It’s sad that they even need to be trained but yeah, Ryan needs to sit them down and tell them what he expects every morning on the job so they can do it and not wait to be told
I had a boss like that. I stuck with him longer than anyone else ever did. I did learn from him was how to work hard and I understand how to treat people. I learned a lot.
Knowing the videos are weeks behind and you've already been on vacation, I hope it was the break you obviously needed and had a great time. Perfect timing with all the anxiety and still unknowns with the city on the land. All these annoyances today would normally be laughed off to a point but good for you to just walk away. One thing that had to help this morning was Tino was on site and on time. 😁
Ryan, I hope you get a chance to read this. Times can get frustrating even for the boss. May I make a suggestion this is from years of leading in the military. Friday's need to be pep talk days for you and your team. What wen't right during the week what does the team need to do to work better together. You had every reason to be frustrated. People need to quit sitting around and look around to see what needs to be done next. These guys know the job already but they seem to get spaced out when it comes to the flow of things. Sure each job is a little different but when the boss goes to start ripping up concrete if the truck isn't around then the boys need to wake up. Critiquing yourself and the crew once a week will get everyone in line. you already have a good team its some little things that will make them a great team.
Ryan, I cannot blame you for walking away. Its always better that way. On another note, I have to admit, you guys make this look easy. A couple weeks ago I happened to be watching another channel while they were pouring concrete. Let's just say I had A LOT of comments I made only to myself. 😉 It didn't look remotely like anything you'd put your name on. Keep up to good work and I hope you & the family had an relaxing & enjoyable vacation.
Great video as always Ryan! Irritable when necessary is understandable and it really seemed like this job was it! I was laughing at the first dump to the street and then afterwards seeing everyone just sitting there with their arms crossed I was even like COME ON!
Hoping you and your family had a great time on vacation. Dont know anything about concrete except it exist but i love these videos and how you and your crew interact and still get good work done.
I can't wait for you guys to move to the new land. Seeing you drive in after getting the chalk line really put into perspective how little room you currently have
This isn't the first time ya'll done this... everyone should know and anticipate all the steps and what is coming next. It's not rocket science! You all tired though, needed that vaca time off for all to get ready for the second half of the season! You doing the right things and you said it great about sometimes it isn't fun to be the boss, but I wouldn't have it any other way either. You're a good boss you work hard right beside them as a good example. Hope you felt refreshed and felt better before your vacation started.

I would have loved to have you as a leader when I poured concrete but I didn’t need to be told what needs done. Great job and I love watching your videos. Makes me want to start up my company again.
Ryan you talking about your old boss, reminds me of a boss I had. The man kept us so uptight and nervous, that there was no way we were as productive as we could have been. The man had to know that. I hung around with him for 3 years, I honestly respected the man cause he did help me out. I just hated how he was from 6:30am until we got off.
I had a boss like that. We were drinking after hours and he was still being like a king, talking down on me off the clock, so I ended up smacking him over like a regular guy off the street talking smack.
Always love how much attention to detail you have. Nothing ever seems to get by. The dust in the garage, any time there is an imperfection in pitch or if a curve isn't consistent, etc... I'm sure it's a blessing and a curse since you have to run around and check everything all the time lol.
I appreciate the guy that didd your roof. He takes genuine pride in his work which is so hard to find these days. If I wore a hat, it would be off to him.
There are 2 different kind of bosses, the ones that gives you the task and let you think for youreself and the one who micromanages. I think you are the second kind Ryan, I worked for this kind of bosses, I always get scared to not make mistakes to the point I don’t do anything unless asked to. I prefer the kind who just gives me the task and let me to it, usually the job gets done faster and better than the boss expected. Guess what? The people who work under me impress me in the good way all the time, I let them do the job the best they know, if they don’t do it right I just tell them how to do it after I see it doesn’t look like it’s getting done right. That’s what my father taught me: “Allow people to make mistakes , and learn from them” But as for you, you are a perfectionist, if things don’t go perfect, you explode. People are afraid to make you upset, and avoid taking initiative, just to not make mistakes.
I learned this years ago with my guys… your guys come to expect you to tell them what to do. Just like when they parked you let them know their decision wasn’t right. They get to where they are not sure if they should. It does get frustrating because in our minds we know exactly what needs to happen next but in their minds they wait for your approval to start the next step
Some of that could come from bad bosses in the past. I've worked for a guy that if we moved onto the next step without his approval or him telling us to he would lose his mind even though everything was done 100% correctly. Some bosses have a control complex and flip when they feel they're losing it. I've also had bosses I wouldn't see for a week at a time because he knew I had it and didn't have to worry about it.
Bugs doesn't drive a truck or it would've been there. Ryan gives a lot of grace to new people until they figure it out, but if everyone is thinking ahead the job goes smoother and stuff gets done faster.
I would take a new video every day,but nothing better than sitting on the deck with coffee on a Sunday morning and watching Victory. It's a healthy addiction my wife doesn't understand. Wish my path would have taken me into blue collar instead of a desk job. Would love my 12 year old to get into a trade when he is older. Going to be a huge demand.
why wait till he gets older? buy him a hammer, tape measure, etc. and give him some 2x4's and see what happens. if he shows interest, send him to trade school or union. there, you get paid to learn and some trade schools help with job placement. ive been in concrete since '95 and a finisher since '97 but along the way ive picked up other skills in construction and mechanical knowhow. since i live on the frozen prairie, we only work 6-8 months of the year so we get a nice, long vacation. im on salary year round so its paid vacation for me. ive been in concrete for almost 30 yrs and before that, some siding, roofing and brick tending so 35 yrs in the trades as im 50 yr old now. i dont regret any of it. i made a good living for only having a 10th grade education. but ive learned more real world knowledge than they will ever teach in schools. that is if they even teach anything these days thats applicable to living daily life. sad to think that kids these days will be printing their names instead of writing it. with the way schools are going, if you want your kid to have a normal life, get him working now so he'll want to go into the trades and shy away from "higher" education. like geroge carlin said, "college is a waste of time and money. by the time you graduate, all the drop outs already have the jobs."
It’s cool that eventhough the morning started off rocky, you didn’t carry over that negative energy throughout the day and kept things light and lively with the crew. A good boss and a better man.

The gravel was there for maybe 2 hours. Did it before over the years an never had issue before now.
Good call on the bike ride! Just a thought…all those little “glitches” first thing in the morning is why a lead employee and a quick 5 minute meeting about the job could be very beneficial to making the easy money.

“Some days you just wish you were an employee.. and you didn’t have all the pressure” Few can relate to that, but those who do, understand how wise and true that is. Being the boss man is no easy task. My dad owns a remodeling company and he’s also had me bid and do my own jobs before. It’s a world of difference when you go from somebody who’s just expected to show up and work, to somebody who has to plan, organize, gather materials and tools, AND THEN help with the work.
Yep. Gotta wear many hats. Youre not just managing them as workers but you’re also managing their personal lives as well. This is why I think it’s best to just have a business on your own that won’t require any employees.
Ryan, I feel you pain. love your guys but holy cow. you shouldn't need to say one thing about parking, red chalk, saw dust from saw, dump truck, uniforms, big piles of concrete left over. All of those issues should be resolved after you've been employed a month or so.
Agree... Have a standard for things.. 10 minutes after getting to the site, this and that needs to be done, even if "Ryan Sr" is still on his way. When I ran my crew, I wanted them to get the job done quickly, so they can "relax" the last 4 hours of their shift. Customers tend to be okay with paying people to "relax" when the job is done, vs seeing them "relax" at the start.
Argh, watching the part where everyone was standing around while you were waiting for someone to come with the dump truck made me realize I need to have far more awareness on the job. I 100% admit I am one of those clueless nincompoops with brain malfunctions, when I should be actively trying to think of what to do next. Seeing it from the bosses pov, I fully understand now. Ryan, it may not seem like it, but your videos are a tremendously helpful learning tool without really being on the job. For some reason I can't explain, seeing things from the "outside looking in" gives you a far better perspective of what's going on.

@FGPlus It's not really an ego thing, just a lazy thing. They've all got their own side jobs they're worried about getting to after work, so I wouldn't expect anyone to go the extra mile. Plus Ryan may run his business in the sense that the guys are off the clock when they leave the job.

Workers that are treated so well, WILL become complacent ..... NOT a good thing ... as seen in "previous" years videos of Victory !!! (you all WHO I am referring to .... the D's)
It's so nice to see you out doing the work, concrete men are dying breed where I live there used to be tradesmen that could do anything and they were the best but when they retired no one took over their business and they're all gone. I had a big concrete job not long ago and I had to get guys from another state to come and do it. But I want to say when they showed up they were top notch, it was a family-owned business it was the dad and his 4 sons, they showed up with every piece of equipment they needed, no more having to rent the bobcats for the concrete guys no more having to go find tools, these guys had it all and they knew what they were doing they put down 150 yards of concrete faster than anyone I've ever seen and it was perfect when they got finished.
A lot of those old timers refused to pass down the knowledge as they were afraid they would be replaced by the young bucks if the young bucks were just as knowledgeable as them. So who's fault is it? The generation that doesn't know how to do anything and has a poor work ethic, or the generation that raised the generation that doesn't know how to do anything and has a poor work ethic? Serious question. I work with several guys that are less than 2 years from retirement, and not a single one of them wants to teach the new generation how to do anything, yet they all learned from the guys that came before them, who understood the importance of passing the knowledge down to the next generation, and were proud to see the young guys learn and become professionals like themselves. What I'm saying is, the old bucks failed this new generation. While the old bucks were making bank and only looking out for themselves, their kids were being neglected, left sitting around playing video games and never holding them accountable or giving them responsibilities. I understand that not everyone from the old generation did this, and not everyone from the new generation either, but the overwhelming majority of them did, and the ultimate responsibility falls back on the generation that refused to raise their kids properly, and failed to take the time and teach them the trades that they were fortunate enough to learn from those that came before them. Let's stop pretending like this problem just sprung up from nowhere, because this was a long time in the making, and now the chickens are coming home to roost, and tge old bucks wanna act like they are innocent and its all the fault of the young guys.
@@Watchdog_McCoy_5.7x28 One of the biggest problems I see is that a lot of young people want to get paid a very high wage but yet they don't very high job skills, for instance I asked a guy one time what he wanted to be paid to be a lead carpenter he told me at least $25 per hour and that's pretty good in our area. I said okay you're a carpenter and you know what you're doing correct he said yes I handed him a frameing square and I said cut me a set of stair stringers out of that 2x12 over there, he said we'll just go down to 84 Lumber and buy a set and I said no you'll cut them out of that 2x12, he had no idea how to cut a set of stair stringers using a framing square. That's carpentry 101. So a lot of these people want high wages but they don't have the skill set to go with those high wages and that's another big problem. That's why they're not learning from older people because the older people aren't going to pay them to stand around with their hands in their pocket. If I'm going to hire you as a carpenter then that's what you're going to do You're not going to carry lumber all day that's what the labor jobs are for. And when it's freezing cold and you got to go out and frame a house that's hard work and a lot of people just don't want to do with these days That's what's basically killing a lot of trades right there. I don't know what the answer is but before too long you're going to be paying more to see a plumber or a carpenter or an electrician then you will any doctor.
Honestly these guys have been a team long enough for fluidity. Crews fall off the track's sometimes and having to say time and time again what to do is definitely frustrating.

It’s sad that they even need to be trained but yeah, Ryan needs to sit them down and tell them what he expects every morning on the job so they can do it and not wait to be told

I'm not gonna lie, I laughed when you was dumping it in the road. I've been there before lol
Super funny man! Gotta get the point across somehow 😂
😂😂
I call it reality therapy. I loved it when he just started dumping the concrete!

Great video as always Ryan! Irritable when necessary is understandable and it really seemed like this job was it! I was laughing at the first dump to the street and then afterwards seeing everyone just sitting there with their arms crossed I was even like COME ON!

I hope your family vacation was wonderful because you deserve it and more.
I appreciate the guy that didd your roof. He takes genuine pride in his work which is so hard to find these days.
If I wore a hat, it would be off to him.
There are 2 different kind of bosses, the ones that gives you the task and let you think for youreself and the one who micromanages.
I think you are the second kind Ryan,
I worked for this kind of bosses, I always get scared to not make mistakes to the point I don’t do anything unless asked to.
That’s what my father taught me: “Allow people to make mistakes , and learn from them”
But as for you, you are a perfectionist, if things don’t go perfect, you explode.

I’m not gonna say I disagree with you but these guys been doing this work a long time except ray they should know what’s next to do
@@felicianoleal4358 most people know what to do but if everyone would do that earth would be living paradise :)
Ryan Have you ever tried the joint cutter that you put right on the bullfloat

I would take a new video every day,but nothing better than sitting on the deck with coffee on a Sunday morning and watching Victory. It's a healthy addiction my wife doesn't understand. Wish my path would have taken me into blue collar instead of a desk job. Would love my 12 year old to get into a trade when he is older. Going to be a huge demand.
Right? These guys have the dream schedule! Monday-Friday (I’m sure sometimes Saturdays) and they are usually done by 12-2pm. Great work/life balance.
why wait till he gets older? buy him a hammer, tape measure, etc. and give him some 2x4's and see what happens. if he shows interest, send him to trade school or union. there, you get paid to learn and some trade schools help with job placement. ive been in concrete since '95 and a finisher since '97 but along the way ive picked up other skills in construction and mechanical knowhow. since i live on the frozen prairie, we only work 6-8 months of the year so we get a nice, long vacation. im on salary year round so its paid vacation for me.
ive been in concrete for almost 30 yrs and before that, some siding, roofing and brick tending so 35 yrs in the trades as im 50 yr old now. i dont regret any of it. i made a good living for only having a 10th grade education. but ive learned more real world knowledge than they will ever teach in schools. that is if they even teach anything these days thats applicable to living daily life. sad to think that kids these days will be printing their names instead of writing it. with the way schools are going, if you want your kid to have a normal life, get him working now so he'll want to go into the trades and shy away from "higher" education.
like geroge carlin said, "college is a waste of time and money. by the time you graduate, all the drop outs already have the jobs."
You’re a great leader and everyone has their day! They have to learn the needs of each job! This job should be a known to them!

That job needed three blokes minimum, not two. Two to roll it out very slowly while third goes behind using the hand roller to ensure no bubbles.
