Hahahaha! I don't plant the entire taro, I cut off the growing nub and plant that and I eat the rest! I am in the UK so they are kinda special and cost a fair bit too!
Do you plant it right after cutting or wait for the cut surface to dry? I'm afraid mime spoils, since it started to grow fluffy mold at the bottoms. But tops show lil pink shoots, so I'm hopeful.
This variety of taro is from originally from Japan, called dasheen. They’re not very big, excellent with soups and stews. Pacific taro grow way bigger and grows in water and on land. Polynesians took taro on ocean voyages because it didn’t spoil.

I bought a tuber from the grocery store but don't know which end goes in the dirt? Do I have to keep in a plastic bag first to sprout? Please and thank you
Yes that is a good idea to put sideways if you can’t tell. But I think it’s not so hard to tell. The growing green part should be pointing up. The top part is also wider than the bottom.
@@ALittleGardenUpNorth when I buy them there is no growth green on the. I just bought another one yesterday. I had them in planters last year but think now that I have a few extra Ill try them in the ground. I have great soil up here..
This is what I did today here in my home in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I bought 3 taro tubers from a grocery store for just RM1 (USD0.24). The tubers already sprouting in the shop with green spears/shoots on top. I planted them in a big grocery bag, I dug holes at bottom of bag, pour in a mixture of several types of soil, and I buried the tubers in the soil. I planned to do this 2 weeks ago, I bought a lot of tubers for planting. But my wife cooked the tubers this afternoon, she didn't know these were planting materials, she thought the tubers would soon go bad as they were giving out shoots in the basket. No harm done, I just bought new tubers which I immediately planted today to avoid them going into the chicken curry pot again! Haha!
That was quite an adventure for your taro bulbs. Thanks for sharing, gave me a chuckle today. She’s a wise woman, would not let food go to waste 😄 I hope that your planted bulbs would do great!
Hmmm, are we going to have taro in coconut milk soon? They spicy fish you’ve got the other day would be a great compliment to the dish. Don’t forget to invite me. 🤣🌶
The taro bulb is from the grocery store, it was left inside the plastic bag for weeks. There was a little moisture in the bag and it was just on the kitchen counter top. It sprouted just like that.
I appreciate your reply. I bought taro bulb from grocery store and have planted more than three weeks, no result yet. I will use your tip next year. Thank you so much. I do not think I can take it from pot, it will ruin my bulb.
Thanks ate. Yes they had a good start. Do you have a good recipe for gabi and coconut milk? Will go and inspect how the plants did and if they can be cooked soon.
Both Taro and Elephants Ears are different varieties from the same species of plants. Taro is grown for food while elephant’s ears is ornamental, not sure if it’s edible.
I bought taro from the grocery, the problem is it grow roots but not leaves. How long shall I wait for it to grow foliage or it might not grow foliage anymore cause the taro from the stores might be sprayed with chemicals for it not to grow leaves.
Hi Emilie, did you plant them in soil yet? It took a month almost before i saw green sprouts from my taro bulb, you are right, they are sprayed with growth retardant. Then after I planted them in soil, it took another 2-3 weeks before I saw the leaves growing. It took time.
@@ALittleGardenUpNorth oh yes. I planted it directly in the pot. Then when I saw your video. I try to excavate and inspected the roots. But I buried it again and placed a mixing soil cause it rooted. The next day, I saw several shoots. I hope that it will become leaves. I just planted it in less than a month. So you’re probably right even I planted it in June and now July. It will take Somewhere in August for it to sprout its leaves. Thanks for responding.
And it like shady area and moist soil all the time. I think it liked when I watered it with banana peel tea rich in potassium yesterday. I saw it grew several shoots. Thank you for the tips!
The container is too small. There is no need to plant the whole taro, just the buds with half an inch thick flesh is enough. This plant is not fragile or hard to grow . Just throwing out the left out taro in the back yard in Asia results in huge patches of growth.
Pop them in a zip up plastic bag with a touch of water and leave in the airing cupboard for 2 months. They come out with roots and growth. Then plant in perlite compost mix . I had 50 this year wooop wooop
Rip off indeed. Unfortunately even in the Indian Stores here it’s also very expensive. Imported goods in Canada (and remote places, like where I live) are like gold!
Hardiness zone 6 here, it's expensive and very hard to get in stores, we don't have Asian stores in my region, and in supermarktes it was available at the beginning of February, when they sold Asian stuff & foods, I guess it's linked with Lunar New Year. I bought few bulbs and hope to grow them, taro is so tasty!

I am also excited for the continuation...part 2. I'd love to see how they turned out.
Thank you so much for your comment. It gave me an encouragement to post the next part. Much appreciated. ♥️

@@ALittleGardenUpNorth yes where is part 2?
I love this kind of video, without all the talking, right to the point and relaxing to watch. Informative and helpful. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the kind feedback. I hope to see you around.
I planted this spring some tarot roots in container as well. They’re growing wonderfully, thank for sharing your video
Oooooh, I sure wish there was more. I was hoping to see how they grew.
Thank You For This Video 🤗

Chur to that ! From NZ
We plant just the tip in nigeria as well as we eat the entire thing
I'm in the UK too. Can you do this with eddos aka cocoyam? How do you sprout them?

yes beautiful sharing for planting taro
Nakakamis din yung mga ginagawa nung lola ko naalala ko siya sa mga content niyo po
I sliced off the top and planted. It has started to sprout. The yam (tuber) I boiled to make thai black sticky rice dessert.
This video was so satisfying to watch and listen to 🙏🏽
Thank you. Very kind of you. 🥰

I think the only edible part is the root, and you may need to look up how to properly process the tuber(corm?) as well.
Ang husay mo talaga sa pag pa planting sissy..
Very nice! Kung magwork out iyan share a plant ha? Hehe.

Can I plant them on December? Inside my indoor mini greenhouse?? I can't wait
Hi guys
I love the project
Are leaves edible?
I think you have just planted a Japanese taro called Satoimo. Good luck!!!
May sayote din.... kumusta iyong sayote. Nabuhay ba?

Thank you for sharing ;fully watch and support

thats great when they sprouted but how do you tell which end is up. They say if you are not sure you should put them on their sides.

:) the dust is tickling my nose :)
1. you might want to skip the germinating part and just sow directly in the dirt.
2. it's probably easier if you skip wetting the soil first.
What does it grow into
wow. trending po sis
Watching 😍
It’s almost October in Ohio, is it too late?
I store it in plastic bag but it turns little white fungus.why this happend
Salam apu
You Don't need to plant all mukki. You can make it half.
How often do taro divide?
Here in Zone 4, I have to harvest in the fall. So every year for me. They grow bigger if you can leave them in ground for more than one summer.
Is taro a perennial?
Not in Canada that’s for sure. As soon as the cold came, the leaves withered. But the bulbs can be saved for planting again (or eating).
@@ALittleGardenUpNorth So how did it turn out? I got some bulbs too from the store. Let me know! I’m in California.

What a waste. You could’ve cut off the tops and eaten the bottoms, since they were already ripe. And replanted the tops.
