Apparently the night before the accident occurred a construction crew was doing some maintenance involving the backhoe and they did not put the switch back. The accident occurred during the first excursion of the day and the crew missed that the switch was incorrectly set. Strasburg Railroad was able to continue doing excursions that day using on of their diesel engines and later that they were able to tow 475 back to Strasburg.
Sounds like the installation of a spring switch would be helpful. One at each end of that bypass track, and you no longer have to concern the crew with throws, or derails.
