The biggest thing I've done to curb my buying habits was to stop ordering from book outlet when I realized I wasn't even enjoying the majority of books I bought.

I've never been able to stay on a book buying ban, but I'm testing out this new thing where I'm allowed to buy 3 books for every 10 I read. It's making me more excited to read books I already own and I'm shrinking my TBR.

🍭 is this my new favourite video you’ve made? Quite possibly. In a fit of rage at myself, I have temporarily created a chair of shame. It is where all book purchases must be made (we don’t have a bookstore in my tiny rural town) and I have surrounded it with the piles upon piles that is my TBR. Not a good long term solution, but seeing it like that often makes me think twice about adding to the piles. Otherwise I have made all the same mistakes, and am also using the same strategies to help reset myself. Maybe my chair of shame idea will help someone 😂

I too am doing a gradual book detox. I’ve been and will keep unhauling/gifting my books until I reach my goal of having under 50 books in my collection of 4-5 star reads that I’ll reread and annotate, and be happy when I look at my lil shelf!

This was a well-timed video. I’m currently struggling with buying books and this is such a lovely reminder to keep going on the journey of breaking up with impulsive book buying. 🍭

These are great tips! My biggest one that I’ve found helpful is if I’m interested in reading a book but not sure I’ll like it is to put it on hold at the library, so then I can read it without consequence. I’m trying to read 10 of the books on my shelf before checking books out from the library or buying a new book

I'm on a book buying ban of sort as well. My birthday is this Saturday and my grandfather sent some gift money so I allowed myself to buy just 1 book with that, and another came the other day that I pre-ordered. Both of those two books I plan to read within the next month or so, because they have spooky vibes, and they are both pretty short. No more after that until I make a reasonable dent in my owned tbr. I have over 100 books I need to read, probably closer to 200 at this point, even after tons of unhauls. I do genuinely want to read all of the books I own so I need to actually do it. Any books I hear about through media that sounds like something I would love I am adding to my amazon book wish list. There's no rush to buy them right now, something I need to constantly remind myself lol

Ban's are dangerous because they feel so restrictive! So liming the books instead is a lot more sensible for me

I definitely did that with some Manga. It like if you don't buy it now it more harder to find the next vol or theyveant crazy amount. 🥺 Now I'm collecting the W.I.T.C.H. graphic Novel and I'm trying not to buy all of them but it so hard but a quick read.
Definitely will be making another list of all the series I'm in between off

I have been curbing my need to buy with mu library. Everytime I see a book on booktube or where ever I check the library and put it on hold. When its read or anytime I have time really, I go in there and check out a ridiculous amount of books and manga! I can keep them for 4 renewal periods as long as no one request them. I usually loose interest and never end up reading them, or recheck them out over and over or find audio books!

These are some good tips. I only buy the first book to a series if I am interested in giving it a try. I will only buy the sequel if I have finished the first and I am interested in the ongoing story. There has been plenty of first books that I've read that I really enjoyed but decided to leave it there because I simply didn't require or necessarily want more. I also though don't buy any more books of an author unless I've I read what I already have of theirs. Sometimes new releases encourages me to finally read what I have, such as The Night Circus when The Starless Sea came out. I am very lucky in a sense where I don't fall for hype. It is probably to do with how I won't pick up a book for the most part unless I am interested in what the book is actually about. And the ones you could argue that I did pick up because of hype, I did because the way people talked about it made it sound like my kind of book. I am also lucky that I am not a cover person. By this I mean a cover may be pretty and grab my attention but it won't make want to look into the book or have any desire to own it. I am more of a title person because if a book has a great title I will always look into it. Something else that helps me though is have a certain number you are allowed to buy per month, with price limitations too. Aka, if a book is over 30 dollars, with the 30th dollar being my leeway, it counts as two, and so on. That way it makes you think about what books you actually want at that point in time, and sometimes even plan ahead before purchasing them. I am already planning for October.

I often complain about my town where it isn't any good book shops, like we have one that has very mainstream non-fantasy books where I typically doesn't ever want any books. And even though I'm sad that there isn't any good book shops in my town, I also feel like that's great for me cause' otherwise I've gone nuts everytime I went inside. If I want to buy fantasy/sci-fi books I've to either go to the capital of my country or buy online, and I think that's stopping me to always by lots of books online cause' I value more to go in book shop and browse, and I do that like two times a year

My book buying ban lasted for about 5 months. Which I’m rather proud of, honestly. 😂 My guilty pleasure is discounted books. Buy $100 worth and get $25 off. Plus 20% off for being a member. I’d walk out of there with 10-12 books that was on sale for $7 or less. I would have paid more than double at regular price. I let my membership expire, and I refused to go to the bookstore at all during those 5 months. No coupons or discounts, no temptation.
    …and then my birthday happened.
