    This brings back happy memories from a couple of years ago. Sadly, due to global warming the glacier is retreating and each year it becomes more difficult to ski to the end of the valley.

    • @topsnowtravel
      @topsnowtravel  2 года назад +1

      The melting and retreating of the glacier is very sad indeed!
      The 500 steps up the mountain is hard on the legs at the end of this long off-piste-run and you wonder how how many more there will be or if they will move the lift completely when the glacier retreats even more. Best to make the most of it and admire it while we can 😊

    I still can't quite believe I was stupid enough to have done this once with out a guide, harness, or crampons. But still lived to tell tale and will always have those memories of one of the best off piste boarding runs I've ever done and easily comparable with some of the best boarding days inc Kicking horse in Canada etc.

    How long does it take to ski down?

    • @topsnowtravel
      @topsnowtravel  8 месяцев назад

      It depends on many factors, your skill level, if you take a few stops to admire the stunning views. You then have to walk up 500 + steps to reach the gondola not to mention the ice cave at the bottom.
      If going at an easy pace about 4 to 5 hours. Definitely book a table for lunch at Le Refuge du Montenvers

    Hi, I'm going to Chamonix in a couple of weeks. I'll be doing an off piste lesson and I will decide on VB after. Is it possible to rent equipment and join a guided tour at short notice?

    • @topsnowtravel
      @topsnowtravel  Год назад +1

      It depends when you're travelling, I would always recommend booking a guide in advance, they also can book you a table and reserve your spot on the cable car of the Aiguille du Midi. For renting equipment, I don't see a problem and you can rent on the spot without pre-booking if you're travelling outside school holidays 04 Feb - 04 March. There's a mountaineering shop called Concept Pro Shop just behind the cable du midi cable car which I recommend renting at least the day before to be sure:

      @@topsnowtravel thanks for the response! It would be March the 6th (Tues) or 7th. Doing the lesson on the 5th. My concern is that I may not be that good at off piste skiing and I wouldn't want to hold a group back or endanger my life!

      too scared 😱 to fall in a crevasse on the glacier which are hard to spot under the powder so just followed the guide's tracks unfortunately 😔

    • @keithgrainger8797
      @keithgrainger8797 2 года назад +1

      I've done it on a board. Taking your own line on the steep is ok. Unfortunately it's not that steep coming down the glacier. Lots of flats where following tracks trying to keep up the speed is a must to make it. There are a few couliors to the left when you start. Don't think they took that route though . There's loads of ski tour routes around the area to find nice steep pow.

    Are guides required?

    • @topsnowtravel
      @topsnowtravel  Год назад

      Not required but very highly recommended. You don’t want to fall in a crevasse… and a local mountain 🏔️ guide reduces that risk, plus you get to learn more about the area and the prices are reasonably cheap for what it is worth 😊
      Go with a guide:
      www.chamonix-guides.com/en/activities/category/ski/vallee-blanche-skiing
      You can join a group if you’re solo and wanna save money or go private
