Rama Rajguru I’m studying engineering at UIUC and environmental engineering is a category in civil engineering. So you would get a bachelors in civil engineering but specialize in environmental engineering. This is the case at most school while others have you major in civil and minor in environmental

After researching types of jobs environmental engineers actually do it's very disheartening. Seems like most environmental engineers work for the government, do lots of paperwork and deal with policies/politics. Basically let's go work for a company and make sure they are abiding to regulations set by the federal government. This to me doesn't sound like helping the environment, just helping whoever is paying you to 'get by'. This is contrary to doing field work, scientific studies, saving/improving the planet, etc., the fun and meaningful stuff that I would hope to do...

I feel the same way, I don't know what to do! Maybe study Environmental Science instead? But I'm a bit worried about the big difference in wages..

@@kellikall Exactly Broc Queen. I'm trying to figure it out as well. Environmental Science does seem much more appealing! I'd rather be happy with my work and fulfilling my purpose rather than taking on a career just to make more money... I believe that would lead to a much more satisfying life overall.

@@jakerodgers9151 Yes absolutely! But at the same time I find everything kind of unclear, how big is the possibility to do research in the environmental field as an engineer? In the school I want to go to there are several masters that sound appealing to someone who wants to research, like Sustainable Technology, Chemical engineering for Energy & Environment, etc. (E&E is the name of the engineering programme I'll be in)
Are you in uni currently? LMK if you come across any new info about this hehe, it's nice to find someone else in the same shilly-shallying seat haha :)

What u said is all true, however it really is hard to find a scientist job outside of academia and nonprofits probably - there are consulting firms that hire field biologists but there are so many more engineering positions up for hire >< haha so unless environmental science majors figure out the psychology in getting the entire world to invest more in cleaning and protecting the environment, i dont think there will be many scientist positions that are not consulting or regulations-related available :/

Shpuld I become a civil engineer for more job opportunities, and work in the utilities sector doing environmental work? Thanks!

Get a work permit in the USA. Canada does not take this field seriously. All jurisdictions in Canada see this as an area to cut back on. Idiotic attitude but that is the way it is. Hah. I see these environmental companies offices here where I live. There is never any activity going on in or around them. I seriously think the permanent staff in them consists of a secretary and someone to manage the office and go out to do assessments. I would say the industry has an attrition business model, but the business model is more like skeletal. If you manage to get a job at some Cdn. firm you won't learn the business you will just learn how to play politics to keep your job.
