- Highlights from Ted's Quick Climb Friday show from the 26th April 2024 with F-15E Strike Eagle and F-35A Lightning II executing Quick Climb departures.
So what is a Quick Climb?
Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 320mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.
What is an Unrestricted Climb?
It is the same as a quick climb.
Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. Quick climbs can also be used in a combat scenario for both offensive and defensive, either getting out of a base quick from attacks or scramble to intercept. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron...ooh yeah!
Can pilots just do quick climbs?
No, all take offs are cleared for a standard take off / local climb out but a pilot can request a quick climb but this has to be cleared by ATC.
RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons; 492nd FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the recently reactivated 'Valkyries', the 495th Fighter Squadron. It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was originally built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940. The airfield started life out as decoy airfield (Q-site) to RAF Mildenhall, which is about 5.5 miles the way the backwards crow flies. RAF Mildenhall was an established bomber station built in 1934 and to protect it, Lakenheath was chosen to become a decoy, to take any attacks. However, things changes and it was decided that RAF Lakenheath would become a satellite station to Mildenhall.
Lakenheath was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group.
On the 15th January 1941, the US Army Air Corps activated the 48th Bombardment Group (Light). During WW2, the 492d, 493d and 494th Fighters Squadrons were trained and were significantly involved in the Normandy Landings, Operation Overlord and the Invasion of France. Their combat sorties involved bombings raids over bridges, railway lines and carried out reconnaissance missions. It was on the 10th July 1952, the Oklahoma Air National Guard 137th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France was redesignated as the 48th Fighter-Bomber Wing.
The Statue of Liberty was actually made near the base and the Mayor of the town gave a ceremonial name to the base as the "Statue of Liberty Wing". The 48th Fighter Wing is the only Wing in the USAF to have a number and a name!
It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. LR, LS and LT were the tail codes for the base with the F-100's but when they transitioned to the Phantom, a temporary tail code of LK was introduced until a few months later it changed once more to LN, which is active today.
In 1977 a fourth squadron joined Lakenheath's 48th, the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were known as the "Thundervarks" flying the F-111's. However, they deactivated in 1991. They also sported the green tail flash.
In 1991, The 48th Tactical Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too. The 495th disbanded with the retirement of the F-111 in that year but returned 30 years later in 2021 with the F-35A.

This is where the magic takes place QCF at RAF Lakenheath with Nikos and Ted and the 48th FW not forgetting the magnificent F-15's and F-35's and all those fweeeps
Oii oiii Debbie. So many magical times here are the 48th 😎 🗽🇺🇸
This never gets old
Oiii oiii Babs 🗽🇺🇸
The Americans have some kit boy 👍🇬🇧🇺🇲
Oii Oii Ted & Nikos, wonderful compilation stream, bravo. What better way to start a Saturday morning, brekkies with F-15 & F-35's doing QC departures. Good to see the RNAF visitors, this was a great day. Thank you RAF Lakenheath & the mighty 48th FW
Oii Oii Colin. It’s such a great base. Love finishing the week here 🗽🇺🇸
@@TedConingsby It certainly is, well done on providing such wonderful stream/coverage for those of us who cannot get there. I'm old enough to remember going down more than 30yrs ago to watch the mighty 495th "Thunder Vaarks" F-111's, & of course now they are the awesome F-35's. The F'111 was a sight to behold, & the noise! Ooooooh yeeeehh!
It never ceases to amaze us how low jet fighter aircraft the F35 and F15 can fly at over 200 mph only feet above the runway then pull up vertically. Fantastic videography thanks very much for the clip Nikos.😊
Oii Oii Edward thanks man. It is always a joy to be at the 48th
Yep, brilliant! I love how they are all so fast they have to come off burner or they'll overspeed their still retracting undercarriage! The second it's up, the can(s) light up & the rocket launches.
Oohh yeah 🗽🇺🇸
I was wondering why they came off afterburn, raised the undercarriage and then went back to afterburn. The elevator to raise the nose is very aggressive, amazing amount of movement.
Awesome. Simply Awesome. No words need be said.
Yep, this is what Quick Climbs are all about. No messing around, we are outta here! USAFE, way to go indeed! Tremendous!!
Oii oiii Margo thank you so much. It’s the one and only prelude to anyone’s weekend oohhh yeah 🗽🇺🇸
this is awesome 👌 thank you @Ted and nikos now we know why they call this quick climb Friday
Oii Oii Julie thank you. Oooohh yeah 🗽🇺🇸

Those F-15s shake the earth and then climb like a homesick angel. Wow.
Can't get enough of your videos ❤
Oii oiii Janet thank you so much

Where else can you go for Quick Climbs by the ton? Best shots, best action, best Aileron Roll, its all here. From our dry and frying Presenter with the celebrated 2 in one shot.
F35A's are my type of noise meister but here you see why the F15E is so revered.
Magic! Saturday mornings will never be the same, of Fridays, or any day of the week. 48FW you done it again.
Oii Oii Dan thank you for your comments. Glad you like the 2 in 1 shot 😎 🗽🇺🇸
@TedConingsby you know it's my absolute favourite. A magic shot.. When it's F35 then even better 😍👍
Good morning 😀from Birmingham
Oii oiii Birmingham 🗽🇺🇸
Classic quick climbs with some car alarms. 48FW bringing the action as usual for Ted’s QCF.
Oiii oiii Sie another classic QCF
Would be interesting to see an F-15EX mod w/ GE power, CFT removed, centerline fuel tank only, in quick climb ...
🗽🇺🇸
I did miss QCF this week 😢🫡
Oii oiii Captain A , hope you enjoy the replay
Oii Oii Ted 😀
