Well at least it has a seperate motor for each deck - a lot of the dual cassette units we got here in the UK from the late 80's onwards, the dual cassette mechanism was a single part with a centrally-mounted motor driving both decks via long belts (which were about as reliable as you would guess they would be)
Yeah, Technics basically had the same mechanism in every deck at this time, so you could even use parts of this deck for higher end models... For sure there are some minor differences, but the base is mostly the same.
I have many cassette decks that have hours of time invested in them only to find a failure that was unexpected and had to bail. The Nakamichi CR7 that I bought for $100 got sold back for $100. Found out way too many miles on it and the heads were damaged. Nakamichi BX-125 I got working putting in a new tire only to find out the playback head is so worn the channel closest to the edge of the tape drops out in volume. You really have to look over the parts you can't get really good before you invest in the obvious belts, cleaning, alignment, your time, your aggravation. I have one of those Pioneer 6 cassette changers apart and trying to get it working, those are a trip.
I have a cheapy Kenwood 103CT almost the same built as this deck, built around the same time. It has exactly the same problem. I've been trying to fix it and could not get it to work. I did check the pinch rollers and it was the same condition as this one so that's why it wouldn't play. I didn't mind the crappiness but it was fun tinkering around with it. Thanks for showing this to us.
Interesting video. I stumbled across this looking for possible solutions to a skipping technic cd deck. I bought a cheap hifi from ebay just to play old tapes and cds on. Its an eh760 by technics. The twin tape deck is the same as this or very similar. Having watched your video i noticed the capstans were rusty on mine but the pinch rollers look new. It plays fine though and ive cleaned up any oxidation now. Given its over two decades old, its in fair condition for junk.
I have a Technics dual cassette deck from 1986 , that still works perfectly fine and it still has the original belts. I guess around the time that this tape deck shown here was manufactured, ( 90's ) the build quality pretty much went to crap...smh
Still like your video on this Technics model. You have a great sense of tech humour! I followed the entire video since I have this same deck. Thank you for doing this!
I've got the TR 474 which has manual record volume and balance control. Brought it second hand and so far is a good machine, better than the Sony double deck I've got, which is younger than the Technics.
@@DaXande135 unfortunately there isn't much choice when it comes to buying tape decks, so when I see something that could be good, I buy it. Do you know if most pich rollers are similar if I find any from a different brand or model of tape deck? Or do I have to go for replacement rollers of the same model?

People pay me to fix this garbage and RUclips pays me when you watch. I like the money. I do this to teach others how to maintain this old "garbage" as you call it.
You can instantly tell it's crap (at least was crap in the 90's - in comparison with new devices it noe can be seen as high end ;)) because of the missing Record Level control and tape calibration which then already was a basic feature.
I have a version of this mech in an RS-CH404 Midi component, and that smaller belt behind the arm is actually gear driven, and the gears break. Had to buy remanufactured ones on ebay. But on mine you HAVE to desolder the rear pcb to Change the main belt
Entry level twin decks are rarely any good, and no fun to try and repair. I find if you want a good copy, use 2 seperate good quality decks. At least this "garbage" kept us in work for a few years. Now it passes the time away.

In my 51 years of life so far I can honestly say I've never seen a component cassette deck with no record level adjustment. Until just now. Ridiculous.
It is basically a boombox in a component deck body. On another hand, the mechanism itself and the head reversing still work. Maybe if the pinch rollers along with their axles were replaced, it would work. I have a TR333, which is a step-up I guess, it has manual level control. But a plastic gear on the right deck is broken - a common problem.
I own a Panasonic cobra-boombox from the same era. The tape mechanisms are identical. I managed to source new belts and rollers. my reaction, whe removing the old detoriated rollers, was the same 😀
Funny that the higher deck in the range has nice metal flywheels instead of plastic. On the TR-333 unit. It also has bias control and record-level control.
Minutes out of your life you will never get back! These were an embarrassment for Technics. These were sold as all in one systems with a pro logic Dolby 5.1 surround system, CD disk changer, double cassette deck, the cheapest press board speakers that looked impressive, but all show and no go. My parents still have their system down in the basement in storage. $700 for the entire system from Future Shop back in the 90's. Panasonic was better than this, and they were supposed to be beneath Technics.
The Technics brand was slowly cut down in the early 2000s and completely retreated in 2002, except for the 1200 DJ turntable wich was cancelled in 2010. So devices from that era aren't their best. The brand was revived in 2016 as a high-end label, quite dissimilar from its 80s/90s range.
I have never had any luck with anything made by Panasonic. The cheap dual well decks had the worst speed regulation of any deck I have worked on. The best thing they ever made was the Technics SL1200 MKII.

It's a high quality made cassette deck and repair friendly! Look at the plastic flywheel and trash plus you must desolder the motor on deck two to get to the belts. Easy friendly design to work on and lots of high quality plastic. NO RECORD LEVEL CONTROL OR HEADPHONE JACK!!!!!

Oh, and I think I have seen those pinch roller problems somewhere on RUclips already, I think it was on a Technics RS-AZ that use the same pinch rollers. I have a twin deck with this same pinch roller system, but they are totally fine, also the original belts.
I'd love have a cassette deck like this for next to nothing. Anyone who's had to do for example with a Sony in the WE series can only appreciate how nice this deck is, the WE series from SONY is way weaker than this one: the doors even in top models get twisted by trying to close them from the sides and can get out of their pegs, even the Dolby and rely buttons don't work properly, they won't budge... when they do they completely flip sides, and they have the dreaded (but absolutely fine) monoblock mechanism. Not only I am ready to bet this has a very decent head (salvageable) but it's a nice bottom range entry level unit of the late 90s with Dolby B/C and HXPro. The eject is electronic, the doors don't flex, the buttons are easy and pleasing to operate. ARL is not the end of this world and it was probably the best single option suited for a deck like this. Would I waste my nice RS-B11W to rewind a tape... mmmhh, no. Would I use the cue function of of my RS-M202 to locate a track on a random tape... I don't believe so, I need a machine like this. Pinch rollers? Oh yes, give me lots of them! They're just 5 bucks for a 10 pack these days. Still... I came here to see if he used a hammer. I must admit: I am disappointed.
Sorry Dave, I ain't 'avin it...The correct pronounciation of your Photon quote was "wears me 'amma". It's a shame he's not uploaded again for a while, this looks a worthy candidate for a few Kv up it's jacks.
Too bad, co i think that stereo deck in good condition, just small repair will make it work again. Btw, there no bearing on that pinch roller, the white part is glued to the rubber roller.
What good is that? Hxpro was just a means to extend the high end response that worked by reducing the bias during high frequency recording just as cymbal crash ect. The thinking is the high frequency sound added to the bias would over bias the tape sl modulating the bias in response to high frequency content would improve it. It does nothing else so saving the jx circuit doesn't really do you any good.
@@12voltvids Yeah, the mid-late '90s was when the Quality of Technics Cassette decks started to go down the toilet. Most of the early '90s High-End Technics models had Dolby-HX Pro, and they were built better and pretty descent machines!

Technics went to total shite in the late ‘80s. I had a Technics receiver with one of those remote controlled volume dials that died after just 5 years or so. I replaced it with a JVC unit circa ‘96 that didn’t sound as good but at least worked (JVC pretty much abandoned home audio not long after). Technics still had decent case designs right thru to the end, but they stopped being quality equipment after ‘88 or so. Avoid.
@@sunspot42 i've never liked anything remote, it usually fails and you end up with a disabled/unusable system. Most of the late Technics are really BS, every one I tried to repair ended up like this one, usually broken gear.. plastic is cheapest ever on these models...

wow this tape player is a big letdown lol I guess by the late 80s technics was running outta finances one of most sorry technics machine I've even seen really auto rec level control empty box !! it's cool and funny to hear your review on this Pyle of junk !!!
Well, it's just their lowest end of the entry level cassette decks, they still had many machines with auto tape cal., 3 heads and Quartz Locked DD... Also the higher ended dual well decks in some cases had manual bias, ATC calobration and so on... And my own dual well deck from technics still runs like on its first day, luckily
They were all designed that way. The ONLY reason that partsband service data was available was because the consumer protection arm of governments forced the manufactures to make repair parts available to service the equipment they made. Initially it was 10 years. In the mid 80s the us government dropped that requirement to 7 which Canada followed. Then around 1990 it dropped to 6 and then by 95 it was 4 after the model went out of production. By the year 2000 it was completely dropped because manufactures agreed to replace equipment that failed under warranty and once a unit went out of production specific parts it used also ended. Once the inventory was gone that was it. They did however allow 3rd party manufactures to make things like belts and pulleys, gears ect and that's why we can still get the blue gear for Sony VHS. As long as there is a market the company making that part will produce it. Once the sales dry up which they probably have by now they will just end production of that part too.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-m-gosh!! Hey why just simply 3d print........yeah nevermind-LOL!!! It's really a shame to see all the engineering that went into manufacturing that thing go to the landfill. I've got one of those decks, had it since new, and it wasn't the model I ordered. I've had to replace the pinch rollers on that one too, those Technics parts are just crap. Mine now only gets used occasionally to play back tapes for re-recording into the PC, and for that it works. Mine is a low hours deck, it had a problem when new (under warranty) and that was fixed, but it failed later, and I only fixed it about 4 years ago, and whatever was used to clean the thing became corrosive and damaged the capstans and caused rust on the steel part of the chassis. I have since come by an RS-TR575 mk2 deck which looks like a better deck but that one still has those crappy pinch rollers that have now fallen completely apart. 5 years ago I could get the pinch roller cheaply enough, now any replacements are very expensive on Ebay from who knows where.
SAVING THIS FOR NEXT YEAR
BECAUSE IM REVIEWING THE TECHNICS SCD NEXT YEAR
I'm glad I'm only out 2 dollars and about 5 hours before I found out how cheezy these are. Guess I'll just save the board for the HX Pro thru.
Technics Decks from the Early-90s are better built than these later ones!
Wasn't everything?
@@12voltvids Yeah, the mid-late '90s was when the Quality of Technics Cassette decks started to go down the toilet. Most of the early '90s High-End Technics models had Dolby-HX Pro, and they were built better and pretty descent machines!
@@dennisthebrony2022 the decline started on early 90s.
One of the best cassette decks ever made was the JVC TDV1010.
That deck as for 1400 here and as it was costly not many bought it but those that one one can tell you how good it it. I happen to own one so I know how good this one is. If only it had dbx.
Worst mechanism ever, when you said my assistant used to whine, i was laughing because i have opened my Panasonic SU CH40 like three times to fix this crappy mechanism. Love from Pakistan.
Can you get new pitch rollers do they cost a lot
Probably not for this piece of crap.
That looks hard to fix
Size belt plis sir?
Don't know sorry. Have to measure like I do when i need one.
I have The Technics RS-TR 373m2 Deck 2 Need to change new Belt allready i have it But Do not start Yet Looks very Complicat to Open it
I have 2 of those and yes it’s trash but one of them and idk if it’s normal but the transistors heats up and same goes for uh I think tape 1 chip
Dolby NR and no way to set the level. Oh, the irony.
The Techics are Bradley build
Crap would be an under statement. but the motors have a chance to be usable.
Im really supprised technics made it.
Maybe there name was plastered on to some cheap unknown crap.
I stick to the old tech, all controls are real switches and variable controls are real potentiometers. (Better the devil you know).
Stepped volume levels are bloody annoying too.
Dam dont i moan lol.
Most of the late Technics are really BS, every one I tried to repair ended up like this one, usually broken gear.. plastic is cheapest ever on these models...
Techics Rest R Double Cassette deck is cool
Cassette deck is pice of Junk
A Sony is a good brand for a doubieb Cassette
Does anyone know much about the technics rs tr777 cassette deck 🤔 I have the technics rs tr777 cassette deck model 🤔 if anyone knows about this technics cassette deck 🤔
Wow what a piece of junk !
Great video .
Thank god for hard drives
PS: You likely could have been a good dental technician too!
A YAMARA is a good brand name
This is fubar deck, and I have many other decks, that not design to fix... But like you say, parts are good to be.
is it safe to say that this was the definition of it works but that's about all it does?
Bad product and possibly frozen at one time.? Because it's plastic it doesn't show weathered condition .That's a guess on my part. I could see 2 rollers going bad.But all 4 shows me a fate worse than bad parts.Even junk kept in a controlled environment decays unevenly. This was kept in a
bad place for storage? I kept components in my unheated storage building during winter months and the rubber turned to dust? Sorry it ended badly.Your intent was good. Still good Video showing how nasty a product can be.
It was in a house.
@@12voltvids Thanks
it was built only to last a certain amount of time and that was it, I guess they figured if it last five or ten years you got your money's worth
3 years.
Worst deck I don belts on was a Kenwood twin deck 4030 or 4050 awful thing to work on .seen a few of the expensive Panasonic's with gear faults the DD models are often faulty.
I think that it doesn't need this level of disasembly.
I don't wish to invest further in casaettes--for some reason, interest is resurrected.
No way $500+ for a new "audiophile" one--Pyle is about $250. No way....
Cassette decks have been obsolete for 40 years. Today they are toys or reminders on how bad they sounded.
There were a few really really good tape decks. I have 2. Jvc tdv1010 and technics rsm275 and 2 of the better ones. Nakamichi were over rated.
probably a rack system model.
Package of 5 pinch rollers out of aliexpress is less than 10 bucks.
Plus 48.00 broker fee
@@12voltvids never been charged any fees from aliexpress to Canada
Wow that thing is pure junk?
Technics makes high end crap made with the highest quality.
holly crap
wow this tape player is a big letdown lol I guess by the late 80s technics was running outta finances one of most sorry technics machine I've even seen really auto rec level control empty box !! it's cool and funny to hear your review on this Pyle of junk !!!
Just save the usable parts !! .😆
You could never make a living fixing this crap. You would lose your shirt just looking at it.
Why do you think I got out of the business in 2003?
@@12voltvids sad they took advantage of the technics name.
Whispering "garbage" in reverse eh?
Hahaha.
That technics deck was throw away when it was new very cheap never ment to get repaired 😂
Pull the belts/motors, take your finest Tanya Harding tool, and give it what it deserves and feel good about it!!!!!!!!!
on az7 i dissoldered motor tooo
They have the same on Panasonic's. It was a very cost effective apporach. That time, Matsushita was the VAG (Volkswagen) of audio industry. 😉
I think I hear someone whisper stuff in backwards into my ears. I should seek medical attention. 🤣😂
Subliminal messages.
Too bad i am too far from you, i could take what's left from the deck after you salvage the motors
You can have it
@@12voltvids :D When it comes to me it will cost as much as small used car, i am on the other side of the globe ;)
Nice bit of reverse speech
Garbage
Guess what, these were used for copying computer games, the only purpose it had
most technics (TEAC) cassette decks were crap Technics good with turntables but with cassette decks really crap
Technics is a Panasonic brand (Matsushita in the 90's). It has nothing to do with Teac.
Totally different companies. Technics is Panasonic. Tascam and teac same company.
@@12voltvids oh yes you are right my mistake
That 575 looks like a high hours deck, at least I have the pinch rollers and belts, but is it worth it?
If you are nostalgic, it is. 😊
oil on the belt ,that ask for difficults !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Almost an embarrassment? Lol!
Almost?
Wow. Junk.
Junk!! 🙄
dont laugh thay used to sound great when new.
2.17% wf
Only the AZ series.
The Techics sucks
This one does. They did make some good units though.
@@12voltvids Yeah their stuff back in the 70s thru the mid ‘80s was generally high quality. Then Panasonic cashed in on the name, released a flood of Technics branded junk that would have embarrassed Sanyo, and ran the brand into the toilet.
