. As a southbound hiker (I left Katahdin on Aug, 1, 1981 and reached Springer on Jan. 1, 1982) we saw very few people and things like trail names, trail magic, and the whole camaraderie just was not a part of my hike. Thanks for sharing.

Brings back a ton of memories watching this. That exposed ridge line after Wayah bald is where I felt an inner peace and decided to enjoy the last bit of my journey as you did. Walking into the NOC was a sad moment, but I will return when the time is right and make new memories.

Things will not get back to normal when people blindly follow moronic policies that are not based on reason nor science. Even the communist NY governor wants a "new normal". Only a communist knows what thus "new normal" might mean. I'm sure even Cuomo won't say but I'm sure he hopes it helps transform our once free nation into another totalitarian state. This virus was not a pandemic. It was a panic spread by false numbers & paranoia. The data & the media reporting on this flu virus have been bloated & inflated from day one. The data from the CDC shows the virus to be on par with influenza. No more or less deadly. But are the deaths from other illnesses reported for perspective? NO!!! Diabetes, Alzheimer's, heart disease, drunk drivers, hospital accidents & accidental poisoning claim more lives each than this virus. But the media puts a magnifying glass on each alleged Corona virus death to the exclusion of all other causes if death. Irrational! Unreasonable! Zero perspective! Unacceptable!

@@lt.sewell2792 There's an agenda within all this, and it's crystal clear when you see our freedom of speech being censored and countless videos of medical staff coming out about the numbers being taken down. Apple and Facebook (government owned or at least a puppet of) are working together to trace and share all of our information. Over what? A flu like virus that has a low number of deaths. Brave new world but keep hiking ya'll

Yeah !!!!we are getting out of the house tomorrow! Nantahala forest service number says all forest roads are open so we are gonna hop in the car in the am stop by Tallulah Gorge SP and take a walk then drive up to Wayah Bald and eat our packed at home lunch and enjoy whatever views are there to view....so excited...will keep compliant with distancing guidelines....but ,,,WE ARE GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE TOMORROW....so lucky to live in northeast Georgia and have the mountains of western NC and north Georgia as our backyard and playground. So sad for all these Thru hikers who have arranged their lives for this time of a lifetime experience to be snuffed out. Who knew....

It's kind of a bittersweet ending. We know it's the right thing to do and we are doing this because we love the trail and community so much. But it's also heartbreaking. For the same reasons.

Mount Cammerer Lookout Tower, YES to Hot Springs, Big Bald, The Beauty Spot, Roan Highlands, The Station at 19E, crossing the Dam at Watauga Lake and on in to Damascus - I was following 4 thru hikers this year and have felt as sad for each when the journey ended, You at The NOC, 1 in Hot Springs, and 2 north of Hot Springs closer to Erwin TN - but every one of y'all have said the same thing - you will be back - the trail will be waiting and I'll look forward to continuing the journey :)

@@DarwinOnthetrail In the early eighties I lived in Sedona, and ran a civil engineering office there, one in Cottonwood, and one in Flag. I'd read all of Harvey Butchart books, and loved to hike The Canyon. Mostly off the North Rim in Knab Creek, Thunder River, and Tapeats Creek areas. Aridzona holds a place in my heart. The Northern Arizona Museum of Natural History, in Flag, was one place I loved to hang. One of my surveyors was an amateur astronomer, and was connected with the Lowell Observatory, I got to spend an evening there looking at the moon. Memories, memories.

I do not understand why they asked people to stop their hikes. I can understand asking folks to not travel in to start hiking in the first place. But a bunch of healthy, fit, presumably covid-free hikers spending time away from people seems like the best-case scenario. They'll have short stays in small towns, but won't those towns' economies suffer due to reduced hiker traffic? And asking people to leave the back-country to get on planes and stay in hotels is counter productive. If it's about protecting those small towns, couldn't those towns do what Marfa is doing and ask people not to drive there? Unless there are really high numbers of injuries related to thru-hiking, I don't see how there would be a burden on hospitals, either. Seems like stopping the hikes is knee-jerk PR. Am I missing something?

So interesting to see that sudden shift in perspective, and how well you responded to it: in the last video you were surprised at how quiet the trail was, feeling the eeriness and enjoying it. But then here it's not just eerie, it's post-apocalyptic (with still much to enjoy).

As bad as New York is right now, I was lucky to hike in Harriman state Park last weekend. Bear Mtn was closed but I hiked the AT and pitched a tent by one of the shelters. At least the park has been open, people are hiking. It’s a good outlet for everyone in the hot zone at this time and a smart move to give people the escape. Once again NYC is ground zero. Good job bro, keep the faith people . Luv ya 😊❤️🇺🇸🌄

You are getting really good at making it feel just a little bit like I'm really there...just enough to more fully spark the imagination. Maybe someday I'll hike the AT. Either way, my local day trails await in the now!

I was planning to thruhike the AT for the third time this pate spring and then the virus debacle came along to delay my hike. God...I LOVE this Trail and thank you for these videos. Sadly they make me feel sad. I MISS this Trail. Not only the beauty of it but the comaraderie that I have experienced nowhere else in my life. But 2012 is just around the corner and hopefully I can thruhike it again then.
    Thank you, Darwin...

This stuff really scares me. Just started planning my first thru-hike on the PCT next year and I'm worried that this covid stuff might still be around/resurge next year. Hope you're doing well handling the disappointment as well as others. I can't imagine it's easy, especially or those who have had to put their lives/careers on hold.

I like the shots of you cooking and in your tent....I think it would do your content great justice to include a "in tent" or "at camp moment" segment....like we see the hiking ....your probably the best hiker in the country ...your pace is by far the fastest I've seen...but the in camp segment finalizes the day.....you can do as you please but I really think if you go ...wake up segment....hike segment followed by b roll.....to talk segment....discuss the hike...obstacles standouts etc....followed by an at camp or in tent clip....it would be perfect...

March 15 was my start date,...waited a couple and then decided to postpone. Set up all my gear in the back yard, started a fire and sat there for hours. Late into the night my 10 year old came out and asked me if I was going to be OK, an hour later my girl came out and did the same thing. Then my 4 year old brought me a nice cold Rolling Rock around midnight, we stared at the big dipper together out there in the dark. The AT has been a dream for me since 1979,......one more year won't hurt........

Kudos to you. Back in 1974 I quit my job to thru hike the AT and would have really been bummed out if I'd had to face the current situation.

What a beautiful, bittersweet little piece of history this video is. You've come a long way with your video skills, my friend. This video is so well made. Looking forward to seeing more from you!

Too bad. The shut-down was an over reaction. 8 states didn’t shut down and only asked people to practice social distancing. No reason for hikers to be forced off trail. Crazy stupid.

No doubt a gut-wrenching decision, but mad respect for making the decision to get off the trail. Not gonna lie, it would be real tempting to continue with the trail all to myself.

So, I had thought about the fact that emergency services were out of service, and because of the likelihood of injury, it was best to get off the trail. I also thought about hiker to hiker transmission. This is the first time I thought about the fact that hikers, who physically are the most likely to be asymptomatic carries, are hitting multiple towns in any 14 day period. Sucks that what should be a prime event of isolation, is still a cause of problems. We really are stuck inside.
