Thank you Dr. Peterson. I was drifting through life and had no purpose or meaning I have found my meaning in my life with your teachings and other great minds. I am over 8 months sober now and about to complete my first semester of school.
@Posey Von Lang First off, I like the video on your channel, well done. Second however, Psychology is not a pseudoscience. Clinical Psychologists aren't fortune tellers, or crystal healers. They talk with their patients about problems they have in their life, or traumatic events in some cases that has left mental "damage" so to say, in an attempt to help their patient get past that event, or to help them improve relationships, or outlook on life. They treat/council patients with mental illnesses as well, just as medical doctors treat patients with physical ailments. It is not the goal of a good psychologist to manipulate their patient, but to strengthen them mentally against the struggles of life. You don't have to call him Dr., but that is his actual prefix, not Mr. I hope that clarifies.
@Posey Von Lang you call him a dickhead just because he was wrong about a damn prefix. jeez man. you should go see someone about that pessimistic attitude. how do you expect to progress if you live in a state where you think everyone is out to get you? of course, you likely think i’m out to get you with this comment. i can assure you that i’m not. you really sound like a genuinely educated person, but it is a necessity that you change this negative realist outlook. i understand the realist pov, i have it too. but you’re letting negativity and false belief overcome your perception of reality, and it seems like it’s really hurting you. i can’t say this for certain, but from your comment(s), that’s what i’m perceiving.

He is the person that plays important role in my self-discovery journey. Thank man for your contribution. I come across your lectures on RUclips for more than a year as I can remember. You are more helpful than many many other motivational videos and speakers.
i work for a lot off older folks.i love them .sometimes i imagine that if i was an evil monster, how easy it would be to knock them on the head and take the money and run but i see that i am doing this mental exercise as a defense to think what i might do in their defense.
i think meaning ( and therefore value as persuing something of value is meaningfull ) is inherently linked to conciousness. Value needs a concious determiner. Only values that keep the line of valueholder going are the most valueable. anything that benefits conciousness, as the essence of being value sharing, is meaningfull. every value system springs from conciousness necessarily, so values can not be seperated from it. therefore values can only be determined in relation to living and concious beings and death itself can not be a value. This is functional independant of there being a god or not, as god would be concious and humans are concious. The necessity of a valueholder sets boundaries for values in what is compatible with continued conciousness in the universe. An unbound god would still value novelty, so he can maximise his own conciousness through observation. Creating a limited universe to perceive would be valueable for such a god, because this god already perceived all limitlessness. Concioussness prerequisits values, which are therefore actualy there, so value is valuable. By conciousness determining value, conciousness is valueable as a prerequisite for value. it is a cycle. maximising conciousness and maximising value are the same, and inherently meaningfull. Meaning without life is a paradoxic question, as noone could ask it from this position and when somebody asks it from within life, there is automatic value through it, and therefore meaning.
I have seen people upset and venting about Dr. Peterson. About his following, and his ideas. And it usually boils down to the idea that what he is saying is either banal and ordinary, or proposes a morality that is too Christian, or too defensive of ideas that those individuals don’t like. Often the individual appears to be intelligent, and verbose, and they probably have to be somewhat so, to get to the point where they actually found and watched the thing. The thing I see missed by these individuals when they comment, and by many others is that these ideas aren’t genius. And you shouldn’t like them based on their reconfirmation of your beliefs. They are notable for being earnest in finding the Wisdom of these old thoughts, and newer analyses of the world, and it’s people, and tying it together. Bridging the gap between the fathers and the sons. The ancients, and the contemporary. And it addresses issues society has in that many of these ideas were not truly lived by our fathers, or they were not taught earnestly or honestly, when they were taught. And the hypocrisy showed. And the idea that they had any value to us was not communicated, let alone showed to be effective in their lives. And so Jordan begins hammering out descriptions of the world, and maps how parts of the world function. How we function. And realizes the Wisdoms of those before us, and how they work. And that isn’t some great genius. You can do it if you learned how to think in those terms. And you should. Instead folks sneer at its simplicity and reception. Or esteem it as unattainable genius. When really it is just one man devoting himself and career to understanding these things, and looking for how they work and apply. Which is apparently uncommon now. Much repressed in modern times. Where nihilism is gospel truth. And why shouldn’t it be if what is claimed as true is done so by shallow wretches, the delusional, or by liars and thieves? Well maybe it’s time someone like you and I, or anyone who’s seen the truth of this to not only speak it, but show the truth of it in our lives.

Short answer: Because objectively, there is no meaning to life. So we all have to lie to ourselves and create a subjective one to be able to justify the suffering of life to ourselves.
I think it's more that the universe is pure complexity and information and we need a way to narrow that down in a manner that helps us live the longest and most comfortably. Assigning meaning to actions means we can sort them. We can try to assign the most meaning to the things that decrease suffering the most and prolonge living the most.
The internal structure of the potential for existence is sufficient to necessarily cause reality to exist in the actual. That is, the relationship between the potential for existence and actual existence persists in the very same reciprocal, recursive and mutually dependent way that all dualities are grounded. There is no reality without potential-there is no potential without reality. Potentiality is infinite; actuality is infinitesimal; both are essentially neutral, but their separation is what generates our finite world of things.
After long time of listening to professor & doesn't understand a da. n thing I realize something which is his comforting voice regardless of what he says. It is like u watch a MMA match b/w his knowledge & a dumb brain!
Beautiful video. . I didn’t have anything else to say about it until just before the end, but then I came up with something. I wondered if I had also just watched the ball, or if I had taken a split second off in between to watch the rest and might have seen the gorilla^^ Provided that I had found that I could take the time I needed without making a mistake, then I might have done so. I guess I figured that out because I’m generally fixated on discovering manipulation, curiosity is of course also a reason. Wherever there is interest in something not being seen, the world is rotated faster or demanded that one remain focused on something. Therefore, no one should just let others tell you what to focus on.
As much as your videos and books are immensely helpful, maybe you could also help people by doing a special where you allow people to phone in and you help them with tailored advise. Kind of like what Ben Shapiro and Dave Ramsey do. Just a though. Thank you :)
Hello Dr Peterson Watching you Lecture on ( How we perceive Life) Is it possible not too see Any of my life as it really is. It’s not the persona we see but What we think that is the real Person Hope you are continuing Your recovery Give my regards Too your family 💎
I have been thinking about this a lot lately and I am wondering what others think. Does anyone have a beat on Dr. Peterson’s meta ethics? I am no expert, but I feel as though he is a non cognitivist. Basically that we can not understand morality as matters of fact in the objective sense. This does not mean that these things are false though (error theory?) I am just looking to see what others think about this.
I feel like I’ve missed the point, how does this explain why we need meaning in life? This is a serious question because I’m really trying to figure out what I find meaningful so that I can pick a career that is going to be meaningful to me
We need meaning in life at a practical level to develop values so we can decide what to do hour to hour and day to day. The alternative is nihilism and despair. He is arguing that meaning is a first order instinct, not a construct or product of thought. There are different physiological queues that indicate you are in a meaningful moment, such as losing track of time and resistance to distraction. If you need a place to start, know that you find meaning in progression, so constantly setting small achievable goals in pursuit of a larger goal is a good start. It's about maintaining a rate of positive change in the different aspects of your life (he calls them pillars), and the more you learn about yourself the better tuned your rate will be. This is his 'one foot in chaos and one foot in order is where you find meaning' and why he's always bringing up old stories describing confronting the unknown.
Having meaning in what you do(career) can be simple mental shift in how you see the world. You're assuming your interest won't change, what you find meaningful now is the same later. Your curiosity of finding purpose is why I know you will have meaningful life. That is something certain, when? No one knows. Life should be framed like it's a journey and what you pursue is something that may never be fulfilled or achieved. As you realize that you are where you need to be and life isn't a destination. When you start to see that the answer was within not outter factors. Only then you can feel fulfilled in life and meaning of life will have different meaning to you.
I'm going to be honest with you I went through a existential crisis in 2018- 2019 now I believe in extensionalism don't go down the path I went through
Is it just me who't too dumb to understand how this relates to the title? Is it because Simon said so? Is Simon a representation of god or something? Does a meaning in life equal to doing the things we're being told to do in return for being able to pat yourself on the back? That seems sad
If you are new to Jordan Peterson then you might be misunderstanding his ideas. His book 12 Rules for Life is a great starting point to get his fundamental ideas told in an accessible manner. I'd highly recommend it.
A life without goals is chaos and suffering. You need goals and pursuing them gives you positive emotions. Meaning tells you the goals. Example: One meaningfual goal is getting and raising children. It's very hard and a lot of work. You need to take a lot of responibility on your shoulders. But almost every human agrees that it's worth it. Other goals are not that obvious. Without meaning you are cluesless and may only pursue happines. Thats the way to misery.

Jesus didn't exist bro, nobody will save you when die. Be a good person because it's the right thing to do, not for some perceived salvation.

Jesus didnt exist? According to who?

First, it's "whom". Second, anyone with intelligence, who is not part of that cult. There is no non-Bible proof Jesus exists.

Very nice introduction
Short answer: Because objectively, there is no meaning to life. So we all have to lie to ourselves and create a subjective one to be able to justify the suffering of life to ourselves.
I think it's more that the universe is pure complexity and information and we need a way to narrow that down in a manner that helps us live the longest and most comfortably. Assigning meaning to actions means we can sort them. We can try to assign the most meaning to the things that decrease suffering the most and prolonge living the most.
awesomedavid2012 And sometimes, what reduces suffering and what prolongs living is mutually exclusive 😉.

Friend, do you *really* believe that with every fiber of your being?
@@Belief_Before_Glory Yupp. And if you can’t see why, you’ve listened to too much of Peterson’s Gish Gallop. Been there, done that.

Beautiful video. .
I didn’t have anything else to say about it until just before the end, but then I came up with something.
I wondered if I had also just watched the ball, or if I had taken a split second off in between to watch the rest and might have seen the gorilla^^
Provided that I had found that I could take the time I needed without making a mistake, then I might have done so.
I guess I figured that out because I’m generally fixated on discovering manipulation, curiosity is of course also a reason.
Wherever there is interest in something not being seen, the world is rotated faster or demanded that one remain focused on something.
Therefore, no one should just let others tell you what to focus on.
We don't see the world, we see a low resolution tolerable and functional iconic representation or map of the world.
As much as your videos and books are immensely helpful, maybe you could also help people by doing a special where you allow people to phone in and you help them with tailored advise. Kind of like what Ben Shapiro and Dave Ramsey do. Just a though. Thank you :)

i like the video but the question was not answered. why we need meaning in life
I have been thinking about this a lot lately and I am wondering what others think.
Right when you think you understood something, you realize it's just the intro to the talk
Me rn

So what was the meaning of life jp was getting at in this video ?
This talk could have been 3 minutes.
Clickbait title.
@@mannysmandatories5595 if you are computer, than yes. Maybe JP is not human.
@Holo,no and his book is also crappy.
I am blind to you
35 minutes but only 17 minutes what q joke 🤬 most of it was why people are there what a waste of a clip
