This is where my mother spent her summers with her sister, father, and beloved servants prior to World War 2. Here they would spend there summers with my grandmother the Contessa Carolina Dinargole Bevilaqua. With the outbreak of World War 2 and the rise of Mussolini they had to abandon Italy and their beloved Ottagano. My mother speaks of the fruit trees that were on the island and the wonderful days that she would spend with her sister and boys from the Lido swimming and enjoying the island. It is amazing what they had to leave behind to come to America.

I have just read the second novel in Cecil Roberts' 'Pilgrim Cottage' trilogy published in 1938, and was entranced by the description of a Lagoon fort in 'The Guests Arrive'. Using Google Earth, I found the fort which I thought had to be where he based the story. I then went back to the book and reread the Foreword by Roberts, and indeed he visited the fort one summer afternoon and met your grandmother. Thank you for identifying the location. I see the fort went on sale earlier this year, it looks as if it still needs restoration, so I guess your family were the last to use it. A very special place, and thanks to Roberts' book I feel I have seen it as it once was.

Thomas, thank you for your condolences regarding my mom. She was an amazing individual that loved life and found the goodness in everyone. Her early education in Italy allowed her the ability to speak four languages fluently. And she loved Italy as you do today.

Dear Mr. Hayes, Thank you so very much for your kind reply. I work with medical researchers here in Italy, so I am quite adept at moving around the internet. I hope you are not offended by my being so curious regarding your family's heritage, but when I read the comments here a while back, I was thrust into the project. In doing so, I came across your dear Mother's obituary online, as well as that of your Aunt Julie's; and it was then I was able to learn so very much. Yes, their lives were ones of adventure due to their unbridled determination and courage. You are so very justified in being proud of them!!! I do hope you will find the time to write down their story for others to learn from and enjoy. Whenever I watch this video of the "Ottagono Alberoni" I always remember your grandparents, your mother and your aunt. Finally, I visit Venice often and have concrete plans to be there in early March 2021 for about 2 weeks. During this period it will be my top priority to take a hired boat to the "Ottagono" . If do succeed in getting onto the island, I will surely let you know. My best to you and your family, Thomas

Can I visit Ottagono Alberoni? My grandfather built the housing there and brought the statues in the garden there as well. My family was perhaps the last family to live there.

Dear Mr. Hayes, what a thoroughly fascinating story!!! I am an American living in Italy and am completely in love with this "ottagono". You must have a trove of stories to tell about your family and this jewel in Venice. I too long to visit this island and am told while one can reach it by boat without difficulty, it is not possible to set a foot on it as it is private. However, it is for sale!!!!!!
