How will Israel and the US respond to Iran's attack on Israel? | DW News

  • Published on May 28, 2024
  • An aerial assault was launched by Iran against Israel overnight: The Israeli army says more than 300 missiles and drones were fired. It is the first time Iran has launched a direct military attack on Israel despite decades of hostility.
There's been calm over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in the wake of the barrage. Almost all the missiles were intercepted by Israel and the US. The UK and Jordan have also shot down drones. Air raid sirens sounded across Israel. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard says the assault was in retaliation for an attack on its embassy in Syria on April 1st which killed 16 people including several Iranian generals. What considerations will Israel have to take into account as it decides how to respond? How difficult will it be for Israel and the US to agree on a clear response to this attack?
If it decides to retaliate, will Israel be able to drum up enough support? And can it respond without the US' support?

there is a difference between defend and attack, if rockets are shot at you thats an attack, you can respond by attacking back, that is defence, if you shoot at someone first thats agressive attack, and you can expect a defensive response

Iran has lost its right of defending itself already long before with all its proxies like hisbola, which have been attacking Isreal long before. You can't stand there and act as if Iran is so innocent and has not been involved in any military attack against Israel before.

Iran announced the atrack and gave Israel plenty of hours for their civilians to go to safe places. This is something only very few (2) armies in the world do. Iran's purity of arms.
Iran had the right, even the obligation, to defend itself.
However, Iranians and israelies knew these drones represented very little risk. This shows how Iran took all the necessary measures to minimize civil casualties, and Iran succeeded. Something other nations have to learn from.

Gallant said the IDF did a great job in resisting the attack but the US said it shot down 99 of the missiles and Jordan, France and the UK bagged some too. So the IDF by itself did a rather poor job, given that about half of the missiles would have got through without help from outside. Since Israel started this, they should be left to handle the consequences by themselves. Otherwise they will never learn.
