Randy tells it like it is!! Outstanding interview John!!🤘
American Woman and You Aint Seen Nothing Yet and so many more. Thanks for some great music Randy.
Always great guests and this one was great to see. BTO had some great songs ànd is a big part of rocks history.
I bought the single “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet” when it first came out in 1974. I was fourteen years old. Great rock song. I still have the same single record from all those years ago. It’s a bit scratchy but it plays great! Incidentally, I always preferred the B Side, “ Freewheelin”. That track just flows with a jazzy feel to it which was a new sound to a young Irish teenager. It caught my imagination and broadened my exposure to a whole other world of music. Up to that it had been confined to straight rock and pop tunes (Rolling Stones, Beatles, Thin Lizzy, Slade, The Sweet, The Faces etc). But from then on I went to discover Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes, Roxy Music, Pink Floyd, Rory Gallagher, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Harry Chapin etc etc etc and then later on Brand X, Weather Report, John Coltrane among many others. I haven’t looked back since! So, thank you to BTO for helping to open me up to lots of sounds other than regular pop/rock music (which there’s nothing wrong with of course!).
Same age as you and did the same thing!
Another outstanding interview, John. Keep your feet on the ground, but keep reaching for the stars. Your hard work is always going to be rewarded.
Saw them in concert and they sounded so much like th albums they were a good rock band
I saw BTO or some form of it in the mid 80’s. It was cool! I grew up listening to my dad play their 8 track tapes in the 70’s. Awesome!
Thanks for another great interview, John!
Yeah I saw them opening for Van Halen in 1986 I think. The first Van Hagar tour.
I technically got to see a BTO renunion back in 1991 in St. Louis. I was in one of the bands that played the radio station KSHE’s 25th birthday party at Riverport Amphitheater. Another band on the bill was the Guess Who, but it was mostly made up of guys from BTO. Sounded great, of course.
A 1991 lineup of the Guess Who that was "mostly made up of guys from BTO" can't be right. I am curious as to who you actually saw that night!
@@Robert_Lawson Around 1990-91 - Bachman Turner Overdrive did some touring with Randy, Fred Turner , Robbie and Blair. Which was the line up through almost all the albums. So you may have seen what most would attribute to the original line up. In 88-89 another bother Tim was out with a version of BTO as well.
@@Robert_Lawson admittedly, I wasn’t totally familiar with the complete lineup of the original Guess Who at the time. However, the stage director mentioned to me that other than Cummings, everyone else was from BTO. Definitely wasn’t Gary Peterson on drums.
I am hoping to see a Randy Burton reunion, I bought the tickets before Covid, its been rescheduled a million times, maybe this May.
I saw BTO in my hometown of Detroit.
The crowd went nuts.
It became a live album.
Good one! Loved BTO and the Guess Who back in the better days.
With Blair it would be cool
I believe there is a health reason Robin Bachman is unable to play drums now. Don't know about Tim Bachman or Blair Thornton. Fred is retired, and sadly, Jim Clench died.
Interview Blair, I’d like to hear his story!
I was listening to AM radio til BTO so it was all growth from then on.
I saw B.T.O. sometime in the mid to late 80s, in St. Louis- I think they were the warm-up band for Van Hagar, at the Checkerdome, or Blues arena, I forget what they were calling it then - anyway, the next day, the DJ on WMRY was calling them “bachman-turner overweight”…
Why isn't BTO in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
R.I.P. Robbie Bachman.
RIP Robbie. I wonder if there's a small chance of a reunion now that Robbie is gone? Can Randy have the name back??
History mission- first time power chords came into play- I nominate "Basin Street Blues" -snowed in? find an earlier example.
Good luck with that reunion idea, missing a couple of original band mates now.
let's hope
I bought ain't seen nothing yet back in 74,I was 20 years old. For some reason here in England they never seemed to get the success they deserved. I went on to buy 7 albums on vinyl and a box set on CD. In 2010 Bachmann and turner had an album out over here with some great tracks on. Can't go back to Mempis was a great track. I would love something new to come out but it's not looking great 😕
Unfortunately, with the death of Robbie Bachman and Fred Turner retired from touring, a reunion of the classic line-up of Bachman-Turner Overdrive is now out of the question. Randy and his son, Tal have been touring as Bachman & Bachman.
As long as they're all alive.
Great interview! I can see how he might have issues with Burton Cummings
At 4:15, does Randy say "the university of hard rock" (or "the university of hard luck")? Thanks.
I saw the original , I believe at The Fillmore East . Can Randy confirm if they played there ? I looked on an archive list and they weren't listed . In fact , The Fillmore closed on June 27 , 1971 . BTO formed in 1973 . I realize the air was a little " thick " back then . I could have the venues mixed up .
BTO was a truly great live band in their prime - but so was Randy Bachman's previous band, 'The Guess Who' - the band he quit just as they released their most famous album & song 'American Woman'. Here is a reunion of that band from some years back - with most of the original lineup - and Bachman showing off his guitar skills in a BIG way .. ruclips.net/video/C_fNGa26hig/видео.html
Regarding Randy's comment at 1:34, how did BTO going on without him basically spoil his career (mind you without Turner, unless I'm mistaken, it's not as though Randy could have used the name himself*)? Thanks. *maybe if Randy had the name Turner would have gone with him instead
Not sure how that could have ruined his career either.
He gave away the name BTO? OMG.
Any chance of a Guess Who reunion?
He'd have to try to keep Robbie clean unfortunately
I’ve read various things but never anything that spells it out. What’s the “health reasons” that he’s referring to?
Also did his little brother have drug problems?
Thanks
Holy crap. I've known these guys since 1973. None of them had drug problems. They're getting old, touring schedules are brutal and not very profitable at this stage of their careers and just maybe, they've had their day in the sun and anything else would fall short. Randy is the only one still working. He and his son Tal are close to putting out an album of new material but due to COVID it has been delayed.
Let's hope not...
Robbie and Blair sued Randy and Fred for calling themselves “Bachman and Turner.” That probably killed any chance for a full reunion. They lost of course, you can’t stop someone from using his real name.
Saw Bachman Turner Overweight back in 1975. Please no reunion, go retire & leave rockin n roll to the young folks.
Please, no.
