Rhett and Zach unpack the big news for secondhand guitar sellers and buyers: Sweetwater has launched their new Gear Exchange. How does it compare to Reverb, Craigslist, and Marketplace? To find out, Zach takes the site for a spin and buys a pedal. He calls the process both “very easy” and “normal.” They discuss the pros and cons of the various used-gear outlets and share tips for not getting got when buying gear. Plus, Zach grew a mustache, Mythos Pedals is moving, and he talks about his forthcoming line of Strat pickups inspired by Hendrix’s reverse-stagger setup.

Thank you for the kind words 🙏 I am really delighted you're into the pedal! It eats fidelity; so is pronounced Fideleater 😉
This was one of my favorite episodes so far for some reason. I think, my favorite part of this show is just watching you guys talk, I just want to buy you both a cup of coffee or a beer and listen to you guys hash something out. Cheers!
Lame.
Nah it’s the cool stache
So sweet that "Dipped In Tone" is on a more regular schedule. Gives me something to look forward to and keeps me from being bord. I need my gear fix otherwise I'm looking at guitar store web sites and kickin' 'round RUclips Channels that just don't have that "The Thing."
Thanks, feeling better now.
I really like the fact that Sweetwater's Gear Exchange does not allow companies to sell gear... it only allows individuals selling to other individuals.
I built the deluxe reverb kit from Stew-Mac and it’s awesome. I highly recommend it.
I will just say, Mick from That Pedal Show has a pretty killer 'stache going on right now. But Zach and him are a great combo to be the stache bros!
Loved playing that thing. I gravitated towards it over all the other ones in your old spot man. Those pickups sounded 👌🏼🔥
Love you guys! Really happy the show is being supported by premier guitar.
For reference though, a brownie
Ha! I have my grandma's Brownie camera from the 50's, as well as the 8mm projector. I love preserving the old stuff.
Maaaaaaan...
I'm so glad that by mistake...

Tank you for that man..
I use the bit commander, bit crushers rule. Love you guys, hope you’re well!!!
I’ll 3rd the Baseplate Mod for your Stratocaster. Just did this on mine, last week. For me, it made my Strat much more useable.
Sweet guitar man..love the clear back plate... unique offset and I love the inlays
The Frank Brothers guitar looks sick!
The baseplate is a must. My Fralin’s are the 5% overwound. They remind me of ‘65 or ‘66
My problem with the sweetwater gear exchange is the searchability. The search tools are far less robust than Reverb or Guitar Center and this issue will continue to hamper the usability of the Gear Exchange until it's fixed.
That too funny! I was going to break out the cop analogy, but thankfully you did it for me!
"shoyles" is the funniest fucking thing in music podcast world hands down LOL
I would listen to a Dipped in Tone special car themed episode or segment, here and there. Cars are dope af
When I heard about Sweetwater’s used thing, I went to the main site and saw nothing. I figured it hadn’t actually launched yet. I get preferring that people buy new, and maybe I overlooked something, but I didn’t know until listening to this today (11/11/22) that it’s a separate site.
I just cracked up at Rhett Skull rolling across the screen 😂
"You really don't need that many gain stages." (Laughs in 8 dirt pedals and a Deco with tape saturation)
“And that’s how math works”. I literally say that all the time in exactly the same context. Lol.
Pods in back to back weeks!?! Who are you and what have you done with Rhett and Zach?
Most people (like me) that grew up with vinyl records and film cameras were thrilled to leave them behind when something better came a long. It's interesting when new generations come along and discover them again. I'll stick with the HD music streaming and the digital cameras though. I've suffered enough already!
I'm with you! Thinking back to cassette players and even larger quadraphonic cartridges in cars chewing up tape and even just developing film from cameras ... I'm happy to stream and use digital cameras. Certainly with the cameras, the quality is far superior! And while I've purchased from Sweetwater, it's easier to use Reverb if you don't live in the USA.
I always start at Sweetwater. That is where I first shop for basically everything related to music. If it isn’t on Sweetwater I would check to see if there are any similar products that they sell. For example, I like Lewitt mics. Before the 1040, I wouldn’t buy them though because there are just too many similarly useful mics on Sweetwater. But then the 1040 came out and that is genuinely unique so I would have gone to buy it somewhere else but around that same time Lewitt got on to Sweetwater so it was a bit moot.
If it isn’t on Sweetwater, then I would go elsewhere. This is also largely due to the fact that I buy most things new. If I bought more used equipment I’d probably prioritize places like Reverb more.
There are also other, product specific sites that I tend to go to after a quick check to confirm Sweetwater doesn’t have it. For example, Sweetwater doesn’t really do much with modular synths. They have more than nothing. They have a lot of the bigger brands but they don’t sell a huge portion of what’s interesting.
For the Rhett Skull shirt, put Rhett’s head on the body of Red Skull from the Marvel movies and change his quote from Endgame to say “in order to take the Tone, you must lose that which you love.” And it could be like a gear swap shirt. One instrument on one hand, another in the other hand. 😂
I’ve got a Hasselblad. They are awesome.🔥
I bought my Mesa Tremoverb Dual Rectifier new in 95. It's been great. 2 channel, great hi gains or clean. Lindsey Buckingham uses the same amp for his clean tones ....
I listed two things on Sweetwater, got at least 25 scammers trying to pay me with 'cashiers checks' - 'ship to xxx country' - etc.. in the first week, I deleted the listings and have not gone back,. This was end of last year.
Zach should definitely consider following an acting career, he looks so much like police officers from Hollywood with that mustache!
Stewmac currently have a couple of mahogany tonewood sets for making an acoustic, priced at $5299.99 per set. Highest price I could find.
Nice!
Check out some of the guitar tool kits for high prices they get up into the thousands range.
Gear Exchange search results cough up a bunch of unrelated results vs. Reverb. Tried "Acoustic Lap Steel" looking for something in the Weissenborn camp. GE gives you a lot of decidedly un-lap steel items.
Ive been running mesa recently and while it can be a bit of a bear for those who aren't used to them, I have yet to get an amp that sounds as good. I run the mark v 25 tho so its light and sounds amazing XD
My Mark 25 combo is my most prized possession
Rhett! I've read that Leo Nocentelli of the Meters used a Lonestar. I have no idea if it was just live, or if he recorded with one. I would love to recreate his tone on 'the Look of Love'
"Railroad futures speculator" as Rhett's title this episode made me lol. Old Joe came out of the gate a little hot last episode, but we can forgive him.
If you consign at a reputable dealer, they often get higher prices for sales.
The price the dealer got for my ‘67 330 was probable a couple of grand or more than I could have got for it and that allowed me to get the ‘67 Riviera I always wanted
As an Australian, I really appreciated the dollarydoos reference
Love this episode. It was generally informative and helpful to those who might be interested in how to go about selling some of their gear. I agree with most of the points that the boys made, although one thing is a bit tough to look past. This is just my personal opinion, but for me, the consignment fees at brick and mortar shops are just too much. In Michigan it is almost always between 20 and 30 percent. For something like a high end American Strat that could be around $300-500! Reverb fees are around 8% when all is said and done if you're not paying extra to bump your listing, which I've never done and have sold quite a bit of gear on there without running into the issue of it sitting for too long. I can see where consigning at a shop could be advantageous as far as the convenience factor and sometimes might be worth forking over a bit more of your payout. However, if you're selling something like a $3,000 Custom Shop Strat or Tele I CAN'T see how you could stomach taking a $750 hit when you could easily save at least a few hundred bucks by selling it yourself.
Just to clarify, I only meant that the shop consignment fee is a bit high for me personally if I am looking to sell a fairly valuable piece of gear. I think that from a shop's perspective, 20-30 percent is not unreasonable and they couldn't realistically charge much less for this service to be worth their time.
look at the wall plug, that not in the states. Hard to find some amps outside the states
Does anyone know of a good source of durable cardboard shipping boxes for electric guitars? I know Reverb sells them but they aren't like the ones that come from the guitar builders.
I'm so happy to see Zach finally rocking the stache.
Like the pups, when can we pre-order or become beta testers?
Zach needs to get Crown Vic to complete the undercover cop look
I think you dunked this rig instead of dipping the rig. Only thing wrong was he had too much gear yet really took a beating for it. I think this rig was better than rated, but it is your show and you do the dipping so it is what it is. I do agree that I love the guitar selection. Just my 2 cents worth.
Holy crap Zach... Timmons! whoa...
Got 'em!
@@DippedInTone happy for you both. You both seem like good guys.
I sent Zach a photo of inflatable Christmas yard decor on his birthday because I'm a guy who pays attention to what people like (and dislike)!
On Reverb is happening what happened to Ebay.
Started for used gear and stuff and got overrun by dealers...
Here in Europe we don't have Sweetwater (we have Thomann) and I think Reverb has a huge advantage in that respect. I recall Behringer tried to rival Reverb some years ago with Music Tribe and I think it's fair to say it was a failure - I just checked how many Fender guitars they had listed. 5 Guitars on the entire site.
I love fano offsets but they always have ugly stop tail bridges and not amazing offset vibratos.. a mastery on that Fano would be so amazing
Just buy guitars the color of wife’s favorite fingernail polish!
Zac, it’s Sam Elliott and then you! Just give it a year
Addison from JHS has a great mustache
I never understood why u would need more than one delay
Mustache is killa!
54:18 Rhett if this bothers you check out the Guild S-100 :)
Sweetwater sends a bag of candy with your purchase. Now that Etsy owns Reverb, will they be sending scented candles or doilies with your purchases?
Had many years of pleasant selling & buying on Reverb - No More. Not to mention no customer service anymore & hiding behind the Internet.
Several years back Craigslist turned into: 2 mins after you put up in an ad you get overpriced offers to buy on behalf of "my good friend - a Nigerian/Egyptian/Haitian/etc etc prince who can't buy himself so I am offering more for your trouble".
I'm going to look into Sweetwater's market after many year of being a customer. Or maybe try the local little shop and do consignment (where i have several times in the past).
I dig the stache too! Hope it’s not gone yet. Great topic guys. 👏
"Mountains..." 😂 You call them hills near the east coast "mountains"? I know you've been to Colorado, so, umm, yeah, MOUNTAINS! 😂😂😂
The Franks Brothers guitar looks like Plankton from SpongeBob Square Pants.
I agree it should be s/s/h
Rhett Skull shirt for sure! and for consignments, in the Charlotte NC area, is 15%. Something to keep in mind when comparing to selling on Reverb.
Love your discussion. Ebay is still revelant. Selling with Ebay or reverb is great until you get a fraudulent buyer. Lets say,and its happened more than once, I sell a peddle to u, you have a broken one of the same one. You say mine doesn't work and you send me the broken one back. Serial number or not Ebay and reverb are probably going to stand behind the buyer (9 times out of 10) Add up your time dealing with this transaction compared to a Craigslist deal. Fortunately most deals go well if you dealing with someone that 100% feedback so it makes it easy. But I've had a few nightmares. I would like to have a few tips to help to sell a guitar safely on Reverb or Ebay.
new okilly dokilly member?
Guns are way more fun to shoot than cameras. I would recommend it.
Rhett black lights his sg later only to find its three guitars 😂
If you don't own files, you probably have guitars with fret spout
Shit, Ron Swanson on dipped in tone
Did you hear Gene Simmons has a Gibson signature bass?
Platinum and gold records when you needed millions of sales; selling out stadiums and arenas around the world for nearly 50 years.
Well deserved.
😁
Fideleater- Fidel - as in Fidelity. Eater. As in it eats your sound and Fs it up.
Hi dilly ho, neighborinos!! Nice stache!
It is a bit Flanders now you mention it!
@@danielhoskins4690 in the best way possible.
How about a wordz is hard stinger
The chemicals used for developing photos can be nasty, careful
Yeah GBP is in the toilet. Buy it! Sound GAS is local to me in Derbyshire in the UK. They’re very highly recommended and know how to service old gear properly. They always have old Space Echos and synths
Rhett, you really need files. You Just never know
*air quotes* "supposedly"
Reverb 100% as sweetwater has gotten really bad about letting ya think you'll be getting your order then you find out it's on pre order?
Never used reverb for new gear.. only used.
Reverb was started to be sold. The fees were too low from a business perspective. It was all to gain market share. Compared to other marketplaces, the fees are low.
Harry Reemsish.
Ned Flanders
HI DIDDILY HO!
Reverb has an easier to use interface and the customer service (especially for Reverb protection payouts) is amazing. The only way Sweetwater can take over is if they drop they’re fees.
Seriously consider getting an editor. lol
Rhett has decided to become one of those annoying “it’s been a minute” guys
At least he only says it every 10 sentences
Less camera, mustache, camping and other irrelevant, time-wasting, inane small talk......and more guitar stuff....
Mesas are made in America
So are benson
So are twinkies
@@danielhoskins4690 sweet!
Out of the four, Guitar Center, Reverb, Sweetwater, Craigslist. I like Craigslist the best, Then GC.
CL does have the most hackiest salespeople to ever live(ever), but You can get really good deals from non collector scum. The most important thing for me tho is I need to hold/feel/hear/play the instrument/amp/pedal before purchase. I've walked away from many a purchase on CL, probably 60-70% of the time. Pretty similar reason for GC, and I've gotten better deals on used gear there then what I saw people selling the same thing on CL for, plus you get 45 days to return it. Can't fail. I don't trust making a purchase on Reverb from say a seller in Paris. I know they say there is buyer protection plans , but if you get ganked it seems like it would take a fair amount of time to return, get your money back etc, plus there's foreign exchange rates, shipping costs and added fee's (ughhh, too Much).
