I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re slowly plasticizing & automating ourselves into our cyborg analogs. It would be an efficient way to ie go extinct from a material standpoint, but/and humans are so destructive, it’s hard not to see how the planet might benefit from this, as creepy as it is. As an alternative to other ways to go extinct like the trajectory we’re on with the planet’s temp or war, etc, it might also be a gentler way to be phased out. I’m not that ‘optimistic’ that we can refrain from our destructive tendencies long enough for that route, though.
