I have had a quick charger to do just this since I got the car. I have done it to my last 2 cars, and I have only left it so long because I thought I might need to take the centre console out. Thank you 😌👍
Yeah very true. Tbh, everytime I've needed to check my pressures or add a bit of air, I always end up going to a nearby garage. The wee electric pump in the boot was never getting used. Some newer ones run off usb nowadays too.
Yeah, you'd have a few options - You could cut the plug end that's on the cars wiring and solder the wires to it, or better would be to add a couple of spade connectors to the cars wiring and plug them onto the usb socket. Or lastly if you found even just 2 small bits of wire, and 4 spade connectors, use that to connect the usb to the cars original plug to save cutting it off. Really depends what you have to hand to help fit it, and if you ever think you'll reconnect the old 12v socket again. Hope that helps 👍🏻
Good video but assuming someone like me don’t have the electrical knowledge kinda disappointing not to see how you connected to the OEM it will be great if you can add it or explain it on the description.
Hey there, yep massive mistake by me to have missed out the key part of that. I'm fitting one to my project car soon, so will cover it in a lot more detail for that one, and also in the same video, include a look back at the Leon original connector to show everyone how I did it. I think I have a few pictures of it, so if u find me on Instagram or Facebook, DM me and I can send them through to you 👍🏻
Hey Billy , cheers for the kind words. Yeah I have a picture of the way I connected it. If you get in touch with me via my Instagram or Facebook page, I can send u the picture 👍🏻
I do have an account but hardly ever use it. I'll try to describe the connection as best as possible - So on the cars wiring, it's a 3 socket white connector, I've connected the following wires.. Brown on car > black/red on usb Black/red on car > Red on usb Grey on car > not required The brown from the car is the live wire, switches from 0 to 14 volts when the ignition goes on. I just had connectors on the end of the usb wires and pushed them into the original white multiplug socket. Hope that makes sense
Tried this on my 2015 Mazda 3 which has a 12v charger. I replaced it with the QC adapter and to my surprise - no power. I connected multimeter, set to 20dc and get no voltage. I know my lighter worked cause I had a regular dual USB adapter in there. Don't know why suddenly would stop working. Also checked fuses inside the car and on the one that comes with the QC adapter and they're good. Don't understand what happened when hoping for a quick and easy installation
I'm not sure what has happened there. Something must have been disrupted when fitting the replacement QC adapter. Are u able to plug back in the old 12v lighter socket and see if that still works? Though I suppose if you're getting no voltage at all at the wires it must be something to do with the car. Hopefully you can track down the issue 🤞🏻
I changed the ends of the wire that comes with the USB plug, to spade connectors, and just pushed them both over the connectors that are on the standard 12v multiplug. The black insulation tape was just to hold it all in place afterwards.
No probs! Probably something I should have included in the video 🙈, my bad!! I'll add a wee bit in the description, so appreciate you asking to bring it to my attention 👍🏻
On my leon the usb charger is awful, sometimes even when its on charge the battery goes down. I would do what youve done but dont want to lose the socket. I wonder if it is possible to change the inverter that powers the usb socket to a more powerful one.
If it's the same usb that I have, in the wee cubby at the front, I think it runs off the power off just the headunit, so I'm not sure if you can get the headunit to put more amps through that connection. You could maybe run a feed off the original 12v socket, from in behind the connector, and run the wires to up inside the glove box, and mount a separate usb fast charge there maybe?
Maybe someone has asked the question on Google already. If it is only able to be a low power from out of the headunit, the fast charge usb would be hidden away and still tuftif tucked in the glove box for a final option. See how u get on 👍🏻
I took the original 12 v socket out qnd saw 3 cables, 2 of them must be the 12v and ground. You know what the small cable for is? And do i have to connect it?
The brown wire on the car is the switchable 12volts when the ignition is on, so that needs connected to the '+' terminal of the usb. The red black wire on the car is the ground so this will be connected to the ' - ' on the car. The grey wire on the car I think is for the original sockets illumination, but the new usb socket illuminates with just the 2 wires connected, so u don't connect the grey wire to anything 👍🏻
I hadn't shown a definitive way to connect it as everyone has a different preference to how they wire it up I'm afraid. Some cut all connections off, and solder all the wires. Some cut all the connections and just wrap the wires together. Some cut all the connections and fit male/female connectors. I just added 2 spade connections from eBay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253180426877?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=YRTmJau9QrW&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=vCDiAaHLTtq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY and it meant I could always put the old 12v socket back if required 👍🏻
@NorthCoastWorkshop I don't know where to put the crimp terminals in the original cigarette lighter how you mentioned in the video. Can I know the easiest way to do this?
@@NorthCoastWorkshop hi I ordered the exact same one using that link and I've fit it on it works but when I take engine off and start the car again it doesn't work at all I have to keep opening the case and pull out the positive wires again and clip it on then blue light comes on until I switch engine off it works sometimes and sometimes blue light flashes and turns off what can the problem be pls
@@raheemmohammed4841 sounds like the unit is faulty, I would return it for a new one, it shouldn't do that, and it should just come on and off with the ignition if connected to the original 12v socket wires.
I'd say whatever came in the original package, I would return all of those contents, otherwise they won't send out a replacement if parts are missing from the faulty unit.
I've just slipped spade connectors over the original connection for the 12v socket, so it's still there if needed to go back in. A spare centre trim is about £5-10 too. I used to have a plug in adapter, but it stuck out a bit, sometimes got knocked and had to wiggle it back in to make sure it was on. Since I never use 12v cig plugs anymore, I opted for this setup so it's not as messy. The video was just to show the process if someone fancied doing the same thing. But yeah, nothing wrong with the plug in adapters instead if that's preferred 👍🏻

Great idea! But doesn't the tyre inflation pump plug into the cig charger?

Is the extra wiring a must? I’ve just bought the fast charge socket but without the wiring would I still be able to connect it?
