sounds great . I would love to see this kind of skin in clothes , gloves and other uses . if its really stronger and durable than the real leather then its be a revolution !
You'd have an even larger market if you were able to get it to look and act (carve/tool) like vegetable tanned leather. I use veg tanned leather every now and then to make sheaths for the knives I make. The smooth, solid colors as well as the very clean and crisp patterns/images you can stamp or carve in it make it very nice to work with, not to mention it can also be molded into almost any shape and remain firm afterwards.
TinaWavelet I Can’t wait either to buy my first pair of Muskin boots!. 20% of the profits of a farmed Animal is in its skin, so when this hits the market it will make Animal farming unprofitable, no business can take a 20% drop in sales esp the dairy industry with all its disease from factory farming!.
What a beautiful bedtime story. Much better than the crappy news on TV or radio. Just imagine: A casting made from your foot, and abacadabra, a shoe is grown to perfectly fit your feet. Amazing and soo beautiful! This is just one aspect of this great thing. Why the heck isn't that shown on the news!!!??
Wonderful material. The leather from mushrooms will help us to ditch synthetic leather, make shoes more affordable, reduce the use of natural resources and to make a world a bit better. *Great invention !*
It could be a great idea to help clothes anyone in the future for a less expensive price. But it's still a living organism that you're using. So it's still using another life
What products have Mycoworks made since this vid, 4 years ago?, it was said back then that you had 2 major shoe manufacturers interested, what happened to that?
leather worker here, 100% on board to move to a cost effective alternative, question, is it as strong as leather, can it be watermolded, can it be dyed
Steve Thomas The Plant Leather that ‘Self disintegrates’ is the one made from ‘Kumuchi’ tea. The ‘Muskin’ ( Fungi Leather) has ALL the properties and strengths as Animal skin, it can be stitched in same way as leather, it is water proof, anti bacterial, breathable. If you had watched the vid you would of known all this. Before writing something off before even checking it out, is just closing your mind to new breakthroughs that will be a part of the future!.
So this process sounds similar to scoby leather making, however I am guessing that they have discovered some new ways of treating it for waterproofing excetera
I'm not so sure. The reason why leather from cows even exist and is continuing is that it is an extra resource from slaughtering cows for its meat. If they focus on this type of resource what would happen to the excess cow skin from slaughter houses in acquiring the meat from the cow?
I keep ‘liking’ this vid and when I go back to it my ‘like’ is off, so I have to keep ‘liking’ it. This happens on some other vids of progressive technology vids I visit such as Algea Bio Fuels(PBR), Fungi products etc.
What has happened so far re the 2 Shoe manufacturers and the target of ‘in-house production’ by 2020? I really want Muskin boots, jackets etc, are any for sale now? If not why?
Plastic has replaced materials but now we need to replace pLaStIc. Faux leather is wanted in furniture without it being pleather. Those mycelium block chairs should be upholstered with the leather for full mushroom chairs.
What has happened in the 4 years since this vid?, are there any Muskin products on the market? It says in the vid that you are in talks with major manufacturers and expect a deal ‘in a year’( 2017), its now 2020( nearly 2021). But no news of where Mycoworks are with actual products?
I'm just getting interested in mycology and the material generation that could come from our attention is huge. If you are willing to risk, invest in technologies associated with this breakthrough. Use our gains to assist the animals that will need in the aftermath.
Why aren’t they bringing this to hands of Iris Van Herpen or Alexander McQueen to create fashion and acknowledge masses of this revolutionary material already. This could slowly eliminate the use of leather entirely.
But you have to have the need. Most people would carry on dumb. Those that speak out gives the energy to make it be. Not negative ultimately as you think. Simpletons always like to make digs at the ones that make awareness
This approach already proves that you can convince people to different methods over the old ones, rather then forcing people to change.. Forcing people to do anything won't help, it only creates the negativity for people to stay the way they are. Changing the established mindset is hard..
It's the "stupid vegan complaints" that are the driving force behind this kind of innovation. Without the vegans you hate so much, there would be no demand for an environmentally-friendly alternative to leather. But go ahead and heap hate on vegans. Of course vegans are the problem, not the factory-farm industry that tortures and kills defenseless animals every single minute and those who happily support it with their hard-earned money.
+Morph Verse How the hell are vegans _forcing_ people to not use any animal products? No one, not even meat eaters, is forcing on eachother a certain diet.
There's nothing quite like leather from a good tannery. That said, most of the leather used in the fashion/clothing industry is complete crap. It's also made with plastic finish and bonders, little better than petroleum-based leather alternatives. Synthetic leather alternatives are better as car interiors than real leather. I really hope that plant or fungus-based alternatives like this take the place of the vast majority of leather used on earth. And then the food industry catches up so they don't have the excuse of leather just being a by-product. I realize that might take longer.
the only thing that kinda stinks is the lack of transparency on how its made, you can't expect stuff like this to ever take off unless you give access on how to make this for -everyone- Especially considering that at the very worst impact to the business is that you have people making better versions or learning how to do it more sustainable, which should always be your goals when it comes to eco friendly solutions
Elena N.Akasha u dont even fk know what suffering means 4 an animal, but u still fk talk. Do u find any diffrence between us an the animals u love ? because it seams there is 4 u. If u open ur eyes ul see that we are harvested just like them. Now think, what is going to happen when they are going to lose utility.
I AM A GOD DAMN VEGAN & AN ACTIVIST because of the suffering imposed on animals,i dont just love pets,i love ALL animals. I dont eat them nor wear them, how abt you?As a civilized society, it is our moral obligation to prevent needless cruelty to animals, to value and respect all life forms. They are not commodities, they were not put in this earth for us to abuse for our own benefit. Its that simple. Humans dont need animal products..humans can be sustained without animal products and certainly no need for leather, fur & wool when there so many alternatives.
Legion Boh Why the F do you cry for dogs and cats then ? Why do you keep them as pet ? Just slaughter them and eat em too. After all they are animals like cows and lambs. Hypocrite loser
People still eat beef. She's leaving that out. Not using a beef cow's leather, or a milking cow's leather would be a waste and even more would be "thrown away". Second, I doubt any of the real leather gets thrown away. They usally put leftover cowparts into dog food. The process of tanning is a different story. Mushroom leather is a good idea, but don't throw beef skin to waste.
The premise of this speech is that the animals are killed for making leather. You forgot to mention that the animals are killed for the meat industry, please at least suggest how would you dispose of the skin of the animals if it is not used for making leather.
Too bad it doesn't work and is naught but a pipedream. The company exists since 2013, now 2 years after this video were she claims they can compete there are still exactly 0 products using their supposed material. And the reason is simple: cause it doesn't work. It is pathetically easy to produce leather imitates, but it is extremely difficult to create a material with similar or better characteristics. The reason why we use leather is precisely because it is such a great material. Same as we will not magically find things to replace steel, concrete or glass.
What are the duration of the materials lifespan and start time to compost? In other words, how long can the new leather like material survive environmental constitutions? You may answer here but would you please let me know? Thank you, jamesguenes@gmail.com
70% of the hide isn’t thrown away. And for all you saying you hate the leather industry, stop eating meat then. Its the same industry. She also didn’t say it was as durable cow hide. This isn’t them doing something great for the earth. This is them finding a way to make cheap faux leather and put a spin on it so it sells better. It won’t affect how much leather we make because we still have the need for cattle farms.
Kevin McBigPP On another video, it was said that the demand for leather is higher than the supply, so inventing new faux leathers seems to be a good solution. That way we'll avoid overproducing meat to an even larger degree than we already do, just to get more leather.
3 years and nothing new? Did the company fail? Where are the products? $50 a yard is outrageous lol good luck with that. Chemically altered is not natural lol .
Yes, if you're a meat eater who supports the unspeakable, horrific cruelty that the factory-farm industry engages in with your hard-earned dollars because you feel your taste buds and habits are more important than the lives of living beings, it would be hypocritical of you to wear mushroom leather. Some of us, however, have a problem with the idea of torturing and killing animals. Some of us have been waiting for an environmentally-friendly alternative to leather for decades.
Higher demand than supply, idiot. All the leather from those cows could get used (And it isnt, by the way) and not fill the market's desires. This wont waste cow leather, the meat industry does that just fine on it's own. This product means the demand can actually be met. Fuck the vegan/non-vegan arguments, all of that is irrelevant in the face of your overwhelming stupidity right from the start.
Would LOVE a jacket and belt from mushroom leather I'd be happy to have that over cow hide
If you like this initiative, maybe you would also like our alternative to leather: ruclips.net/video/vO4OGUY1O5U/видео.html
Bet it's not inexpensive.
Amen to that 👌
Sweet vid. Really dig this sort of stuff.
Would love to see more. Keep it up.
sounds great . I would love to see this kind of skin in clothes , gloves and other uses . if its really stronger and durable than the real leather then its be a revolution !
Amazing .. Very interested in this and the future it holds
Girl we got two years before we start seeing this on the market! I can't wait
i love this.... I hope many fashion companies will embrace this. doing this will save the lives of our animals...
You'd have an even larger market if you were able to get it to look and act (carve/tool) like vegetable tanned leather. mushrooms are miracle, amazing! can't wait! :-)

Wow, so glad I’ve learnt this. Thanks
😍 I can’t wait for this to become “the norm” mycelium is amazing!!!

This is awesome stuff. I support this!
This is incredible!!
Wonderful material. The leather from mushrooms will help us to ditch synthetic leather, make shoes more affordable, reduce the use of natural resources and to make a world a bit better.
*Great invention !*
I can't wait until 2020! I hope the goal is reached by then.
how can i invest? this seems like a very promising product, with great designers behind it.
That was my thought exactly. How can we invest in this sort of company? Also extremely excited by New Culture.
Hats off to Phillip Ross for this new resource for leather like materials....!!!!
Cheers...!!!
Amazing! I can't wait!
Why are they not still famous in the market? I hope people get to know more about this to save our planet from plastic garbage!
AWESOME!!! Well done!
wondering how this is a carbon negative footprint when mycelia exude carbon into the local area?
It could be a great idea to help clothes anyone in the future for a less expensive price. But it's still a living organism that you're using. So it's still using another life
What products have Mycoworks made since this vid, 4 years ago?, it was said back then that you had 2 major shoe manufacturers interested, what happened to that?
Would your material be suitable tents and yurts?
I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!
when can i get a jacket, and when will yall get deals in there with like amazon and ikea. cuz like we need this right away!
EXCELLENT!!!!
Where are we with the products ? It looks like VERY interesting and we are already in 2018 ! :)
Holy shit! I'm impressed!
leather worker here, 100% on board to move to a cost effective alternative, question, is it as strong as leather, can it be watermolded, can it be dyed
bob bobbing it can be dyed
Yes she said it was more durable than other animal leathers through testing
I think it can be grown with any colour, watermolding won't be a problem
+Steve Thomas not all fungus smells, also it is dead.
Steve Thomas The Plant Leather that ‘Self disintegrates’ is the one made from ‘Kumuchi’ tea. looking forward to this coming to market
So this process sounds similar to scoby leather making, however I am guessing that they have discovered some new ways of treating it for waterproofing excetera
This is a breakthrough realization. We can abuse mushrooms and yeasts instead of cows, etc.
this is going to save tons of lifes
And tons of flies!
I'm not so sure. The reason why leather from cows even exist and is continuing is that it is an extra resource from slaughtering cows for its meat. If they focus on this type of resource what would happen to the excess cow skin from slaughter houses in acquiring the meat from the cow?
how can you save an animal that it is not born?
Romania de azi Very carefully.
lives.
Where we can get samples for this leather? We also research on leather.
It's been three years and it's almost 2020, how far a we in the process?
I am soooo excited about this 😘
well done!!!!!!!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗👌👌👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Hi, from where can we order this mushroom leather from. I'm located in India. Kindly guide.
This was 2016, has ANY Muskin products been commercially made yet?
Amazing....
Clap clap!
Outline the process ❤
Is the procedure proprietary or are you gonna show us how to make some at home?
What type of mycelium is use?
I'm interested in seeing how it performs, it's been close to two and a half years since the video came out, any updates?
If you like this initiative, maybe you would also like our alternative to leather: ruclips.net/video/vO4OGUY1O5U/видео.html

I keep ‘liking’ this vid and when I go back to it my ‘like’ is off, so I have to keep ‘liking’ it. This happens on some other vids of progressive technology vids I visit such as Algea Bio Fuels(PBR), Fungi products etc.
Does this fungal leather require chemical tanning or any other chemical treatment for augmenting its life and quality?
yes or it will rot like all living things.
coooool
What has happened so far re the 2 Shoe manufacturers and the target of ‘in-house production’ by 2020? I really want Muskin boots, jackets etc, are any for sale now? If not why?
Can you make Earthing or grounding shoes?
Strangely looks like bread that has been growing mold for 3 years
Make a skateboard out of these and I'm down 100%
I want to learn more about this how it manufacture please send me the link ..respect from Nepal .
I want to buy sheets of this stuff right now!
Plastic has replaced materials but now we need to replace pLaStIc. Faux leather is wanted in furniture without it being pleather. Those mycelium block chairs should be upholstered with the leather for full mushroom chairs.
looking forward to buying a custom belt.
Why look forward? Grow one!
so where is it??? I want some.
Does this water proof?
What is the ticker ?
So what happened when nobody buy leather? The hides will be 100%waste, or every bodey will stop to eat beaf?
Well where is it? It is 2019!
Nicee
👏👏👏👏
I want to know more about your myco bcriks if you have any
What has happened in the 4 years since this vid?, are there any Muskin products on the market? It says in the vid that you are in talks with major manufacturers and expect a deal ‘in a year’( 2017), its now 2020( nearly 2021). But no news of where Mycoworks are with actual products?
IM SO FUCKING HAPPY
Is it muskin? Or something else?
Phoebe will be blown by this ..😃😃😃
Can scoby be used as substrate for mycelium?
I'm just getting interested in mycology and the material generation that could come from our attention is huge. If you are willing to risk, invest in technologies associated with this breakthrough. Use our gains to assist the animals that will need in the aftermath.
If raised from the birth he/she can get attachted. Lovely animal , greatly underestimated.
Please, please let me know how to invest in your company. This is the 5th industrial revolution. Thank you for all of your work.
❤
Flammability
So they get sheets of paper/cardboard or felt and inoculate it with mycelium, hmmmm interesting.
Let me know when it’s as tough as kangaroo hide. Not that I'd ever use kangaroo hide, I just want extremely tough faux leather
Hey if it lets me get a jacket that looks great but doesn't kill me in the wallet, I am all for it.
Why aren’t they bringing this to hands of Iris Van Herpen or Alexander McQueen to create fashion and acknowledge masses of this revolutionary material already. This could slowly eliminate the use of leather entirely.
This is what science is all about!..

So they have a patent on a mushroom? If so, that doesnt seem right. If not, good.
They have a patent for turning mushrooms into leather.
It’s all about the money not the environment, be honest.
And if you suck on your shoes, you'll get high!!!!

Okay, so where can I get my hands on this mushroom, or am I going to have to pirate your bullshit chromosome copyright?
Bacterial Lives Matter!
... Mycelia too
all this is doing is making more waste from cows we don't farm cows for leather you said if your self leather is a byproduct
no, you're wrong. it's an alternative that will assist to phase out animal farming.

I like this but it does not save lives of cattle. No one kills cattle strictly for hides.
