Beautifully summed up guys 👍. As a viewer since 1963(at the age of 6) this show is very much part of my life. I have really struggled with this series. You have verbalised my feelings better than I could. I guess I will expect a bill from you shortly as this was definitely a therapy session. I feel better now 👌

The existential surprise I felt when my name got read out! 👍
The season is one where I can't imagine anyone hating an episode in isolation, but like you said it's the most "discardable" it's been in a while.
As a package it was all over the place. Individually, almost any episode is sort of a "this is doctor who" "okay then..." sort of response.
When Boom and Rogue are my favourites and I still have major problems with half of them, and you have 8 eps 2 of which are extremely silly first impressions, 2 of which hardly feature the doctor, 2 of which are the finale, and 2 of which I find personally enjoyable but are splintered apart ever 3 episodes... its a bit of a mess.
73 Yards and Dot And Bubble are interesting, but what am I meant to make of them after the whiplash between 2 hokey, 1 war story, then 2 experimental What Ifs. I've tried reordering them and I think the problem is a lack of cohesive whole, you always get back down to the Finale where the characters have no depth and the mystery has no depth and the worldbuilding wants to ride on 'a wizard did it'. That empty finale makes an otherwise average hollow season feel far worse.

Reminiscent of the Doctor's companions support group, I think, as a DW fan, that many fans including myself need much therapy and could do with a trauma therapy group after the total head-fuck that RTD does with the fandom. I'm still holding out for an 8-part mini-series with the 8th Doctor.

I kind of did wonder if Dot and Bubble should have made the racism more obvious, at least at the end, but i think the way they did it is the point.
The fact is racism sometimes isn't always noticeable. There's things that i might brush off without realising it's racist.
But there's also another reason for me. I love when political messages aren't thrown at you. A lot of the messages in Chibbnals era felt like that, like they where tacked on, with Orphan 55 even having the doctor basically turn to camera and lecture the audience at the end.
It reminds me of one of my favourite zombie films, the original 1978 Dawn of the dead. The first time I watched it I was young and the whole consumerism social commentary angle was lost on me, but I still loved it as a zombie film.
I feel dot and bubble is the same, if you don't see the message it's not that your racist but it doesn't also make the episode not work. The ending I just thought it was because they didn't want saved by someone older/poorer etc. but it hits even harder now knowing the real reason

A lot of what you're saying there, I recognise as things we've said over the years. Jodie half-turning to camera to deliver a lecture is something I picked up on years ago in our hot takes of her era. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. And the fact is racism sometimes isn't always noticeable is something Dave hammers in this very episode as the basis of how RTD *could* have framed his comments around this episode in a much more interesting way, but chose not to. Some missed opportunities.

horrible season. I checked out after the horny flirt Doctor story. i’ll pop in for a bit of next season but it’s too far removed from what Doctor Who has established over the last 60 years.
