Pick which of those square you're going to break through on, then mine out a little 3-5 square finger directly away from it on your same level, and then dig those floors into channels. The 'X' is the obsidian wall, with the Magma on the other side. The 'u's are the channel you dug (remember, the slopes left by channeling should be one level below your tunnel and the obsidian wall you plan to break through). Hi Twisted, thanks for the vids. Now what happened when the lava reached the stairs on level 45?? also doesn't magma flow up like water when the top level is higher?
If it can go down the stairs it will ! however Magma will not go up the stairs; Pressure is not applyed to magma unless it is pumped with a screw pump.
I can get stones from anywhere on the map & it is faster to forbid the stones then collect them.. there is also a hide item option if they are still visible after the tube is full of magma
I haven't played DF in forever, but it looks very different from what i remember! I was thinking this was the steam version of the game, but I got the idea from your video it isn't? ---> 2:13 so is this how the game looks now? or is this with mods?
@@TwistedLogicGaming Holy shit: I've played for years, and the steam version since launch, and somehow entirely missed the advanced options under the dig menu. Thanks!!
Is there a risk of the magma overflowing upwards? You make a hole and place the furnace on top, right? Like a well. I recently had a massive flood through such a hole because I wasn't paying attention... Mud everywhere now
@@TwistedLogicGaming it just got me really scared, the well was in my hospital and right next to my tavern. If that was magma... I don't think a single dwarf would've survived :0
it depends, also efficiency is not always the most important thing. Also you can't use a magma pump on the side of a volcano without breaching the wall of the volcano. same with the magma sea; however most of the time you can get to the top of the sea. Thanks for watching !!
@@TwistedLogicGaming No, sadly it offered me crappy mechanisms, even tho the lever and bridge were of the same material. Wound up forbidding the other mechanisms.
If I build a magma workshop above one of these magma tunnels will the magma flow upwards (and through the workshops) after it fills the tunnel? Since you said volcanoes can refill itself I fear that my base will get flooded with magma trying to refill itself.
I started playing about 10 or 11 years ago, and for 4 of those years it was every day and the only game I played. I probably should have started this channel much earlier in time hahaha. I also play Kenshi alot and hold the world record for a kenshi speed run to bugmaster! Thank you for watching Rafael !
Kinda unrelated question: If I run a magma stream alongside a frozen river with a 1 tile gap between the magma and river, will the river thaw and begin flowing again?
Running magma under unmined ice will melt it. This appears to be the best way to turn large amounts of ice into water to use as a water source, when all you have is ice and magma. However I'm not sure about next to the river with a wall gap. Creatures that are extremely hot, such as magma men, will melt unmined ice around them, which can potentially lead to fun.
in the versions before steam (v47.5 and before) the workshops had impassable tiles that would block the openings to the magma. for the most part I use a grate over the the hole with a pump-stack on top of this to draw magma through the pump to the workshop area, its a bit more advanced to build. Since I have been playing for more than 10 years now I rarely go for volcanoe sites because of the ease of getting magma, but the same producible applies even if you move the magma 1z. a bridge could also be used in the magma to seal off the source from the fortress the shops only need a 4/7 depth of magma to function correctly. that being said it is a small amount of magma that can easily be transported via mine-cart.
@@TwistedLogicGaming thank you! I guess the raised bridge is the easiest way. Thank you for your videos. They have become a great source of inspiration for me. I also have been playing for 10 years but never touched anything related to minecarts or mechanisms because I thought this is too complex to build. Now I'm playing with a goal of building the magma mist generator :D A possible idea for your video, if you're still making them: A demonstration of wagon-only entrances using ramps. I read about them in the wikis but never really tried, but the idea looks pretty cool, you can create a separate safe way to enter the fortress for wagons, while all other units go to the fortress through a trap-filled corridor.
I was talking about the magma plumes that refill a volcano; I have a video "Draining the magma sea" of version 0.47.x dwarf fortress if you want to see this in the older spacefox tile set! Happy Gaming !
Weird I just did the diagonal cut into the volcano this morning and it worked a treat. Didn't make a pit / pond but did have some nice obsidian doors for everyone to hide behind. I wonder if your guy did that thing where they pause for a moment after completing a job. I saw on the wiki or a forum that it's good to make them an engraver / smoother and give them a job far away right as they initiate the dig order but before they complete it. That way they immediately head off to their other job. A bit micro intensive but worth while if you don't have expendable dwarfs.
3:35 That's kind of wrong, only weak dorfs not worth Armoks respect will die in such a case. If it's an actually worthy dorf, the dorf won't get killed when the lava flows around and over him but instead the lava will become dorfy As 99.9999999999999999999999% of dorfs are not worthy though, it's a Stupid Dwarve Trick one should aspire, after living 5 years in a fortress, the dorf has to face Armoks Trial Of Fire
magma can be used a fuel for some of the workshops. these are a few ways to open a warm stone wall to get magma to flow into your Fortress. if you have a question I will try my best to help
Here is a fun trick. Make a draw bridge with a lever and tell the dwarf to pull the lever. Under the drag bridge is a hole which allows your medical dwarves to practice fixing broken bones. The same trick can be used with magma down the hole if you want that dwarf to go away.

I can get stones from anywhere on the map & it is faster to forbid the stones then collect them.. there is also a hide item option if they are still visible after the tube is full of magma
Sir, you earned yourself a sub
Thank you for supporting the channel SpaceTimeMachine !!
I haven't played DF in forever, but it looks very different from what i remember! I was thinking this was the steam version of the game, but I got the idea from your video it isn't? ---> 2:13 so is this how the game looks now? or is this with mods?
Steam version aka 0.50.x no mods
@@TwistedLogicGaming Ok cool! I'm deffo gonna get it as soon as I can afford it!
Mud everywhere now
no risk for upward flow. You make a hole and place the furnace on top, right? yes
I made a video on water pressure if you want to learn to prevent floodings. Magma is no effected by pressure unless you are pumping it
@@TwistedLogicGaming it just got me really scared, the well was in my hospital and right next to my tavern. If that was magma... I don't think a single dwarf would've survived :0
Wouldn't using pumps be more efficient? Nice playlist tho.
it depends, also efficiency is not always the most important thing. Also you can't use a magma pump on the side of a volcano without breaching the wall of the volcano. same with the magma sea; however most of the time you can get to the top of the sea. Thanks for watching !!
How do you choose the material of the mechanisms used for linking?
it defaulted to the material of the lever for me/ perhaps the same for you ?
@@TwistedLogicGaming No, sadly it offered me crappy mechanisms, even tho the lever and bridge were of the same material. Wound up forbidding the other mechanisms.
You cant wait to see what it looks like in the steam version? What version is this?
I was talking about the plumes of magma that refill the volcanos
Why do you use pits when stairs also let magma flow?
when are you asking about ?
Ty!
How do you drain mass amount of lava? I recently found some adamantine but it is deep in the middle of several level of magma.
In general i recommend getting water down to it and turning it into obsidian then channeling down layer by layer.
If I build a magma workshop above one of these magma tunnels will the magma flow upwards (and through the workshops) after it fills the tunnel? Since you said volcanoes can refill itself I fear that my base will get flooded with magma trying to refill itself.
no magma will stay on the level it is on, unless it can fall a z level or it is effected by pumps
@@TwistedLogicGaming thanks! I found an amazing start with a volcano and a river so my days of fetching magma from waaay down are over!
Excellent, Happy Gaming!
bro i just found your channel today and i need to ask, how many years do you play this game?
I started playing about 10 or 11 years ago, and for 4 of those years it was every day and the only game I played. I probably should have started this channel much earlier in time hahaha. I also play Kenshi alot and hold the world record for a kenshi speed run to bugmaster! Thank you for watching Rafael !
@@TwistedLogicGaming That's cool. I've been playing for 2 years occasionally, but i've learned alot with your videos.
Great, I'm happy that I am adding value to the community ! Happy Gaming! more to come
Kinda unrelated question: If I run a magma stream alongside a frozen river with a 1 tile gap between the magma and river, will the river thaw and begin flowing again?
Running magma under unmined ice will melt it. This appears to be the best way to turn large amounts of ice into water to use as a water source, when all you have is ice and magma. However I'm not sure about next to the river with a wall gap.
Creatures that are extremely hot, such as magma men, will melt unmined ice around them, which can potentially lead to fun.
@@TwistedLogicGaming and what will happen if you tap a river inside a volcano?
if water and magma mix this will create obsidian walls
How do you avoid magma crabs (and other possible creatures that can survive in magma) from going through to your fortress?
in the versions before steam (v47.5 and before) the workshops had impassable tiles that would block the openings to the magma. for the most part I use a grate over the the hole with a pump-stack on top of this to draw magma through the pump to the workshop area, its a bit more advanced to build.
Now I'm playing with a goal of building the magma mist generator :D
A possible idea for your video, if you're still making them: A demonstration of wagon-only entrances using ramps. I read about them in the wikis but never really tried, but the idea looks pretty cool, you can create a separate safe way to enter the fortress for wagons, while all other units go to the fortress through a trap-filled corridor.
Ah yes im more of a "Mech player", the minecarts are not so bad once you learn a few things. Happy Gaming Artem !!
You have a wonderful laugh
How did you mass forbid those rocks near the end?
please click the right most tool in the center tool bar!
a dwarf can mine up one level on a ramp?!?! i am mindblown...
Ancient magic written in the tomes of another time, I was there 3000 years ago
2:14 Is it not already a steam version that he is playing? I don't get.
I was talking about the magma plumes that refill a volcano; I have a video "Draining the magma sea" of version 0.47.x dwarf fortress if you want to see this in the older spacefox tile set! Happy Gaming !
ruclips.net/video/_ghZchftKqE/видео.html here is a link for anyone wanting to see the older video
@@TwistedLogicGaming I see, thanks. You are the fastest hand when it comes to replies, wasn't even expecting your reply 😆
ahhahahaha
@@TwistedLogicGaming Oh no, now I can hear your evil laugh in my head... What have you done?!
3:35
That's kind of wrong, only weak dorfs not worth Armoks respect will die in such a case. If it's an actually worthy dorf, the dorf won't get killed when the lava flows around and over him but instead the lava will become dorfy
As 99.9999999999999999999999% of dorfs are not worthy though, it's a Stupid Dwarve Trick one should aspire, after living 5 years in a fortress, the dorf has to face Armoks Trial Of Fire
Hahahahahaha
You laugh like a Dark Souls NPC.
Ominous.
LOL Thank you !
That poor dwarf :(
RIP hahahahaha
THE LAUGHTER OMG lsakdjalkjdklñas
XD hahahaha
I am so slow I don't get it:(
magma can be used a fuel for some of the workshops. these are a few ways to open a warm stone wall to get magma to flow into your Fortress. if you have a question I will try my best to help
@@TwistedLogicGaming Thank you! I've been plowing through this game for a few days now. Getting used to it slowly :D
Love your laugh so much lol... (no homo)
hahahahahaha thank you
Kabaks meat is melting off his bones and youre laughing at the man
Also his bones are melting!
Here is a fun trick. Make a draw bridge with a lever and tell the dwarf to pull the lever. Under the drag bridge is a hole which allows your medical dwarves to practice fixing broken bones. The same trick can be used with magma down the hole if you want that dwarf to go away.
it seem like your discribing a dwarven atom smasher. that would just kill them. im open to killing them but just sayin'
Rip
