Dreamcast was the only Sega system I ever owned and despite it's short lifespan, I don't regret that purchase one bit. It truly was a remarkable console that just came to late to repair the damage the Sega brand had already inflicted upon itself.
Same here. The Dreamcast was my only experience as a kid with Sega. I had friends and cousins who had the Genesis but I was too young to really be in that generation. The N64 was my first console. I ended up getting a PS1 & Dreamcast around 1999/2000 and then an original Xbox in 2003.

One other reason TG16 was a dirty dog in its day was unlike NES, Genesis and SNES, you usually couldn't rent TG16 games and try before you buy. Dirty dog move. It's why so many kids ended up with Vigilante.
the Dreamcast cab also play 99% of its game library via burned discs NATIVELY without any modding required. Now THAT'S a dirty dog I can get behind, as a frugal collector!

Definitely a cool thing, but I had a bad experience with this. Had about 15 burned games that worked fine for awhile, then went to play them a year later, and none of them worked.

I always felt that the PS3 was dirty-doggin' us early adopters for years by having the bleakest of RPG offerings for us PS2 RPGers while we had to look enviously at Microsoft getting Sakaguchi's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.
The PS3 is a criminally underrated console, I dare you to find a killer PS3 game that costs more than $25, plus the original console plays games for every Playstation system up to that point.
Yeah, I'd say that was one of the best times for Xbox exclusives.

I got one when I was 13. Games were suuuuper expensive and too few. My dream was to get Double Dragon. Fast forward 3 years I gave up on it and what would you know, now I can find double dragon even in my local meat shop.
Fast forward 20 (and some more) years and I am now playing double dragon in my master system every time my wife goes out for shopping.

It's crazy that Gameboy had such a long life span before GBA. Proves that a console don't need the most powerful CPU/GPU to become successful. It's all about the games and the experience.
Wish we can get videos about "Top 5 ugliest consoles" and "Top 5 most good looking consoles" later on. Maybe also "Top 5 most icon consoles". It's so much personal preferences but always so interesting to read comments!

Thought for sure the Panasonic 3DO would be on this list if not #1. Definitely a dirty dog for those that paid $700 when it first came out, got a short lifespan and limited game library. I would also include Neo Geo.
while i have backed some mega systems over the years i also backed game gear, virtual boy, Dreamcast, and the Wii U and i managed to enjoy them all , well virtual boy not as much but the others are great.
What about the dirty dogs from the NES Metal Gear or Castlevania? Those are some really dirty dogs. You have to crouch to even hit them. Now that’s dirty.
The Saturn is THE system I try and share most with folks. Now that the MiSter project supports it and 8bit-do has a fantastic 6-button controller I’ve gotten two friends hooked up with the Saturn library for the cost less than that of a physical copy of Albert Odyssey :)

Maybe the Virtual Boy was done dirty.. as if it would of had a bit more love & testing.. maybe at the very least it wouldn't of gave people literal headaches.. the console itself was pretty fun.

Good list! Sega themselves was a dirty dog back in the day when they had their rivalry with Nintendo directly. The mud-slinging was at an all-time high when it was the Genesis versus the SNES!
As for an actual dirty dog system I might vote the Game Gear. It couldn't compete with the popularity of the Game Boy, but it did hold its own for a period of time. Having a color portable game system was revolutionary at the time even if it gobbled up six AA batteries like nobody's business!
I always wondered what the battery life was like without the back light fluorescent tube turned on. That’s seems like a more fair test.
@@iwanttocomplain I'm sure it would greatly increase the battery life. That backlight sucks a lot of juice!
Top ten sandwiches to eat while gaming. maybe pairing them with certain consoles. Its grilled ham and and cheese a cross the board for me. With either a Dr Pepper or a glass of milk.

Gotta be the PSP for me. UMD movies were... a thing, and they pushed them ridiculously hard for a medium that was only available on one specific handheld console.
Also finding out YEARS later that you could buy cables to play it on your TV. It makes sense since movies are on it, but it only worked with the 2000 and 3000 models, so I wasn't able to use them without buying another PSP :L
The Saturn is so hard to emulate that the most popular Saturn emulator for a long time was called Yabause, which stood for Yet Another Broken and Unstable Saturn Emulator. The most popular emulator literally had in the name how hard it was to emulate Saturn.
The Saturn is great, even if I only own aboit 4 games for mine due to the prices. I love my Dreamcast more, but I am very very happy with my Sega Saturn.
I am tempted to also say the Sega CD… Sega is probably the king of dirty dogs

The Switch for me. It felt like it broke down the door grabbed the Wii U and sat on its face and farted hard. I had only had my Wii U for a year when it was abandoned for this little turd of a hybrid system! Then it had the nerve to have these super tiny controllers that feels like I'm trying to shake hands with a cat when I try to make my Mario do some sick spin jumps!

I'm pretty sure the Ps2 is nothing but a N64 with DVD format😆. I don't know about a dirty dog but there's a dirty Lynx around there.

Didn't the Wii, DS and 3DS do similar in sales as the PS2
I still think the Wiimote is neat--and it is still the best pointing device on the market. You can even operate it with two candles--which makes it feel like witchcraft
Always considered the DS to be a dirty dog of a console. Nintendo released it, said it wouldn't replace the GBA (it did), and then it went on to sell PS2 numbers and whoop Sony's Portable the PSP and then make sure Sony never came back with the 3ds vs the Vita. A double dirty dog. Nintendo then went on to be the only portable console manufacturer with the Switch. Truly dirty dogging to the dirty doggiest degree.

For me it’s the Saturn, neo geo, and TG16. I’m basing this on the fact that I’ve always wanted all 3 of them, and I don’t have any of them. 😂😂

I don't know your definition of dirty dogs. Since you put the PS2 with DVD's then I guess I will say any modern console as you can just subscribe to services like PS Now & play older titles from PS1 - PS3 if you own a PS4 or 5. The switch playing anything from Gameboy, N64, Genesis & retro games with it's subscriptions & Xbox with game pass. So basically not playing or buying the actual triple A games for those said systems.
Wario Land is one of the greatest games of all-time!

The Xbox is a dirty dog for requiring the purchase of a TV style remote to play DVDs. Its the worst flaw of the system in my humble opinion.

The homebrew emulators on the Wii often have way more features and control options than the Virtual Console ones.
The USB-Loader apps allows you to play games much more conveniently, without having to grab discs and have game boxes that take up a lot of physical space. It also has faster loading times and doesn't have scratches like discs do, which is a MASSIVE improvement for games which had long load times or a tendency to get reading errors..
And you can download almost any game you want, even Virtual Console and Wii Ware apps after the store has been closed.
How can we forget to acknowledge the dirty bird. The dirtiest of them all.

This video makes no sense though.
The DC only lasted 6 months in the UK but still must have sold over a million in that time. In Australia it was only on sale for 3 months! The WiiU was available in all regions for a full 5 years! Nintendo tried really hard with it.
The GameBoy is a dirty dog because it created the monopoly Nintendo always craved, in the handheld market, by being a loss leader. The GameBoy was sold so cheaply that it never turned a profit! It was still always too expensive for what you got though. So I didn’t buy one. It also pushed all competitors out of the market until the PSP. The handheld market is like a 1% market share now but the GameBoy and DS range kept N afloat thought the consoles that probably only about broke even like the N64, GameCube and WiiU.
I'd say you got a good grasp of what a dirty dog console is based on your argument for the Game Boy. And yes, the Wii U certainly lasted longer than the Dreamcast but the point was just to point out that its lifespan ended a few years before the other consoles in its gen (Xbox One + PS4)

I would best describe this channel as pure. No fluff, plugs for any company, or anything. The delivery, balance, and cadence of information and jokes is on point. It's criminal that he's only at 42k subs. Brutally underrated.

I love the Gameboy Advance SP but it was sort of a Dirty Dog for not having a headphone jack built in...
You needed to get an adaptor that was sold separately in order use headphones.
Yeah, that still surprises me every time I go to use it. I just keep forgetting about it.

At first I thought that was a banana, mushroom, and tomato pizza.. I was like, WTF, you dirty, dirty dog! That’s way too far for a regular prank.
Then I watched again and realized they were bananas, strawberries and some kind of nuts on a pancake.
Still kinda dirty, but the important thing is the bananas are safe!
Also, Sega Saturn. If we’re talking actually good systems that got so much hate back in the day, I can’t think of a better example. Except maybe bananas on pizza..

I'm shocked you put two SEGA consoles on your list as much as you like playing them. That's a Dirty Dog move if I ever saw one! Also I would put the original XBOX on that list with the Red Ring of Death. Right on the power button was 4 Different Errors you could come across! Never seen that before on any game console! I wouldn't touch a 1st generation XBOX with a 10 foot pole!

3DO was a dirty dog for having a 600 USD price tag at launch, and then dropping it by half not long after. It was also a dirty dog for having some awesome games intermingled with awful FMV shovelware like Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties.

I'm the lead mod of the retro gaming subreddit, and we tagged the Dreamcast as the last console of our wheelhouse because it was so early and left so early. It's technically a later gen, but it being 6th gen is questionable at best. It showed up early, it left early, it was underpowered, and it was incredible.
I know the 360 is retro now by time, but even among purists the Dreamcast is hard to argue. It's late 5th gen, I stand by that. We all know Sega just kinda did what it wanted to at that time, so tagging them by console gen was hard at best. Especially when it came to the giant cluster-fun of the 32x, sega cd, saturn, and dreamcast. They just kinda did stuff, and we love them for it.
I understand what you're saying. The idea of console generations feels more like something we've constructed rather than something the console makers have intentionally tried to fit consoles into.

Was the PS3 a dirty dog by winning the generation against the XBOX 360 because Sony won the format war (Bluray over HD-DVD) and the PS3 was a high end Blu Ray player? How many people bought a PS3 primarily as a movie player, and only secondarily as a game system??
My "dirty dog" candidate would be Nintendo for designing "Mario Party 64" the the way they did. So many damaged controllers, which would have likely contributed to us buying more controllers. #blisteredpalmgang
The Xbox 360 was a dirty dog with the red ring of death and overheating issues worsened by an add on fan attachment that blocked airflow rather than cool the console. A 16 hour minecraft binge proved it didnt need extra fans.
The Gameboy Color. Just like the DC, it had a short lifespan before being quickly replaced by the GBA. I guess it's debatable if the GBC is part of OG Gameboy or it's own system though.
Not respecting the TG16 as a kid is probably my biggest gaming regret. I was a Genesis kid and most of my friends were Nintendo bros and there was no room for a third company I guess, lol. Ton of great games though.

I can STILL remember back in elementary school we had a show and tell day back in 1989(or possibly 1990) and a girl showed off her new Game Boy. I thought it was the coolest thing back then. Yes, I know, I’m showing my age😅
