  • One of the most adaptable fighters of the fourth generation, the legendary Super Hornet can really do it all. Fighter, striker, electronic attacker and even tanker, whoever said a "jack of all trades is a master of none" has never seen a Rhino in action.

The RAAF has come along way in the last 20 years in the field of Electronic Warfare. With the acquisition of Growlers, G-550’s, SIGINT specific Poseidon’s and Drones together with a large ground force support base, the RAAF’s surveillance capability has truly matured. If enough open source material exists, I’m sure your viewers would be very interested in your views and doing a segment on the subject.

Super Hornet really seems like the Hornet that reached its realistic peak performance. I wonder what would've been possible with the Tomcat if it was given similar treatment, in the proposed Super Tomcat 21.

The tomcat could have been at least equally as good. The problem with the tomcat was and alway will be the amount of mechanical parts and the maintenance required to keep those parts flying.

@@uranzajmi6466 Super Hornet my firend. Even the advnaced F-16s like a Block 60 are basically worse in every way. The F-16 is a better sustained dog fighter; it has a better thrust to weight ratio and sustained turn rate. But in every other way the Super Hornet is better. Bigger radar aperture, lower RCS, more weapons stations. I think the SH would win in a BVR fight most of the time. WVR? Its a toss up. If the F-16 can survive the first few turns it would have the advantage, but teh SH would probably get the first shot off, all things being equal.

Also gonna point out some inaccuracies, the F-14 was a fighter aircraft, designed around the lessons learned in vietnam, they took up the fleet defense role due to the powerful radar and AIM-54. They were still capable fighter aircraft but due to the cold war were more seen as interceptors

The impetus for the F-14 began well before Vietnam. The AWG-9/AIM-54 system predated the F-14 airframe and had been in development for a decade prior to the F-14's first flight even. As the US encountered Soviet lightweight fighters over Vietnam, requirements were added to the USAF and USN new fighter/interceptor programs to be able to enjoy energy-maneuverability advantages against the MiG-21. They would need to do this while still reaching a 500nm combat radius, which was a tall order.
The Navy's prime spec list was for a fleet defense interceptor though, since the F-4B/AIM-7E was being challenged by the Tu-22M/Kh-22.

An f/A-18E/F with 12 AMRAAM 120D is a better interceptor than the F-14 with AIM-54. The F/A-18E/F can actually bring back all of its AMRAAM compared to the F-14 which almost never carry 6 AIM-54 and certainly can't bring back 6 AIM-54 due to the weight of the AIM-54 and have to eject at least one or two to land! Also the AIM-120D is likely more capable and more advanced than the AIM-54 in real combat situations

    • @keirfarnum6811
      @keirfarnum6811 2 года назад +2

I doubt that. AMRAAMs never have the range they’re claimed to have. The high top end range is only from high altitude, high speed shots that are lobbed; realistic Fox3s never go as far as claimed. The AIM54 had range the AMRAAM will never have; even with its more primitive electronics. Imagine though an upgraded AIM54. Even Russian missiles outrange AMRAAMs these days (although they probably wouldn’t have many to use).

Super Hornet Pilots are taught how to kill Jets, and do in Training.
The US Navy uses The F-16C, and MIG-29’s in the ‘Aggressor’ Squadrons against Super Hornet crews. The ‘Aggressors’ are painted in Eastern European camouflage (Basically Russian schemes) that do looks good on Aggressor F-16’s, F-14’s, F/A-18A’s, F-5’s, and the MIGS. The Aggressors also use Russian/Eastern Flight Tactics, Philosophy, as well as US/Western Tactics.
These Pilots, (Hands down, Some of the absolute best on the planet) throw everything at Super Hornet crews possible to show them how to Fight, use your Advantages, and even use the enemy Pilots advantages against him, manipulate him, learn to understand the Psychology of him.
Make them earn any kill and give that Crew/Pilot the tools and confidence to come out on top.

Should the RAAF A and D model Hornets be converted to unmanned drones for the wingman role carrying weapons to support F-35s and Super Hornets? Also for recon and protecting AWACs, Poseidon P-8s and tankers. Or attacking targets found by the AWACS and Poseidon's. More of the older F-18s could also come from the US. Australia has the infrastructure and skills to maintain hornets. Much of the training could be simulated. F-35's and Hornet drones could be a very deadly combination. The fly-by-wire systems could help in turning the F-18s to drones. And simulated training would reduce the air time for the old air-frames. They also have radars and data sharing systems. Super Hornet pilots could be used to operate the drones. Buddy tanks could also be used to refuel Super Hornets. And what is happening with the old PC3 Orions? Can they still play a role. Having small level operations that could be available for future conflicts and keeping them sustainable.

Overall a very good technical assessment of a system but lost its way a couple of times with fanboy stuff.
The claim that its an air superiority fight at 7:12 is just simply wrong. The 'F/A' instead of 'F' gives that away. Genuine air superiority fighters have the 'F' designation like the F-4, F-14, F-15 and F-22. The F/A for Fighter Attack all have compromises so they can do that dual role.
Its a fundamental part of all engineering irrespective of industry or task that when you broaden the scope of any system it forces compromises. Planes like the F/A-18 and F-35 will never match the air superiority capabilities of the F-15 & F-22 because the F-15 & F-22 were designed as uncompromised AS systems while the F/A18 & F-35 were designed as multi-role systems.
But overall his technical details are, yet again, first class.

He is revealing very interesting things about Hitler‘s private life. It‘s in German and there is no offical translation (I couldn‘t find one), so if you‘re interested in it, I could translate the most Important things he said

Because of its lackluster thrust to weight ratio, its nowhere near as good at BVR combat as new models of the F16 and F15

  • @bryanrussell6679

The super hornet still needs better engines. A twin engine american fighter jet shouldn't be inferior to the single engine F-16 in thrust to weight ratio. But then again, the F-16 is setting the bar high.

@@corvanphoenix I don't think you understand how a fox-2 dogfight works, the high alpha in compilation with the high off-boresight capabilities means the f16 can try to stiff-arm the f18 in a 2 circle but won't matter because the hornet can just saddle up much quicker and sit inside the vipers turn circle. That's how it works after the merge

Great review, it’s a shame the Aust Govt and Airforce wankers don’t see the potential of the Hornet, cheaper to operate, increased sortie availability over that crappy F35. Aust should have just got another 50 of these and then upgraded to the advanced super hornet when it becomes available

He's reading from old databases though. The US is stopping all development for the super hornets by 2030s. Boeing won't be developing fighter jets anymore either how they going to keep the upgrade after 2030s?
The US is developing the 6th generation (NGAD) fighter it will replace the F35C and superhornets. The suggestion too keep the superhornets flying till 2050 is old news. And has changed since the new announcement from Boeing and the US pentagon. Australia has to change the superhornets by 2030s or run into snags to keep them upgraded and left vulnerable to by left with a fighter jet that is no longer capable in combat

In effect you have spelt out that If Australia had to go American then this is the platform we should have continued with, not the fancy F-35 which is not as versatile and has only one engine. I understand that the 18's air frame now has a life of 10,000 hours and with the US continuing to improve the platform for it's own purposes, which are similar to our requirements, then it should have been a no brainer.
But politics and poor decision making instead had us subsidising the US's special requirements, which are different to ours, so we end up with the expensive everything F-35.

Actually, the F35 can outperform the F18, of all models. It can out turn, out accelerate, out climb, fly further, carry more and compared to the hornet can hardly be seen and has a much more modern and more powerful avionics suite. The only thing the hornet has over the F35 is a slightly higher top speed. However, the hornet hardly ever pushes to its top speed. It's supersonic acceleration performance is rather middling. In Red Flag exercises, the F35 took apart flights of USAF planes and Navy Super Hornets, when they were involved. The only plane that had any chance against it was the F22.
