You'd have an even larger market if you were able to get it to look and act (carve/tool) like vegetable tanned leather. I use veg tanned leather every now and then to make sheaths for the knives I make. The smooth, solid colors as well as the very clean and crisp patterns/images you can stamp or carve in it make it very nice to work with, not to mention it can also be molded into almost any shape and remain firm afterwards.

TinaWavelet I Can’t wait either to buy my first pair of Muskin boots!. 20% of the profits of a farmed Animal is in its skin, so when this hits the market it will make Animal farming unprofitable, no business can take a 20% drop in sales esp the dairy industry with all its disease from factory farming!.

The ‘Muskin’ ( Fungi Leather) has ALL the properties and strengths as Animal skin, it can be stitched in same way as leather, it is water proof, anti bacterial, breathable. I'm not so sure. The reason why leather from cows even exist and is continuing is that it is an extra resource from slaughtering cows for its meat. If they focus on this type of resource what would happen to the excess cow skin from slaughter houses in acquiring the meat from the cow?

This approach already proves that you can convince people to different methods over the old ones, rather then forcing people to change..
Forcing people to do anything won't help, it only creates the negativity for people to stay the way they are.
Changing the established mindset is hard..

It's the "stupid vegan complaints" that are the driving force behind this kind of innovation. Without the vegans you hate so much, there would be no demand for an environmentally-friendly alternative to leather. But go ahead and heap hate on vegans. Of course vegans are the problem, not the factory-farm industry that tortures and kills defenseless animals every single minute and those who happily support it with their hard-earned money.

There's nothing quite like leather from a good tannery.
That said, most of the leather used in the fashion/clothing industry is complete crap. It's also made with plastic finish and bonders, little better than petroleum-based leather alternatives.
Synthetic leather alternatives are better as car interiors than real leather.
I really hope that plant or fungus-based alternatives like this take the place of the vast majority of leather used on earth.
And then the food industry catches up so they don't have the excuse of leather just being a by-product. I realize that might take longer.

  • @MissDrawable

the only thing that kinda stinks is the lack of transparency on how its made, you can't expect stuff like this to ever take off unless you give access on how to make this for -everyone-
Especially considering that at the very worst impact to the business is that you have people making better versions or learning how to do it more sustainable, which should always be your goals when it comes to eco friendly solutions

They are not commodities, they were not put in this earth for us to abuse for our own benefit. Its that simple.

People still eat beef. She's leaving that out. Not using a beef cow's leather, or a milking cow's leather would be a waste and even more would be "thrown away". Second, I doubt any of the real leather gets thrown away. They usally put leftover cowparts into dog food. The process of tanning is a different story. Mushroom leather is a good idea, but don't throw beef skin to waste.

Too bad it doesn't work and is naught but a pipedream.
The company exists since 2013, now 2 years after this video were she claims they can compete there are still exactly 0 products using their supposed material. And the reason is simple: cause it doesn't work.
It is pathetically easy to produce leather imitates, but it is extremely difficult to create a material with similar or better characteristics. The reason why we use leather is precisely because it is such a great material.
Same as we will not magically find things to replace steel, concrete or glass.

  • @jamesguenes1695

70% of the hide isn’t thrown away. And for all you saying you hate the leather industry, stop eating meat then. Its the same industry. She also didn’t say it was as durable cow hide. This isn’t them doing something great for the earth. This is them finding a way to make cheap faux leather and put a spin on it so it sells better. It won’t affect how much leather we make because we still have the need for cattle farms.

    • @gadnihasj
      @gadnihasj 6 лет назад +3

Kevin McBigPP On another video, it was said that the demand for leather is higher than the supply, so inventing new faux leathers seems to be a good solution. That way we'll avoid overproducing meat to an even larger degree than we already do, just to get more leather.

Yes, if you're a meat eater who supports the unspeakable, horrific cruelty that the factory-farm industry engages in with your hard-earned dollars because you feel your taste buds and habits are more important than the lives of living beings, it would be hypocritical of you to wear mushroom leather. Some of us, however, have a problem with the idea of torturing and killing animals. Some of us have been waiting for an environmentally-friendly alternative to leather for decades.

Higher demand than supply, idiot. All the leather from those cows could get used (And it isnt, by the way) and not fill the market's desires.
This wont waste cow leather, the meat industry does that just fine on it's own.
This product means the demand can actually be met.
Fuck the vegan/non-vegan arguments, all of that is irrelevant in the face of your overwhelming stupidity right from the start.

I like this but it does not save lives of cattle. No one kills cattle strictly for hides.
