The goal for a master copy of a sketch is to practice the sketching method, not to recreate a perfect facsimile of the final image. Subtle but important difference! If I spent weeks using tiny brushes I could create a pixel-perfect copy of course, but I would learn nothing about how to integrate and apply the methodology in my own work.
Desire is more important than talent. Anyone can learn to play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata if they put in enough time and effort to learn. It just depends on how bad you want it.

I teach a complete online painting program at sadievaleriatelier.com where every step, every pigment, every material, every detail of every technique is shared and explained. My program is priced to be extremly affordable because I believe masterful art technique has been inaccessible for too long, but it is not free. I hope you can join us there!
Painted in 3 sessions, total of about 12 hours. Read all the details about how I painted it at www.sadievaleriatelier.com/post/master-copy-bouguereau-s-sketch-of-a-young-woman
I believe for Bouguereau it was alla prima, but for me the it was challenging, I took 3 separate sessions: Loose Umber underpainting, then two layers of overpainting.
I call it a sketch because likely for Bouguereau it was a sketch. For a more formal master copy I would do a careful drawing and transfer to get an exact copy. But I wanted to copy Bouguereau's process as best I could, not just make a copy of the final result.
He's not entirely wrong, although it could have been worded better. Your values are a tad darker than the original and if my observation is on point, you seem to have used a slightly more orange-ish red tone instead of a orange-ish yellow? I could be wrong so you can correct me on that! Either way, your copy is still gorgeous nonetheless! I hope to reach that level someday!
@@Sephylis-tl4ll I'm using Boug's pigments. There is a lot of variation in different ochres and umbers, they are dug out of the ground, not created in a lab. It would be easy to mix modern colors together to match the colors exactly, but Boug is using single-pigment colors and my goal is to follow his process. I don't copy masters just to make an exact replica of their final painting, I copy so I can learn from their methods and materials and process. The way to make an exact copy would be to mix up color swatches in advance and grid up/trace the outlines. But that's just copying a painting. I copy so I get better as a painter and I can learn and apply the method for all my future paintings.
@@SadieValeriAtelier I see! I never heard of Boug before! I'll have to check it out! Shows that I have a lot more of grinding to do during my own art journey! Thank you!
Love how soft you keep all the values in the beginning avoiding a precise 'drawing' - very beautiful
Thank you very much! I do love a precise drawing, but sometimes softness and generalities is a path to get there.

The velatura is key with Bouguererau. I find the transparency of lead white really helps.
I agree. I believe Bouguereau studied the work of Van Dyck, the original master of using transparency to great effect.
Really very beautiful - great painting :-)))

Yes I teach all levels at www.sadievaleriatelier.com/
Can these techniques be adapted to acrylic painting?
My understanding is acrylic dries too fast. This painting had "open" (wet) working time for about 4-6 hours per session (3 sessions).
@@SadieValeriAtelier You can get an acrylic retarder gel that slows down the very fast drying time. How that helps.
