When she gives birth, she pushes out the new spirit into the world. So there is a blood and spiritual bond between mother and child. In adoption of a child, a parent doesn’t have that spiritual blood bond with the child, only a namesake claim. So technically she is not a mother.

Here, Sabrina's mother is claiming that she had both infernal (Lucifer) and heavenly (Saint Lucy) figures backing her up for the task of protecting the baby.

Heaven as the domain of the Angels, Saints, The Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God; and Hell as the domain of the abisal and dark creatures such as demons, fallen angels, the hell aristocracy and Lucifer, The Morningstar Fallen Angel, the Satan, ruler of Hell.

The fact Zelda immediately let go of the baby when she was crying in pain and fear and how she made the hard choice to give the baby away at the end of the ep to a safer home shows she was a better mother from the start. A true mother (which is determined by love, not by blood) would do anything for the wellbeing of their children even if its a sacrifice to the mother herself
Same goes to fathers too
This scene makes you wonder how far down the path of night Diana really went down with Edward. It would be nice to have a flashback scene of them younger.

I want to see more flashbacks with Edward and Diana - I want to know if Edward Spellman only started working to reform the Church of Night into something more open and progressive after he met Diana or if he was always more open-minded than the whole of the coven put together.
The one thing I didn't like about this episode is that it showed Zelda was 100% mom material but she gave up the baby in the end

In short, Sabrina is her mother's daughter through and through. THIS is a very good thing for her and her family, not so much for anyone trying to mess with the Spellman family OR the coven at large.
Gryla is a Jynx a witch that brings bad luck everywhere she goes

Zelda had a deep desire to be a mother, she is the mother of Sabrina and Ambrose, yes, but she raised them like an aunt, she really wanted to be a mother in all aspects of the word and it couldn't be, it's so sad, life of Zelda seems so unfortunate to me. 😭😭💔
Now that Gryla is in league with the Spellmans and the newly formed Order of Hecate, I hope Gryla is a bit smarter with her yule lads. Had she pushed too far here I have a feeling either Hilda (most likely) or Zelda would've done something more.... permanent to handle the issue.
Funny. People are commenting on where the idea of deciding on who gets the baby originally came from, but this is actually a biblical story where the true mother steps back to save her child.
It probably shares the same structure with other tales from other sources.... And the Bible got it from the Torah...

Yep it is a christmas special episode released in december but it also counts as the first episode of season 2 which is why season 2 only has 9 episodes instead of 10 ^^

What I didn't like was that Gryla was allowed to take the baby because Zelda didn't want to hurt her. I mean the whole point of that test is that the true mother wouldn't want harm to come to the child. I know it was a trick and everything but it just made me mad. Clearly Zelda is the better mother and maybe she has not had children but she raises sabrina and ambrose and teaches them right from wrong. That is what a mother does. Part of the reason I don't like this holiday special.

that was the point. this was essentially king Solomon's process. his was to split a child in half, and give each mother fighting for it, half the child. one mother refused to harm the child, so thus she won. by refusing to harm the child, Zelda proved herself to be the better mother, and thus won the baby.
