  • Mamadou was born with bilateral cataracts and slowly got worse as he got older. For seven years, he struggled with simple actions, like walking and picking up objects. He was also teased and provoked by the other children in his village.
His mother had little success in finding medical help until the #GlobalMercy arrived in Sierra Leone, and Mamadou, aged seven, was finally able to receive the ophthalmic surgery he needed on board!
This lifesaving surgery was time-sensitive as without it Mamadou would never be able to regain his sight. “If we do surgery after ten years, the result will not be so good because he will have severe amblyopia. If the cataracts are not removed soon enough, the brain can never learn to see, ” said Dr.
Rudalevicius, the volunteer ophthalmic surgeon, who operated on Mamadou
The two hour operation made a lifelong impact as it represented the start of a new vision and future for Mamadou
