Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels - World 9

This and finding the hidden room in Adventure for the Atari 2600 was so exciting back then.
I didn't know about the difference with the FDS version though.

Ya
Meh she ight
I remember doing this quite a bit back in the day by mistake. I thought I was going crazy but was able to figure out how I did it so my friends would believe it at school lol
I never could get it to work while crouching, I always did the reverse jump technique. Never figured out why I couldn't do it crouching :D

The minus world isn't the biggest mystery in gaming. 0:11 No one has ever figured out why Mario is jumping headfirst into a brick wall before falling into a lava pit while throwing a fireball at said wall.
I'm surprised no one has asked Miyamoto about it, though I doubt he'd know much about american cover art.
One thing that’s been on my mind for decades is, does Mario eat the mushrooms?
For the fact he is a plumber and thinks he can save a princess, I’m pretty sure he consumes (magic) mushrooms…🤪
I thought I hadn't done too many drugs tonight? But here we are.
No one called it Super Mario Bros. Back in the day. We knew that Bros. is short for Brothers. So that what we called it Super Mario Brothers. People under 40 always always get it wrong.
Agreed. There's a reason it's printed with a period at the end. It's abbreviation.
Found out about the minus world back in 1991.
I remember clearly the rumors of the secret hidden chocolate world or the beanstalk on world 1-1.
Of course we didn't have internet back then. So urban myths and gaming rumors plagued our lives.
The Princess was originally named Princess Toadstool in the North American and European releases.
"Thank You Mario, But our Princess' name is Toadstool back in the day"
Love your work. Brinks back good memories and that nostalgic feeling......
I thought the thumbnail is from a creepypasta mario game.
We used this trick back in the late '80's.
-no need to crouch.
Never knew the part about not letting the final wall appear.
I'm sure Lady Decade will probably explain this in the follow up video delving deeper into these fascinating "minus worlds" (which is really a nonsense term for them), but the reason why 36 shows up as a blank space is because of the way numbers are displayed. It uses numbers 0-9, then A-Z. So if you were to access world 10-1 for example, it will appear as A-1 in the game. 35-1 appears as Z-1, but then the game runs out of letters and things get quite bizarre from there. After 35, the game starts to use random little pieces of sprites and other graphics up until 256. After that it wraps back around, starting at world 0-1.
I had a Game Genie as a kid, and that allowed me to explore a ton of these negative worlds (which is a much more accurate term to describe them.) Basically, data for worlds not accessible in the game through normal means is nonexistent, so the game takes other non-level data (could be item or enemy data for example) and interprets it as level data. This results in very illogical and screwed up levels, some far more messed up then others. Most are very playable, but some will require codes to make them playable due to issues such as instant time up, walls too high to get over, no ground, and Mario getting stuck in pipe cutscene mode. And of course, trying to access some of these will just freeze the game. Not sure if it'd be possible to play any of those, but to find out you'd have to use a hex editor and find out what the game is trying to load that is causing the crash. Changing whatever value is responsible might make some of those playable, but I don't know even remotely close to enough about it. Trust me, this post makes me sound *way* the hell more knowledgeable about this stuff then I really am.
While most of this was stuff I already knew because I knew about the minus World thing way back in the ancient RUclips era of the late 2000s when I first joined the platform, I do recall knowing about these other minus levels that you brought up but I actually didn't know how they were accessed. I thought you were supposed to like hack the game and put a flagpole at the end of the original minus level but that's really cool that there's some way to access them without having to do that thanks to that famicom disk system version.
(8:37) Whoops, you meant "Super Mario Bros.", not "Super Mario World" there.
When you make the thumbnail look scary but the video is calm and entertaining
This may sound weird but video game glitches have always creeped me out. Even today, I have a hard time watching the Game Glitch episode of AVGN.
had a famicom system back in the day complete with disk drive. the first person controller buttons wore out over time with so much game play, we threw it out. the worn out controller and the lack of saving game states after spending like 9 to 15 hours straight on a particular cartridge game (hari kuri docha?) on a regular basis without completing that game were the main two reasons we stopped caring about it. wasting all that time only to die in the end. regretted throwing it out now. we played super mario 2 and 3, gundam, transformers, zelda 1 & 2 a year before it came to the nes, and more.
Makes me want to play this game again.
How about game genie codes that allow you to get to minus worlds?
The minus world was the first NES game secret I found on the internet in 1999.
New sub here don't know how RUclips had made me miss your channel, big retro fan , cracking channel, hooked on learning stuff thankyou I've never known such an expert, will keep it locked 😊
Since the game acts like you're in the warp zone at the end of 4-2 and lets you go to world 5 by taking the middle pipe, what happens if you clip through the wall at the end of world 4-2? If you could get to the single pipe before the numbers showed up, wouldn't it warp you back to world 3?
It's like the situation the people in Stephen King's The Langoliers find themselves in. The Japanese version seems like the programmers knew what they were doing!
Ahh, I love the comments section for videos about 80s/90s content. Where else am I gonna find a reference to The Langoliers?
Loved this upload , massive inspiration to us smaller creators . Thanks for sharing 👍👍
Ever since 1990 I always wondered if there's a way to get out of minus world still to this day other than hitting power and reset
Sadly no, the game code never set up the “exit destination” so it just loops back to the beginning. I wonder if the same would apply if you have game over and did the continue code (A+start) would it take you back to the Minus world
@@RickTheGeek good question I'll try that but what if it takes us to minus -2 world 2
I feel ancient. All these videos referring to Super Mario Brothers as Mario “broze” when growing up, it’s ALWAYS been Mario Brothers. We never pronounced it as “broze”. At least I never did 😂
bro
Mandela effect
@@MICKSHRED I think it’s more of a gen Z thing. The majority of the people saying it like “broze” weren’t even alive when the NES came out. Their first system was likely a N64 or a PS2.
Another Awesome video, Ty for making this video & All video's you've made. Your Awesome Lady Decade take care.
I just did it on switch & works like a charm! Is there a way to bypass the stage somehow to make it through another weird destination?!?
I knew of minus worlds but I didn’t know about the famicom version of the minus worlds. Pretty interesting.
Oh..oh no. Someone. Anyone. Call Scott! The Blue Border is back! ITS OUT!
They mention the minus world even earlier than ‘issue three of Nintendo Power’. In one of the official Nintendo Fun Club News(A precursor to Nintendo Power) they mentioned 4 possible minus worlds. Evidently, their source did not know USA got stripped of all but one of the minus worlds. With this erroneous info in hand I tried to find the other minus worlds but alas they did not exist (At least in the USA version).
The reason the warp pipe doesn't work on the -1 world is because it doesn't load the warp pipe to go to the flagpole. The exploit works because of how it was written and how the game looks for the rules for the world 36. If there was a way to get the warp pipe to load, then world -1 would work and go to another level that would load the rules for it. Famicom looks to different locations and that is why it works. It is really interesting. I still think Mario 3 has more than 3 whistles. My personal theory is that world 3 has one somewhere and that it hasn't been found yet.
Why are people saying "bros" now? It's called "Super Mario Bros." not "Super Mario Bros" That period is important.
I KNOW! I don't like inconsistencies! Like people who say Super Mario or Mario Bros. when talking about ANY Mario game! I talk to someone who says "I like Mario Brothers" I say "which one?" They mention what's in Super Mario Bros. and I say that if you mean Super Mario Bros. don't call it "Mario Bros." because it's a different title and type of game!
@@jescis0 personally that's never bothered me, but I still find it weird that some people apparently call the Nintendo Switch the "Nintendo"... like, what
@@tzarg yeah to each their own, but to a bunch of people it matters, especially when you're a technically minded person or at least a Geek… It matters to me but it's not that big of a deal if anyone else says it without me being in the fascenity… I like to ensure someone is educated than ignorant in any subject and that being said, I also don't mind if someone corrects me(especially when or if I'm wrong about something)… because KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!! 😉😉
I was doing this on Nintendo switch and I got it on my first try
7:26 ~ Is this possible taking the second pipe to another minus world ? Nice video 🔥
Man,I had that very issue of Nintendo power lol and as a kid completely skipped over it ! Very cool coverage LD.
0:23 “From World 1 Through To World 8”
I went into the minus worlds... I never found a way back.
Awesome video!!! One of my favorites from you
I've never been able to pull this glitch off.
That is crazy so many secrets. I don't know if I ever known about minus worlds.
that thumbnail is something else man
good video though
Truly amazing video
MIlady, my mind is blown & needs time to recover. Never knew how in depth the Japanese version took the minus worlds.
I had both Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt on the same game as a kid, I also wished I could shoot the dog whenever it laughed at me, when I saw it in Pixels I had hoped the Grandma would pull out a shotgun or rifle to shoot. Guess it would have been to violent for the kids but I would have enjoyed it.
We need a creepy Mario fangame that revolves around the minus worlds
Yassssssssssss
@@LadyDecadeI follow the link in your short clips and I can't make new comment on the video proper! If I go to someone else's comment and tap twice I can comment a reply… but I can't make a proper individual comment for some reason… 😢😢 But I myself made a five level let's play 11 years ago showing the FDS Super Mario Bros. Minus world! I now have many more FDS games for real and I love my FDS and Sharp Twin Famicom AN-500R! 😁😁🤤🤤
Like your video and what you had to say about it but. one little bit of information that you got wrong the character name for the enemy boss was not Bowser it was King koopa and in Mario lore King koopa is Bowser's father though not widely talked about, you can find out about this in the super Mario Bros super show. But thanks for making the video. I enjoyed watching. It is very nostalgic for me since I grew up in the 80s.
I didn't know that. Does that mean that King Koopa (Bowser's father) had the 7 koopa kids ruling the other worlds in the mario bros 3 game and not Bowser?
I found youtube interface glitches watching this video
It came from clicking the link to this video from the short you posted to advertise this video
Im on a samsung galaxy s10
She starts talking about minus worlds 3 MINUTES INTO THE VIDEO
So the minus worlds are the back rooms of video gaming 😂
in 1986 (in the USA at least) the arcade version of Super Mario bros HAD those two blocks intact at the end of 1-2. They were later removed from all arcade versions, ALONG WITH a patch that also made the turtles turn into Goomba's on the "rob the turtle" level. Why is the 2nd part important? Because Miyamoto claims that the "100 lives trick" (or whatever you want to call it) was intentional. IF it was intentional, why were those turtles replaced with Goomba's at the end of 3-1 with a chip-patch? You cannot Google this fact, because everyone forgot apparently. I only know about this because i watched the two above things with my own eyes, before and after the patches were installed.
@@Jolis_Parsec But Miyamoto claims that the turtle robbing was intentional, and not a glitch. If it was not a glitch, why did they allow the turtles there in the arcade version, and then have all of the cabinets patched later on when people started exploiting it? I say that Miyamoto is lying, and that it was not intentional. (But if you read what he said about this, it could be left up to interpretation).
@@christianb8900 because it was a port. Arcades need to make money. The home version does not
@@ryn5671 You seem to be missing my point. (At least for the turtle robbing issue). I feel that Myimoto is lying, that's all.
How do you get NTSC formatted stuff to work in PAL land?
If you do this in the famicon version you will pass world -1 to -2 then to -3
Nice video. Greetings from -1 world!
Her name is Princess Toadstool not Princess Peach.
Yeah I guess it was Peach in Japan. I remember it always being Toadstool on both the games and The Super Mario Bros Super Show. I guess they started to use the name Peach in games somewhere in the 90's. I was PC gaming during that time so I was kind of living in a cave. My youngest sibling always thought it was Peach.
These are people who have no satisfaction... Too bad, I'm satisfied with MARIO
this is not a "minus world", it is actually displaying the dash 1 world but isn't able to show "36" so it just shows "dash one", so its not a "minus world".
9:15 "um actually" she said that
Some of you content creators need to work for the FBI because of how good you are at gathering information...
My gosh. Lady Decade is gorgeous.
@@BigKenobi ...Oh she is definitely gorgeous.
I've done long divisions and fractions that were more easily explained than this! I went cross eyed half way through.
Clever stuff though.
This was cool
Excelente gracias 😊
The Japanese super Mario 2 is everything minus world should have been
I get that same water level when using super mario bros on some emulators, it just boots straight up into it.
Great video lady decade
She's so pretty - She should get a Ticket ! 👮♂️
Muchas gracias por el video 😎
Merry-o bruvvizz.
When you touch the lava bridge lock same time that bowser touches you do you know what happens😊? and timing is easy try it🥰 and could you kindly explain it😋?
Actually you don't have to crouch to jump up into that block. I've always done it without crouching.
She is cute and kinda cool I wish she was my future wife that I could teach her some glitches on mortal kombat 1 For the super nintendo where you can play as reptile With a glitch code.
What is the Mega Man music playing in the background?
Love your show. Are you going to be using more of those fancy cuts? They made me feel queasy.
Very nice Outro
I would love to check out her minus world.
Like another dimension
The good old days
1:53 - Is it correct to conclude you're saying _Super Mario Bros._ is *a perfectly balanced game* then?
You mean, lady couple of decades.
I was at a kids party when this uploaded, from a certain point of view...children are evil 🐢
There's also a forbidden Game Genie code: K00PAS!😁
If anyone contacts you and asks you to telegram them. Ignore it.. Scammer, I fell for it the 1st time. He tried it again.
Excellent sister.
Everything's gorgeous in 4K. Wow... 👍
There is more - world wtf i didn't know that I thought there only was 1
Anyone know if this works in Super Mario All-Stars?
mar-ri-yo
Literally everyone knows about the minus worlds.
THESE ARE BUGS, NOT HIDDEN STAGES...
Why does the thumbnail show Lady Decade making her "O" face, a demonic Mario, and Mario going down a pipe with the words "Don't Do This" prominently displayed? None of that stuff features in the video...
By the way I have mad it out of water world it is possible
Top Hat Gaming Man is such a lucky mate
Interesting 😊
what about 36-1-j
You are the best. Cheers!🎉❤
