    As a guy who's not very into Death Metal, I underestimated the level of artistry it could produce. This album is awesome, and I'm super impressed with the band and the caliber of musicianship and creativity here.

      I think a lot of people probably underestimate the amount of creativity in death metal. It's a metalhead music nerd's paradise. I was never the biggest fan (or hater) of old school death metal, brutal death/slam or deathcore, liked stuff here and there, but there are so many bands in tech death, prog death, deathgrind & other death-adjacent subgenres over the last decade pushing boundaries in so many different directions, technically/instrumentally and/or progressively/musically, it's a wild rabbit hole to jump into.

      @@mediumvillain An update on the matter since it's been two years since I left that comment, I still don't listen to a lot of Death Metal, but I've heard at least a handful of projects I'm pretty sure are DM now and I enjoy it when other genres have Death Metal influence.

    As for my favorite, probably Drain of Incarnation. Really one of three that especially hit me. Other major highlights include Reverie On the Onyx and A.U.M.
    Update: I think Acrid Canon is my favorite now.

    If you watch the documentary, Oli talks about the concept for the songs/lyrics. It's not random at all. All of the song titles make sense.

    Well considering their last album came out a bit ago they probably played and practiced the bits they liked.
    Like Dean said Tobi integrated melodic stuff he’s been playing for awhile and they enjoyed it, it gave the album spice and new meaning without loosing out on it being heavy as balls.
    And for Spencer I’m sure it was just on the spot.

    Nice reaction / review dude! I'm a big fan of tech death but have 0 musical understanding. I think what blows me away about Archspire is that their songs are so coherent and internally consistent. Let me put it this way: there's a lot of tech death out there with music that's written to show off how good the musicians are. But it seems like the ideas of the songs are like a patchwork of technical complexity in such a way that it's almost like the purpose of the song is to facilitate that technical complexity / pace. With Archspire, it feels much more like the pace / technical complexity serve the ideas of the song, rather than the songs being written to enable a certain style. Like you get the "wow" factor of how impressive the musicians are, but you *also* get a song with depth and substance. Really impressive stuff, I can't stop listening to this album.

      As a classically trained musician, the writing is definitely inspired by traditional compositions. Hell they even throw in Lacrymosa by Mozart into one of the songs. Doesnt feel technical for the sake of technicality. All the songs have a distinct feel and the tech elements serve each song, instead of each song serving the tech parts.

  • @xNeuhTactics
    @xNeuhTactics 9 месяцев назад +2

    The most likely reason why the motif in the beginning of Reverie on the Onyx was so familiar is because it's the same melody from Mozart's Requiem in D minor, Lacrimosa. They also use classical runs in other songs and they make it fit so well.

  • @honichi1
    @honichi1 2 года назад +7

    the most interesting thing is that all of these songs are above 300bpm which means that whenever Spencer (the drummer) is playing quarter notes he's actually playing at above 20hz which means it's just one tone instead of individual notes.

    The reason 'Reverie on the Onyx' sounds familiar and Neo Classical is because it is Mozart. Check out Lacrymosa some time.

  • @TheTanmoy1990

    The classical motif from Reverie on The Onyx is from Mozart's Lacrymosa (Or the Requiem hymn, if you really want to be a nut).
    These bois love their classical references.
    Also, I do believe their tracks all follow a central storyline revolving around the extra-dimensional shenanigans of the A.U.M. (Based on the S.C.P. Foundation).

    Bleed the Future: 10 reactions. Gloire Éternelle: 0 reactions. You gotta do it man, so many of us would appreciate it. It's one of the best tech death albums and released the same day as Bleed the Future (in fact FF announced first, dunno why Archspire decided to release the same day, really overshadowed FF). Gonna be brutally honest but the FF album just didn't do it for me. Great songs, great writing, great musicianship, but it wasn't at all memorable. Top notch musicians, who write music for musicians. Doesn't translate well to casual listeners or anyone who doesn't geek out over all the instrumentation.
