  • Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Control Explained segment of Gaming University. Upon entering the Maintenance Sector of the Oldest House, Jesse is tasked with repairing the Coolant Pumps and Energy Converters of the NSC. According to Ahti, without these repairs the entire Power Plant would blow. However, the details about how the NSC generates power is classified.
    Clues about the NSC's nature are littered throughout the Oldest House and even different Thresholds. In this video, we will piece together the bread crumbs in order to answer the question. What is the NSC?
    Please feel free to have free discussion in the comments section below.

I didn't pick up on Ahti's comments though, but later I found the document. Control has so many stuff like this that builds up the lore and the universe in such a rich way, high above most games out there, I feel - it's amazing. It is my pleasure to put these together for you all. But yeah I think that is why this game has such rich lore is because they don't flat out tell you. If you enjoy this type of plot device I highly suggest playing Alan Wake. It does this exact same type of story layering. Remedy is great at it.
      It’s why most games feel flat and perfunctory - they usually just have an NPC telling you to “do this because y” and you do it like a robot. Remedy follows the classic tradition of “show don’t tell” and because of that, the worlds feel lived in and deep.

    As usual Trench fails to see the long term effects of his actions. Having a rogue element with the power of Northmoor deep within the FBC is a disaster waiting to happen several times worse then the surprises left hanging around the Investigations Sector. The risks far outweigh any rewards the FBC gain by a more subtle energy Bill.

      Trench had too many personal issues to really so more than exert absolute control. I could be wrong but I feel the death of his daughter caused him to get worse with his need to micromanage and control every aspect of the bureau. He doesn't plan long term though. His short sightedness led to so many issues that we are now having to clean up. This is probably another one of his legacies that Jesse will deal with.

    • @TheDubDisciple

      @@GamingUniversityUoG I don’t know. Personally I think Trench “bringing home” work shows not only a lack of foresight but a level of hubris few other characters can come close to matching. Regardless of whatever Trench brought home it ultimately led to the demise of his daughter. This callous treatment of Bureau materials would only come from one so convinced he could weather any and all possible consequences that result from his actions
      I think after successfully subduing Northmoor and becoming Director, Trench’s personality shifted. We see direct evidence of this in Northmoor where his personality changed almost immediately after picking up the Service Weapon.
      It will be interesting to see how things progress for Jesse in the future. She’s the third Director of the FBC to be linked with the Board and the previous 2 were both... removed by their successors one way or another so not sure how I’d feel about the job myself lol

    The NSC may as well be a solar furnace.
    All hints to a person which may have had attached onto their person a lot of unknown items, this then changed the state of human to something else.
    The strongest known power is the sun as a thermal source which we, as humans, can perceive, yet the 'truest' and strongest form of power is inconceivable.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  3 года назад +5

      I think the strongest 'theoretical'power source we have now is Zero Point Energy. I haven't researched it much but I believe it is the potential energy between sub atomic particles.
      For northmoor he became a vessel for too much paranatural energy. I'm just curious if it was because he bound too much, meaning this may happen to Jesse in the future, or if it was a specific OoP that caused this.

      In the end, their unlimited energy supply, as you have stated, opens them up with more budget and covers their building's (old house) power consumption.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG Come to think of it, during the Foundation DLC, didn't the Board give the reason for Jesse initially only recieving one of the crystal manipulation powers being along the lines of "Only one may be chosen/handled"? Makes you wonder if that decision was informed by Northmoor getting screwed up by going over his paranatural capacity so to speak. What's more, after the Former sneaks Jesse back in to acquire the second power, the Board sounds genuinely worried/frightened of what could happen if she didn't stop, then afterwards came across as embarrassed/relieved that nothing happened.
      If I had to guess, Polaris is Jesse's Ace in the Hole for offloading paranatural energy safely without containing all of it inside her physical form. I get the feeling, mostly from the fact that the NSC's upper Terminal has a distinct warning for movement within the NSC that during "Normal" operation Northmoor is asleep, or more likely Unconscious, that part of keeping Northmoor "cool" is to keep him calm, Sedated.
    This also ties into Jesse's bonding with Polaris protecting her from much of the negative Para-natural, as Jesse is recorded with much greater effect from Objects of Power then even Northmoor pre- Sarcophagus, as well as Altered Items (not considered bind-able) without the same abnormalities associated with Northmoor's Transformation.
    Under "Normal" conditions, I doubt Northmoor is in any state fit to plan, to rage, or even think within the NSC... but it also says something that the NSC can keep a Resonance Based Lifeform out of Northmoor, especially since unless something else was exploding due to overload the only thing that could be making vibrations large enough to shake the Maintenance Sector after Jesse's repaired the coolant pumps but before repairing the converters is Northmoor, which suggests the NSC doesn't absorb vibrations.

    Always enjoy new videos from you! I had some slightly different interpretations and I wonder what you think:
    - What if Northmoor was a willing participant in this containment scheme? In this scenario, Northmoor is aware of the catastrophic damage he can cause when uncontained. Trench commends him on going along with the first iteration of the NSC in the "Northmoor" hotline call. In this scenario, NSC-01 landing at the formation is, as far as FBC employees are concerned, an accident and merely the formation pulling an unusually large object to itself, rather than an escape attempt by the former director.
    - I have the impression that I read about how other employees saw Northmoor as someone obsessed with power, always hungry for more. What if the collective thoughts of his colleagues eventually caused him to become an altered receptacle to the idea of something with great power--only not organizational but physical?

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  3 года назад +6

      Oh absolutely. In one hotline, Tremch mentioned that Northmoor went along with the idea to house him there. But he did comment that, "...he didn't have a choice." My interpretation is that his excess energy outputs were becoming so out of control it would inevitably lead to his death. If this is the case his participation is more an act of self preservation. Decades of solitary confinement can do things to a persoms mind. There is even evidence on the infrared scans of him that he may have been corrupted by the Hiss but cannot get out of the chamber.

    Due to the possibility that Northmoor bound many Objects of Power to himself, his frequencies/resonance began to increase.

    Great vid! What I wonder is, how did the Northmoor end up in there? Was it a voluntary containment? Or did he get put in there by force? Is he sentient in there or is it just a mass of energy in the form of a former Director? If former, is it hell for him in there? So many ethical/emotional questions to explore.

      It is implied that Trench gave him the proposition and didn't really give him the choice. He said, "Northmoor went along with it, not that he had a choice." I paraphrase from one hotline. All i can figure is it was a form of self preservation. He might have died if his excess energy outputs got out of control. This way he lived...if you can call that living.

Jesse would have to send Northmoor to a very cold or 100% water threshold. This has been constantly troubling my mind, ever since I scaled the power plant that first time, and stumbling upon the topside monitoring station and seeing the status report on the red monitors: "NSC INTERNAL MOVEMENT DETECTED"...
    The name of this structure is deceptive: It does not contain the deceased remains of Northmoor, seeing as he appears very much alive in there, and is CLEARLY being confined against his will. Looking at the heat signature surveillance monitors makes this painfully clear: He is strung up by his wrists into what must be a very uncomfortable kneeling pose. This is not a "Northmoor Sarcophagus Container", this is the "Northmoor Torture Chamber". As for the Bureau staff having no clue what is actually inside? They absolutely do know! But for obvious reasons, this is not something they are going to share the details on with Jesse.
    Gonna split this into several comments btw. Got some dialogue transcrips to share for the next one.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  2 года назад +1

      Considering how EVERYTHING is classified under Trenchs command I can see how only senior staff or people who were working here 30 years before would know he was there.
      Trench commented that Northmoor went along with it but it may have either been under duress or whatever. This feels like a plot thread that will be pulled sooner or later. Then we'll get more details.

    • @Tumbledweeb
      @Tumbledweeb 2 года назад

      My apologies! I could've SWORN I had posted about Emily comments last night. So sorry about that! Here it is:
      At Crossroads, "Northmoor" is a dialogue option when conversing with Emily, during which she'll say:
      "[...]Regardless, Northmoor was eventually forced to... Well, we don't need to get into that.[...]"
      Riddle me this: Can you think of another exhange with Emily, where she has declined to ramble on about whatever? Cause I'm pretty sure that that has never ever happened before!
      She then hesitantly adds that Northmoor and Trench both disappeared under "suspicious circumstances".

    • @Tumbledweeb
      @Tumbledweeb 2 года назад

      @@GamingUniversityUoG As for Trench saying it was voluntary confinement? I'm gonna have to call bullshit on that. The evidence suggests the exact opposite being true.
      As for this being highly classified information? With that in mind, I do find it HILARIOUS that "NORTHMOOR SARCOPHAGUS CONTAINER" is written right on the outside of the structure, for everyone to see, and internal surveillance monitors are right underneath.
      Sounds like an assclown thing to do if the topic matter is highly sensitive and classified.

    • @xSaintOfSinnersx
      @xSaintOfSinnersx 2 года назад +1

      @@Tumbledweeb here I come almost a year later to comment here lol.
      Emily might knew about it because of her job and position, maybe she had to do something related to the NSC but I don't think it was of general knowledge since the information is very limited and a lot is classified.
      Since there have been 2 NSC, maybe in the first containment it was somewhat voluntary. Maybe Trench convinced Northmoor that it was a temporary measure until they find how to deal with his overheating and after a while of seeing no progress, Northmoor got impatient and escaped, having as results the collapse of NSC 01. For NSC 02 I can't imagine how they put him in there and I don't think any personnel is able to read "Northmoor Sarcophagus Container" from that high and let alone have access to that part of the maintenance sector.
      For monitoring, there maybe was a few selected personnel to that area, after all it's important to know what's going on there and they by force needed people to check on it

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  3 года назад +4

      Oldest House? Yes very likely it would be decimated. In terms of the City that is up for debate. One theory that FBC has about where exactly the House is mentions that it may not exist on Earth. That our reality is just a threshold connected to the House. If the threshold isn't open then the blast would be contained. Again that is only is that theory is true.

    Whatever the board are/is they seemed to try and elevate themselves to the kinds of being that Polaris/Hedron and the Hiss are. But they lack the ability to fully take over someone like the Hiss can. The board can bind themselves to items and through those items communicate. Northmoor looks like an experiment into that avenue that went wrong. The board must be going crazy to not be able to skip the middle man like Resonance based lifeforms can, to not be able to exist in the material plane to affect it like they clearly want. The board uses inorganic tethers to exist and Polaris/Hedron and the Hiss use organic tethers.

I wonder if he’ll explode when he dies? He’s got to be pretty old by now. Just a few more decades maybe. When jesse was talking to dylan and was suddenly talking to polaris dylan/hiss, was extremely pissed to see polaris. This gets me thinking, if the hiss was unable to corrupt polaris/Jesse and already had full control of Dylan, why didnt they use dylan as a weapon against jesse?? The board was trying to regain control of certain o.o.p's and altered items from the hiss but failed so, why didnt the hiss use those to kill jesse?? The hiss had everything under their control and yet, they still lost. If the hiss wanted northmoore free, why didnt they try with more force?? Not sure if it’s mentioned before as I haven’t read enough but just wanted to vent this idea
    What if “the Former” is the Former Director as in Northmore.
    The board doesn’t like the former and in the document Northmore says that “the board knows what he had become”
    Just my two cents
    And sorry if this is already a know fact but I haven’t heard it yet in the videos I have watched and stuff I have read :)

      At this point in time Northmoor is still alive and in the NSC. Former has a history dating back to Ash Jr. at the very least. Definitely' the former used to be part of the board. My hypothesis is it was kicked out for talking to Ash.

    Anyone else playing Returnal right now simply because it looked similar to Control in the trailers? lmao

      I keep hearing about Returnal this past week. I haven't played it but soon enough I'll have an announcement relating to it.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG It’s an EXTREMELY difficult game but I absolutely love the world. It’s like Control combined with the Alien franchise.

    Science is application of inductive logic. So possessions etc etc etc are not against science and if evidence suggests they exist even if they can not be understood yet there is no reason to disregard them especially if they are useful even if a proper model has not been Created. IRL general relativity and quantum physics do not match each other yet both are used.
