Its so relaxing to have things explained to you like this, insted of playing with my brothers which would drive me to hurting them by blunt force trauma with game pieces
Just bought this game in 2020 (obviously), and immediately went to your videos to learn to play. I still read the rulebooks, but watching your videos makes reading through it so much easier and faster. Not to mention your videos are always a joy to watch.
Thanks for making these videos! Heard about your series on Secret Cabal and I'm so glad I did. These are great! Getting ready to start my Descent campaign soon with friends and this is just the edge we needed to have fun getting going.
big fan of Watch It Played and the Smiths! first time commenter. i believe the players don't know which search tokens are extra because they don't see the setup diagram in the book, so they shouldn't know if a search token can be the key or not.
I'm pretty new to board games; but recently bought Mice and Mystics and so it's become a lot easier to get to grips with the rules of this game because of all their similarities. The way I'm picturing this is "Mice and Mystics + an evil player" and it looks really fun! Thanks for such an awesome job on explaining the rules.
Yes, you'll find there is a whole genre of games sometimes known as "dungeon crawlers", and both of these games fit within that category, so I think you've done a good job of seeing the similarities (and distinctions)
Just a clarification for you, Rodney, just in case it comes into play. The rewording of Girsban's ability allows it to kick in at the moment you take a rest action. The original wording meant that the condition was removed at the end of your turn (since that's when fatigue is removed). This made it a useless ability for conditions like Immobilize (maybe others in the future). Now, Immobilize can be removed with the first action being a Rest, and then the second action could be to move.
Because of this series of videos as well as watching Rodney lose to Luke's insane dice rolls - I just bought this off Amazon for $23 new. Keep up the excellent videos (love that Arcadia Quest play thru btw.)
this made me able to play while I was wine drinking in my living room with my new lovely gf while my roommates were gone during the quarantine, I went into their board game cupboard when they weren't home, lol...... and we were able to defeat the Ettins and goblin archers granting our party and a grand total of 3 whole experience points granted amongst a Warrior, a Necromancer, and I Arvic Albright the Disciple!!!!1one!@1
I can hardly wait until you get started playing with your son. Hurry up please. You have done a great job explaining everything, now I want to see some action. :)
Question: Playing as an overlord, how much information is given to the heros(players) at the beginning of the quest? Such as possible key locations, quest objectives, and overlord objectives. Thanks and great videos!
As a group, you can probably decide how much you want to reveal, but the scenarios are not hidden information (except for any information it specifically says should remain hidden).
Actually, everything in the quest book is open information. The players know that the key cannot be in the "3" spot, but it can still be a treasure chest or another nice find.
Sir ur videos are so much informative and really I appreciate the efforts you put in... plz do make a video on Arkham Horror: The Card Game. Love and Respect from India 🇮🇳
Hello Rodney. I'm looking into painting my miniatures after owning this game for 7 years or so and I can't help but notice how great your miniatures look. Did you paint them yourself? Do you know of anyone who made helpful videos about painting Descent minis?
I have done miniatures painting, but these I was gifted by a friend (you'll find that covered here: ruclips.net/video/-zkbqRleXLM/видео.html). Three are loads of great videos online to learn how to paint. I don't have specific recommendations, but I'm sure you'll find lots of great options!
Really great videos. I am so glad that I stumbled accross this chanel. I still have one question though. The heroes obviously are told what their goal is but what about the goal of the Overlord? Is he supposed to tell the heroes what he needs to do to win? I am just asking because this makes a great difference when it comes to the dynamic of the gameplay and I just preordered a reprint of the game^^
I was wondering: Can a figure perform a ranged attack, checking line of sight from a corner, that is a "wall corner"? (at minute 3:25 the upper right corner of that hero; but not regarding that specific shown scenario) Same thing: Can a corner, which is a "wall corner", be target of a ranged attack?
***** maybe I just used clumsy words to make myself clear. English is not my native language :) Assuming a Figure is standig right next to a wall, two corners of that field sort of "hide" behind that big black line, which represents the wall. Can those "hidden" corners be the start (or the end) of the line, which is drawn to check line of sight?
reading the comments below another question that was bothering me came to mind: "When the Overlord brings in reinforcements, do they all have to be the common type of monster, or can the elite version of the monster be brought back on if the original elite monster has died?" This question hasn't been answered yet, so I'm just asking again :D
Hi! I have a question. If I use Dark Charm on a hero (succesfully for me as OL) and I move it on lava terrain, does the hero dies since it ended the movement on a lava terrain?
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
It was my understanding that multiple-session campaign play was a feature added by an expansion. Are there campaign features (leveling up characters, buying and selling equipment) in the base game?
NathanielLiles Multiple session campaign play is included directly in the base game, including leveling up and buying/selling equipment. Expansions just add to that, or include whole new campaigns.
For reinforcements, they can not exceed the number specified for the number of heros correct? So you can't have more than 3 minion monsters in this scenario? Also can the Master Monster in the Open Group be reinforced?
The reinforcement rules are dictated by the scenario, but yes, in general, you may not exceed the limit based on the number of players. And yes the Master Monster can be part of that reinforcement (assuming the scenario does not say otherwise).
Hi. Thank you for really great videos. And a little question: can a monster pass an item to another monster? Or in order to do that the item must first be dropped and than picked up?
Hi! could you reuse a group of monsters in the second act that you used in the first act? Ie if your spiders were killed upstairs, could you have another spider group waiting in the dungeon?
Hey there, an Act is spillted into 2 scenes. Do you refreshed everythings before you start playing the 2nd scene? Means all hearts and fatigue tokens from the Heroes? And all used Overlord cards? Or do you all tokens?
When players transition from one encounter of a quest to another, they perform the following steps: • Heroes keep all damage suffered during Encounter 1. • Heroes recover all fatigue suffered during Encounter 1. • Heroes keep all conditions they had at the end of Encounter 1. • Each hero player flips his Hero sheet faceup. • Heroes keep all search cards; any flipped cards remain flipped. • Any knocked out heroes may perform a stand up action for free. • The overlord player keeps his current hand of Overlord cards. • Players disassemble the map for Encounter 1 and refer to the Quest Guide in order to set up the map for Encounter 2.
Hey Luke, you'll find the main tutorial for the game here (the description has an index, to help you find the sections of the rules you are unsure about): ruclips.net/video/Zw3c5mlEVkY/видео.html
Hey Graeme, I avoid offering reviews on this channel, as I find everyone has their own sense of what is fun for them in a game, but my hope is that by showing how it works you can get a good sense of whether or not you think it would suit you and your friends. Thanks for checking out the video!
Hi - Thanks for getting back to me and also for an honest answer - you have got yourself a subscriber :) it does look like an awesome game so will watch a few more of your videos - thanks again
Great to have you here! Yes, our play through might help expand your sense of whether or not it would be a good fit for your group - hope you enjoy watching!
This game is actually really hard to purchase nowadays, do you have recommandations on any similar games that would have the same depth? Capaign with good stories, character evolution, travel and the possibility to have an overlord? I took a look at DnD but I like it less.

great channel, deserves to be bigger!
Thanks for being a part of it!
By the way Rodney, amazing intro for this series. You've been doing some really good ones, but this one for Descent is a homerun.
Great instructional! Your professional, well written script made that time fly! Great job.
Thank you kindly Mark!

Ahhh, that X-wing movement token. Such a brilliant game.
Also as reinforcement goes, apparently in 4-hero games you can reinforce the ettins

Excelent explanations man. Good video series. Subscribed.
Thank you kindly - glad to have you here!

Cool to know they have updates to the rules at the website. I wouldn't have imagined that.

Nice job Yung (both on learning and successfully adventuring :) )
Good use of other FFG components to explain FFG rules.
I've been trying to think of what this series music reminded me of and I got it! Carl Sagan's Cosmos!
:D
Star Wars Cameo at 3:18, it's The X-Wing Line of Sight Line jejejej
You got it :)
You are an amazing instructor. thank you a lot!
Very kind of you to say.
Well played sir, well played!

4:00 "Sorry you can't see any monster, because a monster is blocking you line of sight" :D
Quite a wild rule, right? :)
Haha! Line of sight blocked by what you're trying to see!
Yes, that is the one rule I get the most questions about :)
+ Watch It Played is a friendly figure considered an obstacle for line of sight?
Yep!
***** thank you very much!great videos btw...I learned how to play from your videos
Could play house rules and allow it but remember it applies to the Overlord too. As long as all agree and the rules are consistent then it's OK

The rules states that nothing in the Quest book is secret, so you can consider all of it public information.

It's hard to answer this without an exact visualization. Might be a better question for a forum where you can post a picture.
***** maybe I just used clumsy words to make myself clear. English is not my native language :)
Assuming a Figure is standig right next to a wall, two corners of that field sort of "hide" behind that big black line, which represents the wall. Can those "hidden" corners be the start (or the end) of the line, which is drawn to check line of sight?
Yaron Glücklich Yes, as long as they don't pass through any thing (like a wall) which some of the back corners likely would.
Hey Rodeny, great video as usual!! is the Overloard reinforcement step part of the base rulebook? or is it part of the quest?
It's been long enough since I've examined those rule books, that I'm not sure.
@@WatchItPlayed Hey Rodney, thanks for the response, and I've found the answer, it's base on quests :)
I see you answered my question in this video. Sorry for asking a question that's been asked already.
No problem at all, it's not an obvious rule, but it shows you were paying attention when you were watching, which is good!
Ok, let the dices roll, this will be fun =)
reading the comments below another question that was bothering me came to mind:
"When the Overlord brings in reinforcements, do they all have to be the common type of monster, or can the elite version of the monster be brought back on if the original elite monster has died?"

Yep, you can bring the elite back.
I didn't find the Cavern quest in Act I or Act II manuals. Am I missing something?
I believe in later releases of the game they might have changed the name of some quests (or possibly replaced them).
Effectively, they replace the old campaign « Shadow rune » by a new one which is called « Heirs of blood ».

+TonyPizzaPie Must be dropped and then picked up. Though the rules of the scenario is where this is specified, if memory serves me correctly.
Hi! could you reuse a group of monsters in the second act that you used in the first act? Ie if your spiders were killed upstairs, could you have another spider group waiting in the dungeon?
It all depends on the monster restrictions for the scenario. Assuming that second portion also allows for Spiders, then yes!

Does allies heroes block line of sight?
Yes.
hallo i have a question i buy this game but i dont get simple quest guide just campaign called heirs of blood act's 1,2 why?
I think they made some changes to the titles in future printings of this game.
I thought that you can not attack diagonally. Is that actually the case or not?

What's XP for? and when can I use it?
Between quests to level up your character with new abilities.
awsome
Just so everyone knows. I'm pro-ettin whooping for the key.
That line of sight situation is super whacky:""I can't see you, because you are blocking my sight" wtf?!
Yeah, it's a very odd rule!
