Thanks for the great videos. I would like to know something about distance and discreet diode spacing in relation to how close you can hang lights to the canopy. If you have a light that is say 500w and you hang it 3 ft above the canopy to get a specific spread of the light, say a 4' x4' coverage, and you have an average par of some given # at that height could you take those same diodes and spread them over say a 4' x 4' space and lowered them to say about 8" over the canopy would/could you achieve the same par but have a more uniform coverage of the space. I am using par , could be photon but the basic question remains. Is this a good idea to pursue?

hello growmau5 I watched your videos and am very enthusiastic about your LED lamps. Now I would like to build something for my 1.20x1.20 tent (1.44m2). Now there are several problems. 1. I don't speak English (Google Translater). 2. I understand even less about electronics. 3. Are there sure to be new LED technologies and new findings from you? would be cool if you could make a video for dummies

Im building 6x lights each with 4x CXB3590 3000k 90cri 36v cobs. Was going to use Meanwell HLG-240H-C1750B for each 4x assembly. Rated current V is at 143v on the driver, and the 4x cobs at 144v.
Do you think i would get away with this or is it just too close? :)

Thank you, I've watched all your videos in the DIY tutorial, thanks for the information, it was REALLY helpful. Still wondering about one thing. You choose 3500k over 3000k because of the lumen drop and the fact that 3500k is better suited for veg state. I wonder if you would make a light aimed at flowering only the 3000k might be a better choice based on the offered spectrum. The lumen drop might be compensated by the spectrum. If you look at tneon lights, grow lights are around 6000k, but the flowering lights are 2700k. Any thoughts on that?

1st. of all you are the SHIT!!
2nd. can you do it for a 4x4 so I can replace my 600 HID
3rd. I understand how to run the drivers to the cobs. My biggest confusion is connecting say 2 or 3 drivers together so I can plug it into the wall and not fear burning my house down.

+growmau5 Also interested in a 4x4/16sqft build. Maybe in both a cost effective (8x chip + 2x driver?) and a full-on efficiency build (12x + 3x, or a 16x something?). Trying to find a cost effective way to introduce others to COB LED, and most interest seems to be in the 4x4 tent size.

Hey man. I'm looking to build a light for a black orchid Geno box of size 50x100x50cm. Looking to create something like a T5 setup across the top but with LEDs of course. There's not much height in the tent so would need to be a low profile, Max efficiency, low heat, par output of maybe 400 just for keeping cacti and succulents compact over winter. Would love to hear your thoughts. I'm new to building but I used to build drones back in the day so have a decent enough knowledge to work from. Is it possible to do this stuff without soldering? Sick of that stuff after building drones as you can imagine ha.

You confused me with the driver examples, you speak of a different one than shown, Then you say HLG can't run in series without blowing all cobs. Then you show how to run in parallel, but say you don't use that set up. Kind of wish you just explained the facts of what you use. What parts do I need to buy to build what you currently use. I know you give a parts list in S2:E2 . Most of us get confused when you throw in variables & optional "you could do this, I didn't but you could" scenarios. I barely wrap my head around ohms law. Just looking at the models and sizes of HLG drivers is confusing on different sites. What to stay away from?36V & below?
But definitely thank you for your videos, probably most informative videos on led understanding on youtube even if I personally have to watch each one 10 times.

I have a 7'x 6' room and a 12' x 7' room that I am turning in to a grow space. I have been slowly purchasing my LED panels but I want to make my own. What type of panel would work best and how many? I am having a hard time finding panels that have more that just red and blue so I mix with T8s. One of my panels that have all the colors is blown out and it cost 500.00 each. I am trying to understand how this stuff works so I can fix it. When I opened the panel up all the identifying numbers were scratched off :(

  • @jameshare1848

    What is the PAR watts/efficiency equation? What is the difference between running 2 x 72v chips @ 700ma Vs 4 x 36v @ 1400ma?

    • @Anastasia419
      @Anastasia419 6 лет назад

They are the same efficiency at any given wattage. For example, four CXB3590 36v COBs ran at 1400mA and four 72v COBs ran at 700mA are both pulling 200W, are 51% efficient and produce the same amount of PARw.

    Hey man, awesome videos!
    I have a question...If I connect 10 x 22.5V; 480mA; LED stripes, can I use a HLG-185H-C700A to run them all serial and most important savely? It'S for a space of 100x60 cm
    LED Stripes:

Otherwise I think I could connect them with 5 smaller drivers, who each runs two of the stripes..
What's the better option in your opinion ?

Also 2x12v LEDs in series makes for 24vf

Hi growmau5. Just wonder if you could address some of these criticisms of COB LEDs. It's taken from the Spectrum King website. Thanks.
    C.O.B Myth
There are only three reasons to choose a C.O.B. LED:
Reduce the cost of materials to make the LED
Save money by eliminating the need for circuit boards
Group more LED diodes into one small area
Standard self-contained diodes are the leading LEDs in the industry and have performances that are double that of C.O.B. LEDs. Every LED that claims to be 10, 20, 50 or even 100 watts is a C.O.B.
C.O.B. lights offer lower efficiency and overall light output. By adding and cramming more diodes into a tight array that share the same substrate, heat becomes a big issue. As the C.O.B.’s run hotter, they:
    Emit fewer lumens
    Have a lower efficiency
    Develop a shorter lifespan

how far are we away from the next advancement?200 lumens per watt and beyond.? and will someone be producing a system to match the latest white led.? will it be a mix of different colour temps or just a couple like 3k and 4k.? i would buy a 12x36 inch panel today if i could source one.maybe a program dimmable one like medgrowers.i would include a wider variety of whites possibly ranging from 3k to 7k.PLEASE MAKE A COMMERCIAL VERSION.white led rocks.i think they can out perform a de hps but not sure it makes a difference during flower as i believe the hard work is done in veg.id love a consistent led light source if it did the whole job.you are proof it works..how come more people aint producing them commercially.?

Hello, I have a question about drivers and cobs. Lets say I am running 4 citizen clu48 1212 on a hlg-240h-c1750. It has a output voltage of 143 however, the cobs require 144. will the driver fail me, or is there a margin on these things?

  • @Lightja_

if a COB says 36V, how do we know it's actually 34-35? If we went strictly based on the numbers, we'd have to assume it can only fit 3, so how are we supposed to know that it can actually fit 4? Also, based on the LED efficiency droop, which says as current increases efficiency decreases, wouldn't the 72V COBs run at 700mA be more efficient than the 36V COBs run at 1400mA? Is there any advantage to parallel wiring if we did want to go with the advanced method and use fuses / resistors /etc?

Any advantage of wiring series/parallel..?? Each pair wired separably in a series, then the two series wired parallel to the driver... Would this give more flexibility in choosing drivers or amount of LED's run on one driver..?? Brain knot..??

  • @Robinsonhuplake

a common tent size in the eu is a 1mx1m and the cobs should replace the 600w hps I see most people use in this set up. my guess is 2x 4 3590 1400ma 200w (total 8x 3590 =400w led)
maybe in 3-2-3 placement with the passive pin-heatsinks,in combination of warm and cool spectrum and extended cord so the drives can be mounted outside of the room
If possible with the 80/20 Mounting rail instead of the L shaped alu

Hey bud, thank you for the great videos. one thing you didn't explain, which I'm a bit confused about it the ma relation to v. I watched and tried to follow on of your first videos and purchased the Meanwell HLG185h-c500b with the cxb2530's. I tried to place just one LED on the driver, which worked for a while but then when I turned it off it didn't want to turn back on and then suddenly blew the LED. Is this a problem with over driving the LED?
That driver only has a ma of 500 instead of what you were suggesting of 1400? but has a lot more volage output. Can you explain why you went this way on the older video? and how can I understand how many I can put on the driver? I would prefer to not blow any more COB's if I can help it :)

i have an 8x8 greenhouse, but I want to be able once the sun isn't promoting adequate photosynthesis to run some LED's to complete the 18/6 cycle. Using what I can from the sun for those wavelengths that NO artificial light can reproduce, however it is almost September so I'm switching the lights on at 1815 and cutting them off at around 0015. I have to check what time sunrise is but you get it..

I HAVE A QUESTION FOR A BUILD THAT A LOT OF "DIY PEOPLE" MIGHT ALSO BE HAVING.
*** EVERYONE PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST ANY ANSWERS, HELPFUL INFO.
SO MY QUESTION IS ABOUT WHEN USING THOSE "SMART COBS" (THOSE DIY LEDS THAT EACH HAVE IT'S OWN DRIVER BUILT IN TO THE COB ITSELF SO NO SEPERATE DRIVER IS REQUIRED) THEY COME IN DIFFERENT TYPES LIKE- PUSH WIRE CONNECTIONS OR SOLDER STYLE, & ALSO EITHER 120V OR 220V, & ALSO CHOICE OF DIFFERENT SPECTRUMS.
SO I AM USING THE 120 VOLT (I'M IN USA) "PUSH-IN-WIRE" TYPE, I HAVE A FEW "FULL SPECTRUMS" & A FEW "WHITES"(I FORGET SPECIFIC COLOR TEMP, THIS DOESN'T EFFECT WIRING AT ALL)
****--WHEN WIRING MULTIPLE ONES TOGETHER CAN I JUST WIRE THESE IN "SERIE'S" AS USUAL? OR ***DOES IT CHANGE ANYTHING BECAUSE OF EACH COB HAVING IT'S OWN LITTLE PERSONAL, INDIVIDUAL DRIVER, ETC?
***ALSO HOW MANY TOTAL CAN BE SAFELY WIRED TOGETHER ALL ON THE SAME SINGLE PLUG?
THANK YOU FOR ALL ANSWER'S, REPLYS, & HELP!!!

ok so i have 4 luxeon deep red 1 up leds per strand/light a 3w/700ma each totalling 12w of draw per light fixture x2 so a total of 24w at 700ma,
ill be using a mean well APC-35-700 too run 2 fixtures/separate strands with 4 leds each my question is will it be a problem if i solder the positive/negative wires from both lights/strands together & then solder these to the single positive/negative wires coming off the driver ?
will this work ? or am i better off going with 1 driver per light ..
    thanks in advance much appreciated.
great work has clarified a lot on diy leds.

This may not be the place to ask this, but it's where I am when thinking of it, so here goes: Can a COB span over a t-slot in a heatsink, such as the one found here: www.heatsinkusa.com/8-460-led-t-slots/ ? I understand all about thermal pastes, pads, etc., I'm just wondering about having a 1/8" "channel" through the middle of the COB that isn't as well sinked as the rest of it is. Using a pad, vs. paste or epoxy, would at least allow for some sinking, I suppose, so that's probably the best approach, should it prove viable. What are your thoughts? Oh... and thanks for taking the time to make these vids. Takes me back to my electronics schooling (which began before the days of integrated circuits... and yes, I've actually used a rotary dial phone.) ;-)

Why I can't make amount in series and turn them streigh to 220v?
I mean if I want to turn 800w Led a Led driver will be same price of Led... What can I make to get alternative for Led driver?
    Thanks for the teaching 😊

I'm new to the scene and just like any noob I'm eager. so eager I went out and bought myself three cxa2530 and a mean well CLG-150-36A driver. the mistake that I made is that these components are not compatible. the next mistake wiring the first light in parallel to my driver then connecting the next two lights in series with that light(pop). does anybody have any suggestions what I can run on this CLG-150 - 36a (constant current 4.2a) three lights in series this time. by the great video

Man, I don't really get your explanation of cob as eggs and the MeanWell driver as the egg box... I find it kind of confusing.
Even wiki says "Strings of multiple LEDs are normally connected in series. In one configuration, the source voltage must be greater than or equal to the sum of the individual LED voltages."
So I can only agree with your reasonning but I still don't get it, could you explain to me which law is behind that please ?

If a Cob can only handle 2.8 Amps what is the safe zone to push it when selecting a driver. I see you were saying 1.4 But If I want Brighter Lights a little bit warmer but still safe to operate would be ideal is 2 Amps Safe? In a 4-5 Cob Settup?

I am working on doing vertical grow towers and have not been able to find a light good for that. Especially LED(the ole school hanging HPS aside) Now I can make my own custom corn cob style kine LED where I can set 3 channels, One for bottom light on when I have the seedling in the center, one for back half light on,(for when the system is closed in the circle configuration) or for just front half on, for when I'm running the system open configuration. (like I am not due to space restrictions)

  • @danp762
    @danp762 8 лет назад

Hey, I like what you are doing. But you should explain the difference between constant current and constant voltage drivers. Because the problem you describe with LEDs in parallel would only happen with a constant current driver. With a constant voltage driver each LED works independently of each other. So, one burning out doesn't kill the others.

Wow this is excellent!! I want to build one!! I discovered Greengenes Garden's channel a few months ago and learned a lot from his diy cob led build. YOu probably know him. You really explain it well. What I would like to know is where you get all the components? Any source info would be great.

What if the total forward voltage of the LEDs are lower than the drivers voltage is ? Say 9LEDs*12V = 108Vbut the LED driver is 148V. Do I have to have the exact voltage from the driver to match the fV ?

Just as a hypothetical, could one use two hlg-185h-c1400's in parallel to achieve 2800mA for four 4 cxb3590 cobs assuming there is enough heatsinking? I looked at supras charts for cob driver matches and I was trying to find a good match for running the cobs harder. Thinking it'd be awesome if the drivers will work fine in parallel. You are the fucking man for these videos!

Not sure if it's been asked, is there any advantage to parallel wiring over series, or vice versa? Or is it just a different way to wire when having a different driver?
I am looking replace my 600 watt hps with something a little more efficient, but wanna rock the house.. as you say.
My grow area is a 6.5 ft x 13.5 ft room but use two nets that are about 4 ft square. So really it can be just about any size coverage.
I enjoy your channel and it helps a noob like me. I think I have the basics pretty much down thanks to you.

Ok, so here's a real back to basics question. In the beginning you talk about having a 'hot' wire on your AC current side. I thought the whole point of alternating current was that you don't have a 'hot' wire (or common wire, for that matter). What am I missing? Thanks.
