I was a huge Giant Fan as soon as I first heard them in 1973 and, for me, Civilian isn't a good Giant album. It isn't bad, much better than its predecessor GFAD but what Derek calls growth, I call loss: Gone were the violin, cello, xylophone, flutes, trumpets and even the twinkling sounds from Kerry's keyboards. It rocked and you could see the link to older songs like «Working all Day» or »Cry for Everyone» but it didn't have the depth that accompanied those hard rocking songs on the old records.
In many respects, Gentle Giant did the right thing by finishing up after the Civilion tour. They were true to themselves. I don't like Genesis of the 80s or Yes for that matter. ELP came back in the 90s and that was a disaster. Also, they resisted the temptation to reform and kudos to them for that. They were one of the greats of prog rock and their music stands the test of time.
I can listen to Derek talk about Giant for hours. Thanks for doing these Gregg.
A very enjoyable interview. Gentle Giant were about music. Great art.
Derek is great, I love Gary and the whole GG, Thanks Gregg!!!
Thanks Gregg!!! As always, I appreciate all you do!

Title for Derek's book: The missing piece.
Simone Dupree and big sound I loved the bside to kites like the sun like the fire , bit more progressive to me .
Kites is on a different level than GG
How about “Giant for a life” …..as a book title?

Gregg any chance you can get Kerry in for an interview?
Civilian is not a good album, it's a DAMN GREAT ALBUM! Derek Schulman, A Gentle Giant in His Own Write.

What accent is that???????? Most probably a mix between Portsmouth and Scotland, I presume... never heard anything similar to this...
