Very, very helpful video. I’m approaching the end of year 3 of sudden onset tinnitus following a traumatic event. In the very beginning, I saw my doctor who told me there is no cure and nothing can be done about it and you’ll just have to get used to it. What followed for me was a downward spiral that resembled my mind being on a high speed elevator heading from the 99th floor to the lobby. I kept looking for answers but didn’t actually trust what anyone was telling me. Getting that early negative / hopeless ‘diagnosis’ from my doctor was absolutely debilitating for me. Fast forward to now, and I am feeling so much better. Tinnitus is still with me but I’m getting better and better at mentally archiving it when I hear it. Yoga has been very helpful (to anyone reading this wondering why it helps? It’s because it takes you out of your head and into your body. You are focussed on something completely unrelated to tinnitus - it’s calming, challenging, requires 100% of your attention, expends energy so likely releasing some of those ‘feel good’ hormones). Another thing I do is daily meditation - anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes depending on my schedule but I committed to practising every day - not gonna lie, I have occasionally missed - hey…I’m human, right? I also go for regular massage and acupuncture - I know not everyone will be able to do that but if your city has a school of massage or acupuncture you might be able to get students who will be supervised and the service is less expensive - I do this because it relaxes my body - gets me out of high alert/siren-danger mode. I get out with friends for lunch or whatever and I get outside for a walk - doesnt have to be sprinting - I just get outside - go somewhere pretty for a walk - I’m lucky to live near the ocean so the beaches are rocky, there’s driftwood, the air smells like salt and seaweed…you get the idea. Last but not least, tinnitus was a wake-up call that gave me a very compelling reason to get back into therapy and figure out my schmutz. It has been helping a lot to understand myself more and learn different, more useful/skillful ways of responding. Don’t get the idea that everything is now just sunshine and lollipops - I still have days - who doesn’t though, right? I commented here because the advice in this video is absolutely useful and valid and I wanted to maybe be a bit of a hopeful voice in what can be a difficult time for someone who is in the early stages of experiencing bothersome tinnitus. Not gonna lie, it’s a lot of work but the days are going by whether you start the work or not. I encourage you to do maybe one thing and give yourself grace…lots of grace. May you be healthy and live with ease.

I used to have mild tinnitus … was bad at first then calmed down and I habituated within a year ….. thought I had dodged a bullet because I was reading online about how many people were suffering from more severe forms. I was a successful Chiropractor and was determined to protect my ears at all costs.
In 2018 I ended up at a hospital in NY with endocarditis … informed the triage nurse and the ER physician I had tinnitus.
My warnings were apparently ignored and they hit me with gentamicin. (Notorious for damaging kidneys and hearing)
I came out of that hospital half deaf and the tinnitus now at catastrophic levels , coupled with hyperacusis , and vertigo.
That was 5 years ago … and nothing’s changed. Today I’m deemed disabled … I’ve lost my chiropractic businesses and I’m just hoping an objective treatment that lowers the noise is found and found soon.
Thank you for this video Doc.

makes sense - we ALL have tinnitus. you are not broken. its just a matter of if you have attached fear, anxiety, dread, gloom and or despair to it. it seems to 'come on' during heightened times of anxiety, tension and hyper vigilance in ones life. if so, your brain will then focus on it and make it a center point of your reality and life. so let it go. yes its not easy at first. we must retrain our feelings toward it. as stupid as it sounds make it as if its a friend.. it will go away back in the background of your life and reality and become a non issue. its the fear attached to it that perpetuates it in your life. God bless.

I heard even the normal hearing people will have tinnitus if they are at very quiet place is it true ? my room at night is about 30DB so I am unsure if it is the cause of tinnitus because my room is too quiet 😢 thank you so much.

I felt the same way when mine, coupled with chronic brain fog, came on 2 years ago. Mine was caused by anxiety and trauma, nothing whatsover to do with being exposed to loud noises etc. I was literally poleaxed by it for at least two years. My social life suffered terribly because of it. I went to ENT specialists, but apart from being very expensive they were no help at all. In desperation I tried everything, including ear devices and vitamin supplements, but nothing eased it up. Try and avoid messageboards as I found them to be full of negative comments. I promise you it does get better with time. You'll find after a while you gradually become innured to the ringing, even when you have the dreaded spikes you do begin to learn to deal with them. Go easy on yourself and please remember, much of it is down to 'fight or flight'! The former wins out all the time. Here's hoping you get better.

3:29 I have a feeling that you're going to go into talking about. Ignoring the sound and that's all frightening dandy. During the day, I'm a very busy woman and during the day. Guess what?
This ringing in my hair really doesn't bother me during the day, because I'm so busy, but when I go to bed that's a different story. And if you're going to tell people, oh, just ignore it. Pretend like it's not there. Because what you focus on expands. I am a religious scientist. I am a science of mind practitioner.
I follow Dr. Ernest Holmes and it is true what you focus on expands. So if I'm going to be talking about ringing in my ears that if I'm going to be researching about supplements that have to do with ringing in the ears, then naturally that's going to be at the forefront of my mind. And then it could make that issue bigger and I could hear more.
I do not make this topic at the forefront of my mind during the day. Because I have other things to think about specifically. I want to gauge the parasympathetic nervous system. I want to engage that Parasympathetic, nervous system every single day. Because staying calm is my number one goal. I have a lot of things that I don't need to engage in and pretty much a lot of them have to do with my sinuses. And my ears that are separate from the ringing in my ears
And I don't need an anti-anxiety medication. I don't need any of that because I am anti. Big pharma, I'm also anti psychiatrist. I don't believe in mental health meds. Other people can take them if they want to take them. That's fine. I am against them for me. I will not take an anti. Anxiety, I will not take an antidepressant, they messed me up. End of story, it is all anti. Big pharma, big pharma, is a very evil entity for me.
So if anybody wants to comment and make a comment on me saying, why don't you go get? It antidepressant, i'm going to say mind your own business!
So for me, it's all about holistic treatment. It's all about natural treatment and doing everything I have to do to engage that parasympathetic nervous system.
But ignoring this, hissing sound very high. Pitched sound when I wake up at 4 AM......Is nearly impossible!
I beg of you that you should never just ignore that hissing sound when you wake up at 3 A. M or ignore that sound when you go to bed at eleven o'clock at night
By saying to people that you should ignore it. You are literally undermining the people's experience.

And every masker I tried made my Tinnitus worse because I have Hyperacusis. The more sounds around me, the worse it gets up to the point that it is so loud that I cannot hear anything else. I cannot listen to music because it is distorted. TV is painful. White noise is painful. I tried everything already, breathing exercises, mindfulness, meditation, hearing aids. NOTHING works!

Hi there, I totally agree with your message, have only just come across this channel! I myself have had tinnitus for just over two years. All that you are describing I can relate too. Yes these are just my thoughts, it is so refreshing to hear someone who recognizes that something is not quite right out there with all the information we are being told about tinnitus. I am with you all the way re thinking outside the box. Who really knows, I feel we just have to try and tune in to what is true within our own being and to try and treat ourselves with kindness as much as is possible. I feel that there is a reason for this noise and it is just the body giving us a signal, something that we may need to address in our life our change in some way, maybe! Yes I can really relate to what you are saying about listening to other noises, I too have hyperacusis and feel I do not want to listen to any noise on top of the tinnitus. I really do feel that there is a way through this and I keep telling myself that I am much more powerful than the tinnitus noise and keep reminding myself each day that there is a way for my brain/ears to harmonize and become calm and peaceful again, this does help to keep going. Hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling. The type of tinnitus you have is challenging, but there are audiologists who specialize. Where do you live?

What if you have very very slight hearing loss? Why would I get hearing aids when I hear perfectly fine? I got tinnitus from a benzodiazepine.

    • @drbradaud
      @drbradaud  Год назад +1

Slight hearing loss on an audiogram can be an indicator of more widespread damage to the sensory cells in the cochlea, so amplification CAN be helpful but no guarantee. If you can do a trial and can afford it, worth a try. That said, managing your tinnitus and getting hearing re-assessed every few years is fine too.

Sometimes tinnitus can be related to the muscles in your neck. I'd suggest visiting an ENT that specializes in the ear, called an "otologist" for an evaluation.

Hi, an audiologist would better at diagnosing hearing loss and can give you advice on tinnitus. I have tinnitus and I have hearing aids, some days it will be loud and other days I can't hear it or barely. Hope you get well soon.

It can happen, though it’s relatively uncommon. In many cases the hearing aids can cause you to hyper-fixate on the tinnitus. Try managing the tinnitus with sound therapy and CBT if necessary, then add hearing aids once it’s under control.

I have had tinnitus in my left ear for 27 years. It wasn't a problem until I got tinnitus in my right ear 2 years ago. It spikes all the time. I have hearing aids which seem to make it louder. I am struggling with work and day to day living. At the end of my tether with it. It is so severe and doctors aren't interested, just told me to ignore it 😢

Generally it will decrease over time, especially if it was recent onset. Diet, exercise, and mindfulness practice can all have a positive impact on it.
