In season tournament is sort of like cups for soccer. It’s pretty cool. Maybe they can call up players from the g league when players need to rest , and in the final game just go w your best lineups
the difference is, that the cup tournaments in soccer are their own thing, separate from the regular season. The cup games, counting towards the season diminishes its meaning.
@@davidtran1360 no it doesn't. It upgrades it. If you know anything about cup soccer alot of games are used to rest players. In this case you are extra motivated to use your starters since it also counts towards the regular season.
they don't need to call up players, they are not playing more games as they advance like in soccer (unless it's the final game). I agree with @stinkosm, I think it's cool that the games count for double (except the final, which doesn't need to count for more). It's like a mix of domestic cups, international cups (with the format), and it's its own new thing.
In soccer if you win a treble it’s a memorable season that will go down in the teams history, if this tournament picks up traction winning both the finals and the tourney could be something that could boost a franchises legacy
As a fan of both European Soccer and Basketball, this tournament may seem weird at first, but when this gains traction, we might get some good NBA nights
Anyone who doesn't get it I seriously question their comprehension skills. The tournament starts off with groups (each conference) then the 8 teams left after the Group Play will face off until the finals. There's literally NOTHING more to it.
Tbh, they should all care. Even if it's nowhere near as important as the Finals, something about being the FIRST to win this new tournament sounds kind of nice.
I’m so glad shaq doesn’t give an F about the narrative and exposed how ridiculous the in season tournament is. Nobody cares who was the best at the beginning, that’s the entire point of the regular season. In addition, why are they playing in the randomest cities? They are purely doing this to increase their profit margins by getting people to treat regular season games like they are playoff games because they make more money that way.
Last year the NBA players were like Shaq and Chuck, they didn’t care about the tournament. Then the NBA brought in lots of money and now the players care. Players on a team that loses in the quarterfinals: $50,000 Players on a team that loses in the semifinals: $100,000 Players on a team that loses in the championship: $200,000 Players on a team that wins the championship: $500,000
The reason why I don't really care about the in-season tournament is because there's nothing to be won other than cash for the players. In soccer, cup tournaments end up with qualification for continental tournaments. If the winner of the in-season tournament could get e.g., a play-in spot guaranteed, or even something like better draft odds, then there's something at stake
I really don't understand the point of a tournament when it's all the same teams playing yet again. There's a point to mid-season tournaments in a sport like football (european football) where teams from lower leagues get a chance to play against bigger sides, and every now and then cause an upset, plus the fact that most of those tournaments are treated as opportunities for players who might not be regular starters for their clubs to get a chance to shine. But this is just more of the exact same that you get night in and night out during the regular season, with a dash of colour added in.
The fun of European cups is that almost every team in the country, from the amateurs until the top teams can play in the cup and sometimes the local no name amateur teams beats the pros and even reaches the finals. I'd love to see NBA teams go up against top NCAA teams, see how the top talents line up against the pros, G-league teams embarrass NBA teams etc
Yeah this would make it so much better. Maybe even some European teams too. Then there would be a lot more pride at stake for nba players, plus we'd see some huge upsets.
I love the sentiment, but I just don't see the giant killing happening in basketball nearly as frequently as it does in soccer. In soccer the lesser team can park the bus and hope for a counter attack, win 1-0 or draw and win a penalty shootout. Basketball doesn't allow for an analogous strategy.
Make the all star game determine who gets homecourt during the finals like baseball…and make the in season tourney winner have an automatic bid to the playoff 👀👀👀
If anyone follows soccer, it's basically a cup competition in a European league. Like the FA Cup or Carabao Cup in the Premier League, for example. That's the inspiration for the tournament I would think. It's a really good idea from Adam Silver and I think it makes things more exciting and interesting, allowing the players to have something else to play for and add to their legacies. I know a lot of dumb North Americans are gonna say "Mickey Mouse trophy" or something and some people like Shaq for example are close minded just because it's new, but if it continues on for 5, 10, 15 years, I'd like to hope it'll gain more prestige.
But the FA and Carabao Cup includes teams from multiple tiers, while this tournament in particular are the same 30 teams. Adam Silver should expand it, not keep it within just the NBA squads.
@@DIAC1987 Well it's a new thing, right... who knows how it'll evolve over time, or if it even will, who knows. That would be very interesting though, but it may interfere with the regular season, so not sure how they would make that work.
@@ant4613 I am pretty sure the other leagues begin around the same time, and its an indoor sport. All they'd have to do is be willing to cut/pause their regular season to make this tournament last from November to Christmastime---which lets be honest is when everyone feels like the NBA season actually starts.
I’m one of the dumb North Americans who actually appreciates ONE champion. European soccer is like Oprah: You get a trophy You get a trophy You get a trophy Everyone look under your seat!!! A trophy!!!!! But it’s just me, a dumb North American 🎤
Phony money grab. You can’t manufacture a competition like this- it’s awkwardly squeezed in, difficult to understand, and meaningless compared to the season trophy.
The problem is then all the previous seasons of the NBA and the records and the stats don't mean as much as they do now. It disrupts the integrity in the history of the game.
I honestly don't understand any NBA fans that are upset about this. All of these games (except the final) would be regular season games these teams have to play regardless so if this add an extra competitive incentive those games I can't see how that's a bad thing.
I know right? Even the final will just count as "1-of-82 games" required for the regular season. There's absolutely 0 reason to not like the in-season-tournament, other than the name but that's a work in progress 🤣
Oh Americans. The EASY analogy is the Cup competition/League in European soccer. Everyone’s PRIMARY GOAL is to win the league/championship. But by winning the cup/in-season tournament also come added bragging rights, awards, prestige, financial bonuses, etc. Winning either of the completions would be considered a trophy. But the OVERWHELMING importance is placed on the league/championship than the cup/in season tournament. Typically clubs use their younger inexperienced players in Cup matches as to get them playing time. Because most won’t make an appearance in a league game unless they’re really good.
The in season tournament looks Silver is incorporating elements of European football, soccer, into the NBA with pool play and knockout rounds. Like how they have the Champions League tournament games during the same time as the English Premiere League (EPL). The advantage of the European football tournaments is that you are getting the top teams in different leagues that would never play each other as part of their own league championships, EPL and Bundesliga for example. The NBA already has this as part of the post season conference. I think a more interesting tournament would be to get a champions league style tournament with the top 2 or 3 teams from other top basketball countries to play against each other. That would be incredible if that happened yearly or every other year.
this is what I hope was one of the objectives of the in-season tournament, besides getting more eyes-on earlier in the season. If the NBA cup is a success, maybe it would be a catalyst for NBA teams taking on the best of Europe (Real, Barca, Olympiacos) in a competitive tournament.
Change the award (prize) for the In-season tournament winner and runner up, and it will mean more to everyone. Don't offer money, offer them the option to select the first round seed they match against in the playoffs (if they make it)
It's really not rocket science teams in the groups are playing to determine if they make the knockout rounds, knockout rounds are sudden death similar to the NCAA tournament and that crowns an in season champ Lol, very simple and a great way to fill the modern void that has become the NBA regular season.
at the end of the day the games also count overall towards playoff seeding so its basically still regular season games, but teams are incentivized for the first time ever to take the first half of the season seriously, if you watched the games thus far you'll easily see that the atmosphere has been playoff-like which is a win for the fans.
The sole reason why they do this is to give one of the rebuilding teams or ones who don’t win championships something to hang their hat on. A trophy to put in the practice facility to say they won something, so that the nba can’t tell the team, “hey u had 40 years as a team and didn’t win anything”.
The nba needs to push back against ring culture if they want basketball to be more intertaining in November. It use to be that championships were a team accomplishment and stuff like all-star appearances, scoring titles, and all nba team selections had about as big of an impact when it came assessing a player's greatness. Now we have loud management, lackluster play early in the year, and players phoneing it in on all-star weekend. All because championships are the only thing that matters so it's pointless to try until you get closer to the playoffs
Man... Stephen curry pretty much explained what the in tournament is its very simple stuff. I wish TNT could've gotten the video of Steph curry explaining the in season tournament
As european,i think better version of this in-season tournament is Spain ACB league version...basically in ACB season is 34 games..so after 17 games best 8 teams qualifies to Main event..so in my opinion in NBA after 41 games top 4 western conference and top 4 eastern conference teams qualifies for main event, and go to Vegas..western 1 seed plays eastern 4 seed(one game knockout) and so on...so you get top level competition and teams will play harder to qualify as top 4 in they conference
In football (soccer), we have multiple trophies throughout the year, and it's great. I'm surprised though that they didn't just have the conference winners play each other for a regular season trophy, before the play-offs. It would add more value to the MVP trophy too.
Yeah but it's more interesting depending on the tournament or league you're either playing teams from other divisions or top teams from other countries on a club level.
I think its stupid, the NBA need stop trying to fix things that aren't broken, they already added the play-in, giving teams that didn't do enough during the traditional regular season to make the playoffs a chance to knock off the teams that actually did enough in 82 games, a lot of this feels very orange slice-y
The regular season is broken. Players don’t take it seriously. Fans don’t take it seriously. Even the teams don’t take it seriously. So there has to be a way to make it more interesting.
As a European football fan I think this a no brainer for the nba, bringing something like an fa cup to the game makes the regular season less stale and allows teams to get something for there hard work and an acknowledgment that there going In the right direction.
Except the Premier League doesn't have a knockout competition. The NBA already has the playoffs. It's just a mini version of the playoffs, it will always inherently be meaningless.
Nba is different to premier league... league leading to knockouts instead of league with standings effecting next season with cups in-betweenm 38 game season vs 83 for nba.
If the reason is to bring more attention to the NBA season during a period of low viewership, I can understand that.. However, I'm not on board if the reason is to try to entice players to play games and not load manage. They're already getting paid big bucks. Why should they be paid more and given more awards to get them to do the job their paid to do already?
The tournament is good, and better than just a regular game which is all you get all year round until the playoffs...and the games still count as regular season games. I think it's a win / win. Just don't use the word 'Champion'
If I’m the nba I’ll designate the winner of the in season tournament at least a play in playoff spot. So if they end the season outside of the playoffs, they will automatically get that last spot… which gives the teams an incentive to win… if they end the season in playoff standings then there will be no effect.

the OKC court really is nice

The NBA can sweeten the pot for future IST's for the teams themselves. Here is what I think:
IST Champ
-20% Salary Bonus for the squad list in their final IST game paid for by the NBA
-Team gets +$5M added to their Salary Cap for the next season.
IST Runner Up
-10% Salary Bonus for the squad list in their final IST game paid for by the NBA
-Team gets +$3M added to their Salary Cap for the next season
Losing Semifinalists
-5% Salary Bonus for the squad list in their final IST game paid for by the NBA
-Team gets +$1M added to their Salary Cap for the next season
Rest of the teams that qualify for the IST Playoffs
-Team gets +$500K added to their Salary Cap for the next season.
“He suck in College” Chuck 😂😂
In soccer if you win a treble it’s a memorable season that will go down in the teams history, if this tournament picks up traction winning both the finals and the tourney could be something that could boost a franchises legacy
As a fan of both European Soccer and Basketball, this tournament may seem weird at first, but when this gains traction, we might get some good NBA nights
NBA saw people don't care about regular season anymore, players nor fans. This is good try to make it more competitive.
Haven't even watched the video yet, but I'll take a guess: Shaq and Chuck don't like the idea, Kenny loves it....
As a fan I don’t care about the in season at all. This is like having a summer league champion.
Anyone who doesn't get it I seriously question their comprehension skills. The tournament starts off with groups (each conference) then the 8 teams left after the Group Play will face off until the finals. There's literally NOTHING more to it.
Nobody remembers the final four. They remember the champs. "If ur not 1st, ur last" -Ricky Bobby
Players on a team that loses in the quarterfinals: $50,000
Players on a team that loses in the semifinals: $100,000
Players on a team that loses in the championship: $200,000
Players on a team that wins the championship: $500,000
I think it's good to keeping these guys from doing low management, also like chuck said, the floors are great.
In season tournament is good for the fans but hopefully the players enjoy it and $500k ain’t bad for the winners
The rookie and role players would love the 500k idk about the super star players
@@stevenmark4407 star players could care less about 500k when they're getting paid 150+ million lol
@@TheNiggaReview to be fair a good leader should put in the work for his guys to get some extra money
Shaq abd Chuck painfully trying to hold their laughs in at the beginning
I was in Anchorage and saw NC win the Great Alaska Soot Out that year.
Highschool and college sports have tournaments and they're important
I thought I would hate it as a purist and lifelong NBA fan, but it’s growing on me.
Boring wasn't a problem in the 90's NBA this NBA needs more help help like Bron
European soccer is like Oprah:
You get a trophy
You get a trophy
You get a trophy
Everyone look under your seat!!!

But it’s just me, a dumb North American

@@jogendron6320 Uhh, no, it's really not like that at all. You clearly don't watch or follow and are just babbling for no reason.
I feel like Shaq and Chuck saying they don’t really care about in-season tournaments, they would roast a current player if they said the same thing.
Appreciate Adam Silver for trying to fix the regular season but this ain’t it lol
Phony money grab. You can’t manufacture a competition like this- it’s awkwardly squeezed in, difficult to understand, and meaningless compared to the season trophy.
Shaq looking at Chuck waiting for him to laugh 😅
The problem is then all the previous seasons of the NBA and the records and the stats don't mean as much as they do now. It disrupts the integrity in the history of the game.
Yeah, I'm with Shaq on it too. It's All about that Big Championship at the end. But it is what it is.
The comparison is to soccer which has random mid season cups- multi league, foreign, CL etc
I honestly don't understand any NBA fans that are upset about this. All of these games (except the final) would be regular season games these teams have to play regardless so if this add an extra competitive incentive those games I can't see how that's a bad thing.
Me neither. It's gonna be fun to watch.
That would be incredible if that happened yearly or every other year.
yeah, but they won't want to join it.
this is what I hope was one of the objectives of the in-season tournament, besides getting more eyes-on earlier in the season. If the NBA cup is a success, maybe it would be a catalyst for NBA teams taking on the best of Europe (Real, Barca, Olympiacos) in a competitive tournament.
Change the award (prize) for the In-season tournament winner and runner up, and it will mean more to everyone. Don't offer money, offer them the option to select the first round seed they match against in the playoffs (if they make it)
I think the winner should get home court advantage in first round or play in tournament, whicheber comes first
1:46 you can hear in Shaq’s voice his disappointment (still!) in not getting a Final Four. That’s the true champion mentality
As european,i think better version of this in-season tournament is Spain ACB league version...basically in ACB season is 34 games..so after 17 games best 8 teams qualifies to Main event..so in my opinion in NBA after 41 games top 4 western conference and top 4 eastern conference teams qualifies for main event, and go to Vegas..western 1 seed plays eastern 4 seed(one game knockout) and so on...so you get top level competition and teams will play harder to qualify as top 4 in they conference
the courts definitely helped catch some looks.
Soccer is an inferior sport that nobody cares about. The NBA will fail with this meaningless tournament
In season tournament cup could be a big thing in the future.

You and me both shaq, you and me both
Agreed the NBA did a terrible job explaining it.
I think I speak for majority of NBA fans AND players when I say "WHO CARES....?"
They need to bring back the ABA Ball.
As a European football fan I think this a no brainer for the nba, bringing something like an fa cup to the game makes the regular season less stale and allows teams to get something for there hard work and an acknowledgment that there going In the right direction.
I agree
Except the Premier League doesn't have a knockout competition. The NBA already has the playoffs. It's just a mini version of the playoffs, it will always inherently be meaningless.
Nba is different to premier league... league leading to knockouts instead of league with standings effecting next season with cups in-betweenm 38 game season vs 83 for nba.
Shaq slimmed down.
Harden is the all time regular season champion 🏆😂😂
I don't care about it yet either but I'm willing to be slowly pulled into the hype. The courts are ... amusing lol
Orlando Magic will win this tournament! MARK IT DOWN
Shoutout to the Great Alaska Shootout !
"HOW MANY RINGS CHUCK?!!!"
The wackiest thing done to make players compete
And they're still not competing 😂
@@AggravatedMan365 facts 😂😭
I don't think people will really care until the knockout games happen. It's gonna be like an NBA elite 8.
If I’m the nba I’ll designate the winner of the in season tournament at least a play in playoff spot. So if they end the season outside of the playoffs, they will automatically get that last spot… which gives the teams an incentive to win… if they end the season in playoff standings then there will be no effect.
It’s definitely smart because most of these players are only in college two years now.
I’ve never agreed with Shaq more than rn. They can go to Vegas anytime 😂
2:55 com'on, you can't tell me he isn't bs'ing here.
they probably told them to not say anything negative about the court designs, I imagine.

I wish that the tournament was continuous instead of starting and stopping. If it wasn't for the courts, I wouldn't know when they playing tournament games.
2:28 you have a problem calling it a championship, but no problem calling a national championship "world championship"?
