In today's episode, learn how to Light an Amazing Portrait with a low cost DIY Lighting Kit. Our kit is under $50!
Introduction to Portrait Lighting
If this is your first time using lights for a portrait, being able to see how the lights interact with your subject will amaze you! The slight movement of a light can have a large impact on the mood of your photo. When you are taking a portrait, everything should revolve around your subject. Your choice in lighting should match the tone of the subject.
What We Cover
In this photography episode, we go over the specific lights we chose for our DIY (Do It Yourself) lighting kit. We also cover some lighting basics and the purpose of each light we used. Then we give you some awesome tips on working with your subject. We cover some things you can do and say to make your subject feel more comfortable.
Stay tuned for our next episode as we edit one of these head shots. The RAW file that Aaron is editing will be available for you to download and follow along.

Not every professional has the guts to show his skills like you do. Awesome guy
I typed "DIY Portrait Lighting" into RUclips search and wasn't confident on what results I would get but am VERY happy a result came up with Phlearn and have restored confidence.
Keep up the good work guys! Love from the COOPH team
COOPH oh, you again
I have always said you do not need expensive equipment to achieve quality images. This tutorial is spot on! Great work as always PHLEARN!
A lot of good infos, perfect and didactically organized ... in less than 8 minutes! Just a-ma-zing. Guys you rock!!!
Thanks for this tutorial, Dave Grohl.
Perfect! I love that you are teaching about interacting with the subject. Sometimes I feel like that is one of my weak areas. More please! 😃
Useful Light guide for me. Thank you Aaron .
Great episode!
Keep up the good work guys.
Thank you very much for sharing these tips!

This is awesome! Thank you for what you do!
Loved this!! Thanks so much
Really interesting, can't wait for part 2. I also like that you have started again to show the shootings and "how to" stuff along with photoshopping. Thanks Phlearn!
Wow thanks phlearn... gotta try this one ASAP
Nice to see some photography tutorials again!
Sterling stuff, keep it coming guys. Simply awesome.
Great tips, thanks!
Would be nice to have the following:
a parts list of all the equipment used
a talk through on how to construct the lighting rig as shown
some more technical specs on the lights themselves, e.g. what colour temperature to use, is it necessary to set a custom white balance, etc.
Totally agree!
I enjoyed this video as much as I do most of the stuff they put up.
Nonetheless this was a little bit underwhelming,- the "Low Cost DIY Lighting Kit" was basically "buy 3 lights".
No word on construction of the rig, or the cost of 3 light stands (plus a little bit of wood).
pi1k
i think this depends on the location you are shooting, you can do a lot with some strings, nails and tape. The white balance is diferent with every light. shoot in RAW to choose the white balance you like the most
Loved the video but I agree with you, the tape trick is good but I'd also love to know the best way to set up a rig for chip, for it to be movable with ease with secure stands as shown in the video.
If you shoot RAW you don't have to worry about the color temperature. You save all the information in your RAW file and will take care of this in post.
***** yeah, you got a point there- of course the kit / rig depends on what you want to do and where you want to do it.
but still: they could show at least how to build THEIR exact setupt (indoor portrait shooting).
Please don't get this wrong- it's not the end of the world and of course most people can figure something out with common sense, but I feel that it would have been nice for total beginners for example =)
(pls excuse possible flaws or typos- I just got up and my language skills are note totally awake yet ^^)
Awesomeness!!!
...and don't forget to spin your subject around between sets placing them in a hypnotic state. It makes them MUCH easier to work with.
thanks! i loved this!
Loved this episode! Thanks so much for doing what you do! :)

I love it, now I can't wait to see the retouch. I have always wanted to figure out how to use that gradient tool.
Wow... great presentation... I like it very much...
This is AWESOME and the timing? Great! I'm looking for continuous lights brands and reviews to start figuring out what a good portrait studio setup could be and this is hands down perfect.
It's good, it's cheap and you're even showing us the post processing in the next episode.
I have a friend of mine who's been modeling around Europe and was always keen to shoot with me to help me learn but I never felt I could really capture her beauty well enough.
This is the perfect setup that will enhance her natural traits and looks, once again thank you Aaron and the Phlearn team :)
This is really useful Thankyou xxx
I like that he has $15 lights on a $200 stand! I have the same stand and it is a good one!
Great video, I've been looking for a DIY light set-up.
Arron Nace you're the best!
Excellent, Arron. I have just ordered 3 x 500mm leyton fluorescent lights and 5 link leads from amazon uk, hopefully to do something similar, but I can also see other uses for the lighting setup, especially with vehicles that I intend to photograph. Thanks for the fab tutorial.
Awesome video, I really liked it
This was an awesome tutorial Thanks !! ... Definitely, going to shoot this evening
Nice episode 😍😍😍
this is amazing , you just saved me more than 200$ looking for speed lights

No bloopers today Aaron? Thanks as always. Loving the different style. Really suits you.
Finally! Can't wait to watch the video :D

It's exactely what i'm teaching to my student. Because most of the time they complaining by saying : hoo i d'ont have money to buy expensive lighting... My answer is always the same : you don't have to be rich for take amazing portrait picture.
Thanks for sharing this. Something that i will show to my student for sure. Because i'm teaching in Indonesia, but if the tips coming out of this country the impact will be much more effectif for them! hahaha! Yeah it's like that.
Great Video

tHANK YOU VERY MUCH ! this is such an awesome and affordable technique i can use at home to shoot my kids, thank you giving us the opportunity to learn for free, thank you very much. much respect from the Philippines!
I always wanted to learn about studio/indoor material with decent budget...this is amazing Phlearn... Also I see y'all changed up a bit...this video is excellent.
i'll love see the postproduction video !
Great lighting setup for any studio. My setup is pretty similar, but I do like to mix in a little incandescent light as well to warm it up. I picked up a variety of colored bulbs on sale and use an old drafting table lamp (really long, adjustable arm for positioning) in order to do some nice tinted accents on the cheap. Hell I've been known to throw in some candlelight or even a lava lamp to hit the right effect.
Nice tutorial.. loved this one..
Really informative And helpful video 👍
Really helpful. Waiting for PhotoShop tutorial !
i love you videos thanks to share :)
This is a really great video :)
Phlearn, thank you SO much for making this photography tutorial! The reality is that with you guys, I got so much better at photoshop that my photography knowledge really fot left waaaay behind!! :-s This is just what I needed! :D

More DIY-Tips, please!:)
Greetings from Germany!
I wish really find lights such like this , really something awesome
and yet another awesome tutorial from ***** , happy new Year!
I have both complete guide to retouching and retouching 101-301 and both are stellar. Love your 70-200 but too expensive for me now. Hope my 100mm 2.8 L macro would fit the job
Love the video and looking forward to more great content! Is there any video planned for product with/without a model photography tips?
Gracias . Saludos .
I love a lot
I really like your Studio Tutorials and it would be awesome if you could do some more!
I also think they should be a little longer, so you can cover more information.
Simple and it looks great! What were you using to mount the lights? Just taped to lighting stands?
What about the hair light? Taped to a boom?
This is so helpfull to me as a photographer
good job guy! :)
The Photoshop Tutorials are always awesome. Thanks. Nice break in getting back to lighting. Here's a thought on a tutorial (or series). "One Strobe, Two Strobe, Three Strobe, More!" This could be what you can do if you only had one strobe, or two, and what you could add to the lighting if you had a third or more strobes for lighting... As you demonstrated three lights today, and it was a great video. Keep up the great work, it's appreciated.
Just wanted to take a plan on a silmple Photography Studio and then This showed up xD
Thank's so much, was very helpful (as always) ^w^
Would love an episode that covers live music photography :)
hey phlearn. again a great tut. thanks for this one.
we would like to know about (perspective) . like if we cut out a person and paste him or her on another background. what should be the perfect place to paste him or her to look more natural.
will wait for this tut brother.
thanks in advance :)
love the videos, but it's a bit disingenuous to claim the setup is under $50 if you neglect to add the C-stands - without those, it's just three lights laying on the floor.
Shop the reject isle of the lumber store for boards costing about $0.25 and make something (you can build something for less than $10).
Or splurge on a couple inexpensive light stands and some string.
Couldnt agree more ☝️
More vids like this pleeeeze
you're the best :)
Great
Great tutorial once again. I have a suggestion for a future tutorial. Can you show us how to light and shoot an automobile? Thanks.
