You're most welcome Frank. I've had this and a sample of one of their other expressions. "Well made!" would be a description that would spring to mind.
      Slàinte buddy.

Appreciate you going over this one Jim. Wasn't aware of it to be honest and must say that anything that has a Campbeltown presence is worth keeping an eye on for me, though some of the herbal aspects are a bit outside of my preferred area. Cheers!

Cheers Drew. It's nice to find something outside of Scotland that has a very distinct Scottish regional feel.
It does sort of beg the question why these "world whiskies" don't have a more individual identity though.
I know it's only personal opinion but, I still feel like there are very specific pointers across whisky.
Good Irish single pot still has a flavour profile all its own. Bourbon and rye are independantly recognisable and, although it differs from region to region....single malt Scotch is a power-house profile that is hard to deviate from.
It makes one wonder why, by now, in this modern era, don't Swedish or French or Australian or Indian etc., etc., etc., whiskies, have profiles that scream Swedish, French, Australian, etc.? I don't believe it's just me that opens these whiskies and thinks "oh it reminds me of Glenfiddich/Springbank/Arran/*enter any Scotch whisky here*
I'm not complaining but, neither would I rush to buy whiskies from around the world that simply borrow from Scotch whisky moulds. That's also why I don't touch on a lot of Japanese whiskies.
Damn...I went off on one there 😄 sorry buddy. Not directed at you obviously. Just venting a bit.
      Cheers my friend.

@@WhiskeyNovice I am right there with you Jim, plus I got burned with Japanese whisky. When I do see a review of something I never see here, and it happens to be very much like something I know and love then it does go on my list. Such is one of the beauties of your reviews my friend ❤️

Just picked this up today; immediately got that Campbeltown funk on the nose. Enjoying it so far… Price for the Hav was $60 at my local bottle shop; about half the price of the Springbank 10 (when you can find it in stock 😢). Pretty good dram and a great review as always. Cheers!

Hi Jim, the only Swedish whisky I’ve had was from mackmyra, called Kungstorv( the kings peat). Everything Swedish, from the barley, oak, peat and the juniper branches. It was an IB and also herbal and menthol, shame it was only 43 % though. Sounds like a good dram though. Cheers Jim.

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  3 года назад

Cheers David. I've had a few Mackmyras now and found a couple of them to be good but, no better than that. I know they're very popular and I understand that but, I deffinately prefer what I've had from High Coast.

Watched this review whilst sipping a high coast timmer peat smoke, well worth a try I see the resemblance with Campbeltown although here the funk comes through as if coated in rich butter. Nice review might pick a hav up soon.

Another new one for me, so I really appreciate the exposure. I was not sure this would be my thing until you added water and then the notes sounded good. For the cost, I think I'll be waiting to try this one. It is good to know you prefer High Coast as a good example of Swedish whisky. Also, Glen Scotia and SB10 are favorites, so that comparison makes me more interested. Great review, Jim.

Cheers Bud. One to try if you see it in a bar my friend. I wouldn't rush out looking for a bottle. It has good character but...so do a lot of Scotch NASs at half the price..

I'm happy you covered this distillery Jim...."Hav" is nice, but I prefer the "Timmer" (slightly peated) & of course Springbank 10 yo but they're different...I'm curious of your thoughts on that one...Cheers !

Had the timmer and the dalvve and enjoyed both a lot. Definitely a distillery that’s doing good things and I hope will find a bit of a following like Mackmyra. Great notes! Cheers Jim!

The High Coast- Dalvve sherry influence is really good and it's lightly peated and the sherry on it is great. It reminds me of old bottlings of Highland Park 12. They only made 3000 bottles of it and half of it went to U.S. I got it here for $50 in California and I went and bought two more after I opened the first one. it's too bad it was a one and done because you can taste how good the sherry casks they were using and this is only a 6 to 7 year old. I was highly impressed and I hear the Berg is really good and it's PX casks. Tough to get their sherry cask versions because they are so much better and people found out about it and bought it up.

Very interesting Jim. I have been going back and forth on trying Swedish whiskies. Price is making me hesitant. Wonder what they'll be like when they get a little older, say 10-12 years. Can find High Coast where I am pretty readily so I will probably pull the trigger at some point. Love these world whisky reviews. Cheers.

Personally I think they are too expensive. On the standard bottlings Berg, Hav, Timmer, Älv, they’ve reduced the size of the bottles to 50cl but kept the price the same. So +40% price increase (if my math is correct) their first 10 year old is coming soon and it will be over €160 for 50cl. I like what they are producing and their transparency but they are too expensive for me. A bit sad about that actually.

Got one for €35 ($40) and at that price it's splendid, in my opinion totally a Glen Scotia 15 contemporary in flavor. Bourbon-ey scotch with funk and peat, does it get better?

Great review as always, Jim. Personally, I haven't tried this yet, but I really enjoyed Mackmyra- especially Gront Te and the Reserve America Oak offering at 55.2% ABV. It was smokey on the nose, but tasted like bacon fries, and who doesn't like bacon fries?
