@@ruggsterify thanks for the info, I’m going to continue researching him and his influence. I have grown to appreciate the intricacies of movements more as of late but for $33K, I need it to be aesthetically pleasing as well with an abundance of precious metals included. Regardless, that smart watch clip was hilarious lol
I have a couple IWC and love the brand but I have to disagree with you on this one. IWC managed to reduce the size by eliminating some of the functions, which is fine, but for them to really impress, they needed to keep the same functions as the other model (year, PR display) AND reduce the size. That would be impressive. But only being able to reduce the size by eliminating functionality is nothing to brag about. And Yes, no body really need the year display, but no one really needs a mechanical watch either so that point is moot. The PPC Blue Dial is still to me the best IWC.
And what this watch REALLY accomplishes is not having the apertures cut into the hour indicators! One of the most annoying features of the Portuguese PC. Taking out the 4 digit year is NOT an enhancement. Give me the same watch, slightly larger but designed like the Big Pilot face. Delete the 12. Realign the hour indicators. So simple.
Agreed, the fact that he doesn’t mention the 42 mm version that had the full layout produced before the the 44 mm is disappointing. Don’t get me wrong I love this channel but this video missed the mark
I just typed the comment below before seeing yours :"No it's not. 1. the power reserve failed to retain its predecessor's 7 days, not even 3 days. 2. no power reserve indicator. 3. its perpetual calendar is still the simple and hard to adjust synchronized version. The independent adjustability of year, month, day and date is a MUST to a high end perpetual calendar watch." That said, I almost completely agree with you except that I don't quite like the bigger 7 day one, because it's just too big.
I own a perpetual calendar white gold and it is an amazing watch. My version is 44 mm (with the year indicator) and it looks fine on my 17 cm wrist... I can wear it with a suit no problem, fits under the sleeve... The movement is delicate, so adjusting anything at the wrong time will set your watch on its way to Switzerland for repair. That is a big heads up. That happened to me once and, trust me, you don't wanna go down that road (took months to get it back). Highly recommend a programmable winder to keep it running if you don't wear it that often.
The importance of the size and fit of a watch is paramount for me. I’ve tried on watches that i would include in the holy grail category that looked shocking on me. Adversely,I tried on a Nautilus once ( by far not a favourite of mine) felt great looked great. You’ve got to put them on your wrist. No point in saving and salivating over something that just ain’t you.
Can’t deny this watch is beautiful and looks so classic. Although it’s slightly smaller than their norms, still not 40mm or less. Personally I’m tired of the big dials from past years.
The IWC Portugieser perpetual calendar in blue and gold might be the most beautiful watch I've ever seen. But it's 44mm....if they shrunk it to 40-42 mm they'd be my ultimate watch.
One thing that should have stayed from the 44mm, it's the 7 days power reserve... Otherwise, I do agree that the 4 digits year display is not of great use
My dear Kevin , I had no idea you are an engineer (once an engineer always an engineer) . I had always thought you were a voice from heaven which has found it’s niche in this mortal plane . And thank you for pointing out to me the importance to Watchfinder , of subscribing !!! I’ve been listening to your voice for ages (the watches come a distant second - BOOM BOOM) and didn’t realise I hadn’t subscribed until this particular episode containing your humble entreaty . Thank you for your wonderful presentation , you’re the only reason for my continuing allegiance to Watchfinder . When your voice no longer appears I’m off
I am seriously considering one.. (IW500705) but used cause its cheaper though. Can you let us know how is your watch since you bought it? is it worth it?
Year display is cutting edge. The sizes are for me no problem, but others made watches that demands my wishes. When i want to look at the back of a Aquatimer i can’t see the movement. When i turn a Omega Seamaster from 2019, i see the movement behind glass. Perfect hands, ceramic basel, a zirkonium dial, a beautiful case.
I know if you have to ask you can’t afford it.. but I really miss you telling us the price of these beautiful watches. Maybe I am dreaming that one of these will be in my price range. IWC, I know, isn’t.
Would be very interesting to compare this to the JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual: Similar Kurt Klaus perpetual mechanism but smaller and much thinner at 39x9.2mm
IWC are a very masculine brand. But I don’t know why most of their watches are so big. If they took 40mm as standard and went back to their great 1950s aesthetics they’d be more successful.
How ironic that so many people liked this comment. The IWC Portuguese is one of the most traditional watches in the game. It’s always been 42mm. They don’t beed to “go back” to their 1950 aesthetic...it’s been the same for nearly 100 years.
As an owner of a Big Pilot, that model speaks for itself, and is justified given its actually a scaled down luxury Pilot version of the original 55mm behemoth. However, for everything else, I would venture a different guess here given I doubt it has anything to do with their engineering capabilities to make something thinner. The answer is "the Richemont Group". I would expect that there are some corporate flowdowns to Panerai, IWC and JLC to not overlap each other. If the Portugieser gets smaller and thinner (and it did this year btw, but still not thinner than JLC), that overlaps with JLC master control series. Master compressor is no longer in production because it was very masculine, and masculine is for IWC and Panerai it would seem. Richemont instead seems to be unfairly marketing JLC as a budget Patek Phillipe, and attempting to get IWC and Panerai to recapture the magic of the early 2000s back when they were industry darlings. With the industry trending back down to smaller watch diameters and thinner cases and movements, it will be interesting to see how IWC navigates the times given likely "internal constraints". Disclaimer: this is all my speculation, nothing factual or researched in any way.
i love that it only has 3 sub-dials and that the moonphase is integrated at 6 o'clock 4 sub-dials are too busy for my eye (the english term is sub-dial right?)
No it's not. 1. the power reserve failed to retain its predecessor's 7 days, not even 3 days. 2. no power reserve indicator. 3. its perpetual calendar is still the simple and hard to adjust synchronized version. JLC offers a steel perpetual calendar under 10mm (!) thick and priced at $20000. I just don't see why I should pay double that and put a goddam gold tuna can on my wrist.
Too big !! the movement doesn’t fill out the whole case Zenith El Primero the first series from 1969 are the deal I have one 51 years old now and it’s still one of the best movements ever made !!!
Good engineering Mr Klaus but I think Dr Ludwig Oechslin trumps him with his work for Ulysse Nardin whose perpetual calendars are cleverer still. Good looking watch too, this IWC, but a bit of a plain Jane imho.... such a clever complication needs a little pizazz!
One year later and I've changed my mind. I tried it on. Now I think I want it. But in stainless steel or Gold. The only real problem with it, it's still kind of big.😊
