Very nice review. It's great to have a review by someone who is about average level of most people who have been learning the guitar for a while, but not a highly advance music star.
I was curious how a little Knopfler would sound on this one. That is actually the first song I would had tried out. For the price tag, I am sold. Thanks Bro.
Kenny Mercer thanks man! I upgraded to one of the steel recording kings about a year later - I kinda wish I had kept this one. Love the new one for SURE! But this one sounded great in a different way. Totally worth it!!
What most of us are finding out is they need to be set up by a professional. The first one I bought was excellent neck ,action, shape, size , fit , but needed upgrades and fine finishing to the entire guitar. I took it back right away and got a step up to the mini bucker pickup . It is really good on the amplifier but feedback is a problem. Same thing I need to take it in and have it completely set up by professional. After that I know this resonator going to be a lot of fun. The reason I like these Recording King is they sound more authentic with delta blues , while the more expensive guitars sound like bluegrass.
I got this same guitar in black a month ago- I restrung it with Martin Retro 12's, and had slight intonation problems. The bridge is floating, so that's why it's difficult to intonate properly. I also have some tuning issues as well, but overall, it's an awesome little guitar, with a great price point and plenty inspiring. Nice noodling man, keep it up!
@@faautobahna9416 I got it from a Guitar Center in Chicago for I think $300. As I said, it has some slight intonation issues, but aside from that, I quite like it! It's a lot of fun to play, also with a slide too. I keep it in standard tuning usually, but I've open-chorded it a few times, and it's always nice. Each guitar is individual, however, so I don't recommend buying online- Always Try Before You Buy!
@@dannylundmark Thank you. Agree with not buying online but stores remain closed. I had played RPH R1 (guitar in this video and same specs I think as yours - RPH R2 MBLK) a while ago and really liked its sound and feel.
I picked up a black RPH R2 that seems to be modified. It has a Lace resonator low profile pickup and a Myers goose neck mic in the resonator. it has open gear tuners on it and i think they may be upgraded. the hardware was scrubbed of its shine but looks very vintage. I picked it up for 199.00 I hope it works out. wish me luck
Stock, these are crap period. That said, I bought one because they are well made body wise, and if you are willing to upgrade some basic parts they really do look cool and are well finished for the price. I replaced the cone, face plate and biscuit bridge first off with Stewmac parts. The tuners are pure crap as well, so I replaced them with a set of vintage Grover's 14:1. I set mine up for slide with a Grover nut in case I did want to go back to finger style. Now, It sounds FANTASTIC and performs flawless. I ended up paying as much for the up grades as I did the guitar, BUT, Since I put in a "Beard" Cone, It sounds like a higher end resonator now and has that warm, balanced and punchy projection and plays like a dream for around $350.00. You would pay twice that to get a guitar that plays and sounds anywhere close to this now.
I'm telling you brother if nothing else just replace the cone to a Beard brand cone. It will make your resonator sound almost like a Beard for an 8th of the price. The Beard brand cones sit higher in the well though so you will need to make some bridge adjustment. I just made a new one with a Maple bridge from Stew Mac because I wanted the maple anyway for a warmer tone. The face plate replacement also was a major upgrade, but the hole in the Stew Mac one is smaller so make sure you check it before you install and you can raise the hand guard on these which is really helpful. I have had several people tell me this resonator sounds fantastic, they think it is stock, which is now our secret.
Kevin Bradford - I love this idea. I had also thought about replacing the assembly with the. National hot plate - the one with a built in tele pickup - but i think I'll take your suggestion instead - and just add an external pup - thanks bro!!!
It is amazing what $200.00 in upgrades will do. I hear all the time about people commenting about Why buy instruments and then spend more money to upgrades. In this case it is a fantastic deal, because i don't have $2,000 to spend on a Beard, but I did the have $200-300.00 to spend in upgrades. As a side note, I have played a couple different Beard's resonators now since I fixed up my Recording King. Not only did I like the size of my Recording King better, I couldn't tell a difference in sound quality, because I used all of Beard's parts, (except tuners) to upgrade. Have a great one!
Hey man! Thanks for the feedback! I don’t know what the Rattlesnake version is. But the Dirty 30 resonator is not acoustic/electric. It’s just acoustic. Cheers,
Oh sorry. You have a Recording King Dirty 30's Single 0 accoustic resonator like it says in your description. I was thinking you had a Recording King Dirty 30's Mini-Bucker accoustic Electric Resonator.. If you ever have a chance to get a Minnie Bucker which plugs in it would be cool to see a video that compares the two.
@@davidbingley6734 I actually found a few years after this one - the recording king full metal with the same etch design that’s on the National style-O that Knopfler uses. It’s awesome!! And I’m getting a National hot plate for that one - I’ve just had no time in the past few years to record a demo - I wanted to do a before and after. Thanks again for all the recommends and interest!!
Hey Tyler, does this guitar have a removable handrest? I like to play with a lot of palm muting and I would want to take the bridge cover off... it looks like there are four screws on it in this video? But online, a lot of pictures of the Dirty 30's reso do not have any screws in the handrest
Jackson Grimm hey man - the hand rest IS removable but - on a resonator it's not quite as easy to palm mute - you gotta be gentle because your whole bridge/cone is floating - so any pressure can change your tuning...
sorry got your price info watching the video complete! can you please tell what strings are you using. my local store has this used. i am almost decided on buying it.
FAautobahn A absolutely - the one thing I will say - any set of strings you get - get it setup by a pro if you're not versed on bridge alignments etc. the heavier the strings - the harder they push down on the cone.

Romeo and Juliet what a great song to resonate

Good to know. I'm considering getting RPH-R2 Black. Where did you get it from and how much if you don't mind me asking. Any other issues with it?

I have no idea why - but I never even CONSIDERED looking at Stewmac.. That’s a great plan!

Ordered some vintage Grover machines and they're a different hole size. Did you drill the headstock?
Nice playing. You have a really great voice!
Great song man. I love Dire Straits! Sounds good enough with slide to me by the way.
Love the plucking style. Your singing is great.
I thought those plugged in from the back. Is it a rattlesnake version?

if you are spending some money upgrading this guitar, don't bother buying a bone nut....it already has one.
Thanks for the helpful video. Did you buy it used or new. What was the price if you don't mind me asking?
Just bought this, what strings do you reccomend?
sorry got your price info watching the video complete! can you please tell what strings are you using. my local store has this used. i am almost decided on buying it.
FAautobahn A I think I put elixirs on it - just to try it and see how they sound. I kinda like em.
Thanks. and i imagine it takes in usual acoustic guitar strings .. and one can do light / medium / extra light depending on choice of guage.

right. will do that.
