- Sir Keir Starmer has said he is “absolutely convinced” that disrupting criminal gangs bringing people across the English Channel in small boats is the way to tackle the migrant crisis.
The Prime Minister has faced criticism from his political opponents for diverting efforts to tackle unauthorised migration away from deterrents like the Rwanda plan.
But speaking after a summit on small boats chaired by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Sir Keir was adamant that the Government’s new approach was the correct one.
The summit comes at the end of a week which saw at least 12 people die after their boat was “ripped apart” off the northern French coast while they attempted to cross the Channel.
Kevin O’Sullivan fumes at the PM’s statement and says “smashing gangs won’t help” the crisis unless they deter migrants.

I gave a progress update to my senior management at work today, this explained how our project is doing against our plan. Starmer has no plan, so how can we be "making progress". I am 65 and i cant remember a more clueless PM and government, they are so out of their depth it is unreal!

When starmer talks about "smashing the gangs" I cringe so hard. It's like when your great aunt says "The Facebook" or "the internettings". Or seeing your gran dancing drunk. It's just like that.

One side of my family are from generations of Lifeboat men who risked their own lives rescuing those in distress at sea. It isn't in their nature to be cowards or cruel.

I agree that they should be arrested and tried and returned on the point of entry. They should be arrested before they leave the beach and be tried the very next day and deported back to their home country with a ban on returning as a legal migrant. But then what to do with those who refuse to disclose their country of origin? This is how the Rwanda plan should have worked. All tried and convicted illegal immigrants should be asked where they came from and to provide proof to make sure they don't try and chance getting sent somewhere nicer. And if they refuse or if they lie or can't provide proof... Rwanda you go.

Illegal migrants who jump from France to the UK in boats are not fleeing from persecution. They are fleeing from discontent. But when they get to the UK they always discover that their discontent has not gone but it has changed its shape and form. Discontent is found everywhere. Many of the legitimate citizens of the UK are experiencing discontent but where should they go in order to escape from it ?

Well only 20% of the electorate voted for it, but because of our ridiculous electoral system Labour now have a huge majority when 80% either by action or inaction voted against them. Still, as things are progressing they’ll have no chance getting a second term.
