Several months ago I had an afternoon tea there and it was altogether, a somewhat underwhelming experience. The afternoon tea could have been much better and the building itself lacks patina, in my opinion. What was very good indeed, was the service: IMPECCABLE!
Ritz used to be my favorite place to stay in Madrid due to it's wonderful staff and old world charm. Unfortunately it lost a lot of it's charm after the renovation. Still beautiful hotel but not anymore charming historic palace as it used to be.
I was thinking that might be the case. You don’t need the latest “everything” to create genuine luxury though to be fair it appears that the renovation has overall respected the hotel’s heritage.
