See, you can tell GvK and GxK were being real stingy with showing red blood in the violence and it's not even the case that the films are PG-13. Not only were G14 and Kong: Skull Island able to show brutality but since the joke in the beginning was brought up (funny one, BTW), I was reminded of the scene in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides where Blackbeard dies by the waters of the Fountain of Youth. That scene was so damn brutal with his flesh being ripped off of the bone and his skeletal hand reaching out to his daughter as he slowly dies AND it was from a PG-13 film! That's something you would see in a rated R film but here we are. So it's not really the case or entirely necessary for the Monsterverse to have an R-rated film, they just need to stop making the deaths more "kid-friendly".

Personally, I feel like with this new generation of kids going with an R-rated movie right now wouldn’t be the best for the Monsterverse. Decapitation, and dismemberment with red blood. Of course, for the sake of R-rating, I would have small to human sized carnivores butcher humans in realistic ways similar to real animals killing their prey. Nothing exaggerated, but still unsettling to watch. But also, yes, to use real catastrophes as inspiration for giant kaiju attack aftermaths would also be a sight to see. Albeit unsettling.

Depending on the situation, I do not mind a Rated R film, if that goes only for explicit violence and gore towards human characters like on the first Alien movie or The Relic (I love that one, and The Kothoga was a heck of a Monster). There's no need of vulgarity for the case, Just what is focused to action and drama on my opinion. But I need to say that not only Chinenese censorship is a factor to consider here, it is also the audience they are targeting, Young audience for the case. A lot of Kids were at the cinema WHEN I went to watch the New Empire, even some cute ones wearing a Godzilla suit, and having that market makes easy to exploit the merchadise focused on them like the Toy lines. That gives to the producers a great profit and won't renounce to it for changing the rating. I know there are a lot of adults still buy the toys as collectibles, but the Target still is the Young audience. Also I need to say Toho must have something to do with the Ratings. On few films there is some blood, but nothing too gruesome. Unlike Daei/Kadokawa and Tsurubaya, they have been adamant to not make any film to look gory for some reason. They allowed to the manga related to Heisei series, but not in the movies from the same Era, mantaining the level of blood or gore at the minimum And interesting point about the green blood is that reminds me what was done with the game The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time from 1998, and by that time was Rated E for Everyone (the equivalent of the Rate G from movies and series) . There was a scene where the final Boss after being wounded during the first stage of the fight he coughs and spits blood. On the original release it was red, but on the next re-issues Nintendo changed it to green plus some other changes that could generate controversy. After that, every official port, the 3DS Remake and emulation of the game came with those changes and unless you got the first issue of the game, you Will never see the red blood again. It's implied to make it more soft.

I don't think an R rating should be a goal. It should be a consequence, something required to tell a story the way it needs to be told.

Depending on the situation, I do not mind a Rated R film, if that goes only for explicit violence and gore towards human characters like on the first Alien movie or The Relic (I love that one, and The Kothoga was a heck of a Monster). There's no need of vulgarity for the case, Just what is focused to action and drama on my opinion.
But I need to say that not only Chinenese censorship is a factor to consider here, it is also the audience they are targeting, Young audience for the case. A lot of Kids were at the cinema WHEN I went to watch the New Empire, even some cute ones wearing a Godzilla suit, and having that market makes easy to exploit the merchadise focused on them like the Toy lines. That gives to the producers a great profit and won't renounce to it for changing the rating. I know there are a lot of adults still buy the toys as collectibles, but the Target still is the Young audience.
Also I need to say Toho must have something to do with the Ratings. On few films there is some blood, but nothing too gruesome. Unlike Daei/Kadokawa and Tsurubaya, they have been adamant to not make any film to look gory for some reason. They allowed to the manga related to Heisei series, but not in the movies from the same Era, mantaining the level of blood or gore at the minimum
And interesting point about the green blood is that reminds me what was done with the game The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time from 1998, and by that time was Rated E for Everyone (the equivalent of the Rate G from movies and series) . There was a scene where the final Boss after being wounded during the first stage of the fight he coughs and spits blood. On the original release it was red, but on the next re-issues Nintendo changed it to green plus some other changes that could generate controversy. After that, every official port, the 3DS Remake and emulation of the game came with those changes and unless you got the first issue of the game, you Will never see the red blood again. It's implied to make it more soft.
