Making this as a reminder for myself.
- Avoid Doubles if you're unexperienced in pixel art.
- Avoid jagged lines that come from not thinking more methodically about your lines.
- Outlines can have a big impact on how people percieve your pixel art.
There are times to use doubles for sure. One I can think of is at corners if you want to draw a rectangular object that's tilted at an angle.
I've gotten so much better at pixel art because of your videos (I made my profile picture. Not perfect, has some jaggies but looks better than before)

The heuristics (number rule) you propose for curved lines is real gold! It actually makes a lot of sense, when you think about interpolating gradients of smooth lines at discrete points (if you would reason about it more mathematically.

A tip for math nerds: If you want to draw some type of curve, such as an arc of a circle, that can be expressed as an equation, such as x²+y²=r², you can literally just plug in that equation with the x and y values of the pixels to make a mathematically perfect pixel representation of the curve. Just remember to fix any unwelcome emergent jaggies.

I actually like using doubles (sometimes) as it can be a great bold outliner for certain sprits.
They're handy at corners to emphasize a sharp angle

It was very useful and helpful! When I'm trying to create pixel art, sometimes it would look off due to the jagged lines or the outline doesn't look right. So, I would have to re-work it. This tutorial will make things easier for me.
Plus, this will be very useful when creating perler art as well! :)
Great video! The curve technique is actually something I've been doing since forever when working with pixels or voxels. People often wonder how I'm able to make curves without guides :-P but this video perfectly explains it!

personally, I think doubles can work when trying to show the darkness of an area. If the whole piece uses doubles for a thick dark outline, that can look cool too - if that is your style.
After deciding on pixel art for my first video game, since I’ll be a solo developer, I really wanted to find some good resources on YT to help me. That tip about adding the one extra pixel for a sharp edge is fantastic!!! However, in the case of Sonic's shoes, I think the round edge fit the subject better
I just fuck around in mspaint and I already knew the first two tips just intuitively, right down to counting pixels and making sure there's a good sliding scale pattern.

I am incredibly grateful for this. I wanted to learn this stuff in college, but the western education system is a joke now, and they taught me nothing. All they did was take my money, and my parents money, and waste my time.
I remember one time 2 of the tutors just started screaming at me, one in each ear, for no discernible reason. I never did manage to find out what they were upset about. Probably got blamed for something I didn't do. Why would anyone put up with all of that when you can just find tutorials online and teach yourself. Watching this video cost me nothing, and I learned more from it than I did from several years of 'art' 'education'. And nobody screamed at me.

I learned how to program in html,css (kinda),c# and gdscript(the godot game engine's language) from tutorials and apps on my phone (I would suggest sololearn). I'm currently 12. And I help my sister (18 in college) with c++

I have a confession to make.
I actually kind of like the way the "jaggies" look? not like that 2-2-2-5 part but the 2-1-2 part, it works really well for making larger smooth curves- because if you go in the 1-2-3-4-5 pattern like the one that was illustrated here, it doesn't make the pattern of a circle, it makes a pattern more like a hyperbola. It looks fine at the size shown here but at larger sizes it would make a kind of... i suppose lumpy curve.

Based on the example at 5:12 I sometimes did something like this: 4;3;2;3;2;5;8 to get edges on the surfaces and have some sort of rug-ish surface and I was wondering, is this the wrong way to draw rugged surfaces like this. Is there a better way to draw those surfaces?

Anti-aliasing. From my slowly growing understanding mix it’s a process which computers use to smooth out the lines a little by slight shadowing

Did you know that for the Jaggies you used the Fibonacci sequence? 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21, in fact you sum the number with the one just before and you go on. If you don't know this, try to google it, and you will see why it is more natural using it.

hmm, sometimes applying such approach to fixing the so called jagged line will cost you losing the proper bodily proportions.a jagged line might represent a better flexed muscle on a character for an instance than a fixed one. what should be done then?

In photoshop you can use paths and stroke path to make lines of 1 pixel
I wonder if some of this applies to the pixel art that is just enough pixels that you can't see the individual pixels, but you can still tell that it is pixel art.

Do you see the outline as an extension of the image? I mean, those pixels to make it pointy sounds to me like if that extra pixel is having half information about the image and half information about the background, like if that image had double the definition that kind of detail would be inside of the image instead of in the outline, do you see it in the same way?
Also, you add the point to Sonic's nose on top of it, how would have you done if it was a moving object? Would the pointy outline pixel change between being up and down?

Usually it's better to learn traditional art and life portraits before getting into, say, digital art.
I love pixel art. I definitely consider it just as serious as any other form of art.
Hello! I've just noticed your channel recently and it's cool! I see you're using Aseprite here. It looks like a great software so I got it, since I wanted to get into pixel art for a long time. I love games with pixel graphics, so I felt like making some sprites n' stuff myself. Sadly, I suck a lot so far. I apreciate your work with these tutorials, they are centered around certain things you wanted to point out and show your thoughts on them. It's neat and helpful. But have you ever though about creating some series for total beginners? I'd love to see some long series, from very basics to (semi)advanced things. How to properly use software and make a good use of its tools, but also how to create pixel art in general, explained to someone who isn't really good at it at all. What about it? :)

What if I have a quarter circle arc that spans, say, over 50 pixels? In those cases, removing jaggies creates an undesired "corner" where the absolute slope changes from 2 to 1, and again from 1 to 1/2.
Huh... I've never gone through tutorials before, and already knew all of this. Cool! That said, I do learn by comparing with professional artwork, so I guess I must have picked it up there. Not that I'm some pro or something, just trying to learn for a game I'm going to be making. For reference, I'm more of a programmer, so the artwork is not going to be easy for me. Still, I think I can make something decent enough for my needs. I'm not exactly starting with advanced 3D modeling for a reason. XD
I needed to use the pattern 2, 1, ,2, 1, 2, 1 in an animation transition.
Is this pattern considered a jaggie? And is it considered wrong too? or can i use it in a transition?

Doubles can look really great sometimes, have a look at the game Super Cat Bros by FDG (which has a 4.8 on the playstore)
