Amazing things can happen when light meets ice. None of those things, under any circumstances, should ever be called a "rainbow". Here's what they *really* are.
I think these are some of my finest puns, don't you?
+It's Okay To Be Smart
So... an Icebow? :D
+Sax4565 Many people call them "Solar Halos". You'll get good search results in Google Images using those terms. I've seen some that would blow your mind.
+It's Okay To Be Smart I really enjoy this show. I especially appreciated this episode because it's about WATER! I think you should KEEP GOING! There are a million things to talk about when it comes to H2O!
Incoming series!?!?
Fantastic animations in this one and I continue to dig your style.
WHAT'S COOLER THAN BEING COOL!?
ICE COLD!
yay!puns!
That was so punny
I can't believe its been 3 years. I still remember your excitement when you announced the channel would be launching back in tumblr. Congratulations on all your success! May the IOTBM team get many many more years!
I'm giving those puns a *frosty* reception
😂
+Sally Le Page Are you trying to have a chilling effect on my humor?
+It's Okay To Be Smart let's just show a cold shoulder to that

Double Rainbow? What does it mean?
"Well, a 'double rainbow' is a phenomenon of optics that displays a spectrum of light due to the sun shining on droplets of moisture in the atmosphere. Does that explain it?" - Lux
FFS league.
Lol
It depends on your definition of "rainbow."
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky I'd say, by definition, "RAINbows" are caused by droplets of liquid water, and none of these are caused by liquid water.
Easy test: Do you see a cool colored thing in the sky? Is the sun in front of you? If you answered yes to both of these questions, it's not a rainbow!
+It's Okay To Be Smart I thought it was an aurora but no
RepizM aurora is a different thing
It's Okay To Be Smart So prism don't make rainbows?
That depends on what your deffinition of "is" is
I am your newest subscriber and it took me 15 seconds to know you are proficient with teaching science or anything else for that matter. Keep up the great videos.
This is cool having multiple languages. I thought you might have adapted an automatic translation app embedded in the video. It's very convient to hear the introduction in English while reading the captions in Chinese. Love it!
These videos are so chill.. It's like I am frozen when I watch them because I think they're so cool.
It is funny! I saw what looked like a sun in the sky and I turned West to see the sun setting! I was a little freaked, but this video helps at least a little!
It's so fun to look at that circle of color around the sun
"Very suns. Much refract!"
I had to chuckle.
This is amazing! :D I always wondered how these halo's and sun dogs got there. Thanks again guys!
I lost it at the Sun-dogs thing. Shibeeee😂
This was pretty cool
With some chilly puns.
+max Eguizabal nice creeper profile pic
+max Eguizabal That profile picture is pretty creepy.
+Jeff Ziemkiewicz I dont play minecraft anymore
max Eguizabal then change your profile picture you lazy waste of human resources
No Sundog Millionaire pun? What a missed opportunity.
+IceMetalPunk I'm very disappointed in myself
Joe Hanson
That's okay, you'll just have to double the number of puns in the next video to make up for it, right? :)
LOVE the part where he has the sunglasses then someone just smacks them off. That's what i would have done
very suns
much refract
much nice
very wow
good you
Much perfect
Good meme
It cute
Ha! I asked on the original video where you mentioned "more on that in another video" when you were going to get to it and you said you had forgotten about it. Sooooooo many thanks for finally getting to it! It was even more interesting than I thought it would be!
Who else had a genuine giggle at Sun Doges in 2021
Somehow I wasn't expecting that and I found it delightful
These puns.... oi! Love the second one with the hand knocking off the glasses
I read about this phenomenon in an astronomy book that had black and white illustrations, I'm glad I saw this video because now I have better understanding thanks to the awesome visuals!
this is my favorite and no words can truly describe how happy this made me.... thanks so much, you have no idea 😇💗💖💘💞
Dude this episode is awesome! I saw such a halo on christmas eve in The Netherlands. Never saw such an event before in my life. Thanks for the explanation.
Joe 's puns so cold they send a shiver down my spine but they are good for breaking the ice.
Love the puns. Memes? Not so much.
Exact opposite here.
edit: nevermind

he's basically cheating
This is seriously interesting, I wish I would be lucky enough to see sun dogs and rings in person.
You sure the sponsor was squarespace? 'cause it seemed like old memes were carrying this one. (i ain't even mad, I love old memes)
I agree, old memes are truly priceless
+It's Okay To Be Smart the old memes... sponegar
Dont give me the.... cold shoulder... •drum beat•
At 2:17 I saw one of those halos with sun dogs. There were several other people around, we were waiting for a health club to open but none of them noticed. I wanted to scream "LOOK AT THE SKY!" But didn't want to look like a nut.
man,you are just getting better with your videos.
As soon as I could ince see the halo in Brazil during a warm day, i started imagining how cold is it up there. I never thought about that. We don't have snow, but hail only comes during the most hot days.
So I’m here bc today I saw the ‘sun dogs’ at 4pm, it was about 90•F and it looked pretty cool! Is it possible to have those cold crystals in the top layers even though it’s so hot?? My little brain needs help! 😂
Love it. Showing it to my kids right now 😊🌈☀☔
Wow, these are AMAZING!!!! I gotta go watch the sky more!
ice crystals, the sun and some clouds and the right angle at the right time of the day and you have the recipie for some potentialy crazy awesome beautiful natural light show right there.
Joe, you forgot the iridescent cloud. One of the coolest and most impresive
I see this all the time in Florida! so beautiful!
“I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;
And I will remember My covenant which is between Me and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
Genesis 9:13-16
I love them all but double rainbows on beaches because of special memories with my husband and sun dogs in the mountains because of my grandmother.
I recently walked in freezing fog and the ice crystals on my jacket were exactly that prism shape as seen at 1:00.
I also remember skiing and seeing a second sun down in the valley where a cloud of ice crystals had formed one very cold day!
That explains the moon ring I saw! I saw a ring around the moon and I was wondering how it was happening, now I know! Thanks!
Needs more length to cover this awesome topic.
My cringe-meter is calibrated so high when it comes to science, I've only registered one false positive. Advantages of measuring in Kringes...
Same
I don't understand. Can someone please explain it to me.
I kinda cringed at the whole thing. . . .considering he left out it's just what we'd be seeing from 20+ years of experimental but increasing and widespread geoengineering. Look it up thru nasa and jpl.
+Jay Last What's JPL?
maybe they should be called 'ice bows' on the general case.
they are really cool, but my favorite atmospheric thing is how sometimes the clouds conspire with the sun to paint the world golden a few hours before sunset.
Nice video. But the thing at 0:25 is definitely not a halo fenomenon, no ice crystals are involved. It's called *cloud iridescence*, strongly related to the *corona* optical phenomenon. It's an effect coused by the diffraction of light by very small (supercooled) cloud droplets, not ice crystals.
I like how in the beginning he said the Xmas sweaters were ugly. lol. and those pics were soooooooooooooooooooo cool
I used to go skydiving a few times a year and one daive i was under canopy and i coasted thru a small cloud. when i was right above the cloud the sun was right behind me and there was a small circle "rainbow" directly in my path. i learned later that this is called a glory and i think it happens when the sunlight is directly behind you and your shadow is cast into fog/clouds. it can happen if your up on a cliff or a bridge
Love your Videos bro keep it up !
Great episode, great animation, great humor. 10/10
Sun dogs are my favorite natural phenomenon!
Mate, I think you need to *chill* out with all these puns!
+axianerv e Ice see what you did there
+It's Okay To Be Smart A nice icing on the cake to say the least.
Me waiting on the puns
I saw one of these on a school field trip.
It was so cool.
Your puns save my life and makes me want to leave this planet at the same time.
22 is the new answer to life, the universe, and everything.
Love the puns. Keep em coming.
I love your videos!
When I first heard Ronny James Dio sing about "A Rainbow in the Dark" I thought it was an absurd impossibility that he was using a metaphor...
Then one day in the middle of January, at 2AM, I looked up at the sky, and there was indeed, a Rainbow in the Dark... Completely encircling the full moon.
And I've never listened to that song the same again.
I can't believe you didn't mention Leaping Sundogs! Those look almost supernatural!
... almost. :)
I got to see this happen in Texas, im more impressed we had ice at all than a sun halo
When I was a teen, (I'm 65), conditions were really great for halos around the sun one day. Dad saw three sets, and I saw seven concentric sets that were weaker the farther they got from the sun. Those farthest ones were really hard to see.
I'm curious. Has anyone else ever seen the end of a rainbow that moves beside you in a field as you drive? I saw this in the '70s, when I rode home with a friend from college. Sorry, no pot of gold to be seen.
When I was in high school, I was standing in a field with my back facing the sun, I was just looking at the sky minding my own business when it drizzled suddenly, thanks to that though, I was able to realize that rainbows aren't really rain'bows', rather they're really rain'rings'.
Hank Green brought me here, and I'm not disappointed!
I enjoy these videos
Are you saying my head will explode if I look at the sun? Haha! This was a brilliant video and very fascinating, thanks!!
Prisms are so cool!
A saw a moon halo on Friday. I liked the larger moon that day. Make a video about this cool orbital effect!
Longer wavelengths are bend slightly more, not slightly less (2:29), that is why Red is on the outside of a rainbow. But with a sun dog the opposite happens, its on the inside as the sun is inside that arrangement, thus the opposite
Oh my god this is amazing I have to see these things in person
I've noticed that the colors in sundogs are a lot easier to see through polarized sunglasses.
best weather phemonena are the polar lights so beautiful
This episode was pretty dank. So many dank memes
Nature is amazing, science is amazing!
The Bob Ross mention made this video even cooler.
Extra points for the cool Bob Ross joke 😂
That’s an awesome video, thank you 😊
0:19-0:33 Insert all the Rainbow Dash jokes.
1:44-1:49 And again.
0:19
I'll say ''halo'' to that sight
If you do look at the sun and see a rainbow, I guess you are a "Stargazer". (Rainbow band reference)
Great. That one season when I'm the most likely to see these is just when it's always too cloudy to see the damn sky...
Incredible☀️😃
1:50 The phrase you were looking for is "20% cooler"
Good timing explanation.. but at the beginning the crystals are small hexagonal rods .. so how do they arrange in the air to perform the circular halo?
The upside down rainbow is called a circumzenithal arc. The colors also appear in opposite order compared to a normal rainbow.
I gotta say not many logos catch my attention, but Squarespace has a pretty fucking cool logo.
Good vid more like this please!
i need to have sunglasses too and words that say "deal with it" when i say silly things.. :D
Very suns!
That made me giggle.
Dude, chill
Seen one while snowboarding, and I was like wooooooooooooow awesome.
Cool lesson.
So did I just miss you talking about the one that looked like a rainbow fire? I'm serious, because I just woke up and it's very possible I missed it.
Last school year, my class was outside and I noticed a rainbow around the sun! It was cool, so I told my friends. They looked at the sun to see but could only do so for a second or two before their eyes started to hurt and they looked away. They said they couldn't see it, and then I remembered: I have transition lenses in my glasses.
when you live in a place that never has ice crystals and such so i’ve never seen these things 😂
I'd like to see a video explaining how this phenomenon moves around the way it does. I looked up sundog on RUclips and found a video showing where parts of a cloud were very bright refracting or reflecting the sun and then the shape would change suddenly. Even something high up in the sky that--to see it from that distance, it must have been huge--would appear to move almost instantly. What is that?
Sky art!
Man, this video sure is COOL.
I'll go home now.
this is SO cool!! hope I see one irl u,u
Unfortunately I live in Brazil so ice is just a legend for us 😔
Insert obligatory comment about how this is related to chemicals being sprayed from planes instead of not pushing an agenda and just enjoying the show
That pun game was cool. Very puny!
I saw the circle around the moon at midnight on Christmas and I thought it was an alien😂
Junior3325 omg me too i was like 5 and i said "OMG ITS A SPACE-ALIENNNNNNN"
I love your puns
Where I live(Dubai) the temp goes up to 50°C so obviously you don't see ice here every year, but yet i still see this halo effect around the Sunday and moon quite often, so what's the explanation?
Sun*
+Muhammad Mirsab And I saw another mighty angel come down from Heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire...............Revelation 10:1
+Muhammad Mirsab The temp of 50c is only that temp on the ground, see what the temp is miles up, much much lower.
+rdizzy1 you have a point but with such high temp on the ground even a mile high wouldn't be freezing cold right.
Muhammad Mirsab
Nope, every and any location on earth has ice crystals floating above if you go high enough. The temperature in the atmosphere on average goes down by 6.4 degrees C per KM you go up. The lowest part of the atmosphere ends at 16km up. Even half of that (8km) would be a drop of roughly 50C.
2:19 in the video is hilarious XD
