thinking on your own is very important, similar to how learning to solve problems is important but not memorizing solutions of 100s of problems. Most philosophers write a lot of good for nothing verbiage and perhaps in their whole life they make half a statement valid (not even one valid full statement:-)). But they tried to think on their own, that is what separates them from common man. You can read all the philosophers, starting from Upanishads, which are guru of all philosophers to the latest Quantum Physicists and Neuro-scientists (these two fields create the most scientific philosophers, because these two fields are top end in science yet very mysterious, but compared to Sartre etc, these guys, for example, Schrodinger, will not do plain bluffing, they will base their ideas on much better defined and realistic, mostly scientific terms).
But even if you just memorize or read or hear all that philosophy you end up learning nothing MEANINGFUL, you have to learn HOW TO QUESTION, HOW TO THINK ON YOUR OWN, HOW TO QUESTION EVERY PHILOSOPHER, can you? every guru? questioning doesn't mean you are saying they are wrong, questioning means you can pierce through their thinking. Instead of getting 100 paragraphs on 100 philosophers get just 10 lines on one of them from this guy and THEN QUESTION, THEN DISECT ALL THE REASONING FIND ALL THE GAPS.. if you can, you are philosopher too, perhaps you won't get name, because this is not the time where Sartre type person can get much recognition, but your own mind will tell you whether you can now think philosophically/reasonably or not.

There are two types of beings- one who read/hear all kind of knowledge but don't think on their own, the other who can think on their own:-)
